In Spanish, the word "inolvidable" means "unforgettable." A title as lofty as Inolvidable would, in many cases, be an example of excessive hype, but when the artists in question are percussionist Candido Camero and singer Graciela Perez, the word "unforgettable" is definitely appropriate -- their contributions to Afro-Cuban jazz music are exactly that. Camero and Perez go back a long way; they first met in the '40s, when Perez was a featured vocalist for Machito's band (a gig that lasted into the '70s). Perez retired from performing in 1993, but Camero managed to lure her back into the studio for this 2004 release. Both of them were octogenarians when Inolvidable came out; Camero was 82, while Perez was 88. Produced by Nelson Gonzalez and David Chesky (with Charles Carlini serving as associate producer), Inolvidable finds Camero and Perez turning their attention to classic Latin gems like "Cesar Portillo de la Luz," "Tu Mi Delirio" and Rafael Hernandez' "Desvelo" -- and the octogenarians happily recreate the spirit of jazz-influenced Afro-Cuban dance music as it sounded in the '40s and '50s (but with the digital technology of the 21st century). Despite Perez' physical limitations -- she has been plagued by debilitating arthritis -- the veteran singer brings a great deal of enthusiasm to this project. And for 88, Perez still sounds surprisingly good; she doesn't have the vocal stamina of her youth, but she gets her points across nonetheless -- and being reunited with Camero seems to really inspire her on the album's up-tempo selections as well as romantic boleros such as Hernandez' "Amor Ciego," and Arsenio Rodriguez' "La Vida Es Un Sueńo." For Afro-Cuban enthusiasts, a Camero/Perez reunion is truly an historic event -- one that yields consistently enjoyable results on Inolvidable. ~ Alex Henderson
INOLVIDABLE is a collaboration between two old friends, who just happen to be legendary figures in Afro-Cuban jazz. The project was spearheaded by conguero Candido Camero, who lured vocalist Graciela out of retirement for the session. One of the essential artists of the genre, Graciela was the lead vocalist for Machito and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra for the duration of the group's greatest popularity (from the 1940s to the '70s). Candido's alternately subtle and raucous rhythms on his triple congas have defined numerous bands, and here he leads a crack ensemble of piano, violin, bass, flute, tres, and additional percussionists and backing vocalists.
Though both artists were in their 80s at the time of recording, this set of classic Cubop is imbued with a sense of youthful vitality and ease, with percolating polyrhythms intersecting jazzy instrumental passages. Though Graciela's pipes have weathered considerably, she still sings with the assurance of a master, and sounds especially fine on slower tunes, particularly the ballroom takes on Rafael Hernandez's "Amor Ciego" and Arsenio Rodriguez's "La Vida Es Un Sueno." In fact, save a few numbers (the sprightly "Chachita"), the set is relaxed and lushly romantic throughout, making for a sweet and charming listen.

Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels
Thin Lizzy Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels CDs  (2002) (Import) Box Set; Germany

CD $72.29  4 stars
Thin Lizzy was a great band and Phil Lynott, the songwriter behind it, was a kind of visionary, pioneering a poetic, working-class aesthetic later echoed in his American counterpart, Bruce Springsteen, while also leading the group's various lineups through a staggering number of great guitarists, highlighted by the triple-attack of the Jailbreak era. That said, they're the kind of great band that, unless you're dedicated, is perhaps better heard in isolated bursts, such as the classic Jailbreak or the peerless compilation Dedication, which successfully summarizes the band in 70 minutes. Often, their albums fluctuated between greatness and puzzling idiosyncratic detours -- the kind of thing you cherish once you're a fan, but the kind of thing that prevents many from converting in the first place. Which is why Dedication is such a welcome entry in their catalog, but for those who want more, without getting actual albums, the 2001 four-disc box set Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels is a good bet, since it does whittle down a fairly extensive discography into a fairly lean, yet generous 73 tracks. Apart from some album tracks from Jailbreak and Bad Reputation, there really aren't any truly great songs that didn't make it on Dedication, so this box will not provide revelations -- just other well-written, well-performed, eloquent hard rock, graced by Lynott's wonderfully unpredictable phrasing and consistently superb guitars. For collectors, there's a handful of rare tracks, usually from EPs and B-sides (the best of which is 1973 B-side "Cruising in the Lizzymobile," which is easily one of the greatest titles in rock), plus the requisite history and photographs. It does add up to a thorough, entertaining, and valuable history -- but probably ...
Petty Lies & Lullabies
Primary Lines Petty Lies & Lullabies CD  (2006)

Inolvidable
CD $9.35
The Primary Lines, better known as "TPL", took form when Rich (guitar) and Becker (drums) decided to leave the band "Static View". Together Rich and Becker left with a common goal, primarily focused on achieving "success" and "respect" from the punk rock scene. Shortly after departure, the duo enlisted bassist Slayden, which enabled them to explore and dabble with more complicated arrangements. The three began to experiment with different sounds, thus developing and diversifying their musical presence and abilities. Some months later, the group again felt it was necessary, in order to expand, facilitate and sustain their collective rapid and creative growth, by adding a lead singer. This endeavor would pose a challenge, as the band at this moment in time, was located in a small town in Indiana where the talent pool reflected the demographic. Utilizing the internet and searching local music posts, they stumbled across a singer (Schwan) whose add had received little attention from noteworthy acts in the months prior. They called him and scheduled an audition of sorts, with the end result of adding Schwan to the mix. The Fallout Effect, as known at the time, recorded a demo and began searching for a replication source. The search produced a band favorite, “Glass Manacle Records.” TFOE sent the site an email requesting information about prices and the owner of the company, Steven Scott Everhart responded with a phone call offering them a record deal. He only heard the introduction to the band’s demo song “Mafia” and wanted to begin work immediately on a full length release. The next day the band traveled to Toledo, OH for a meeting with Steven, Glass Manacle’s president ...
