| | Trick Pony R.I.D.E. CD (2005)
All American Country
$7.29 R.I.D.E., the title of Trick Pony's third album, stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment." Of course, in 2000's Nashville, rebelling could often mean playing straight-up old-school country while not taking oneself too seriously, two pursuits at which Trick Pony excels. A slice of good-time barroom country rock, R.I.D.E. manages to sound staunchly traditional while never sticking too close to a formula. Primary lead vocalist Heidi Newfield comes off like a bawdy mix of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Mae West, delivering the pure honky-tonk of "Ain't ...

| | Lee Ann Womack Call Me Crazy CD (2008) Digipak
All American Country
$11.05 After flirting with the pop mainstream with hit singles like "I Hope You Dance," Lee Ann Womack came decidedly back to country with 2005's THERE'S MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM, an unapologetic stylistic throwback to the days when Patsy Cline and Kitty Wells ruled the country charts. While CALL ME CRAZY is nearly as traditionalist in its sound, and every bit as strong as a set of songs, it sounds perhaps a little more contemporary--more Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton than Patsy and Kitty--and includes highlights like first single ...
| | Ty Herndon Right About Now CD (2007)
All American Country
$14.59 Country singer Ty Herndon is back in the studio after a six-year break. Yeah, there was a Christmas record a couple of years back, but this is the first time the Meridian, Mississippi wonder has done an honest to goodness modern country record in nearly seven years. Herndon hit the charts and the road in a fury during the mid-'90s, and his demons hit back hard. Right: Herndon had a hellhound on his trail. Right About Now is one of those records that a man makes when he feels he has everything to prove. On the Jackson/Titan independent label (which is distributed by Fontana), Herndon lays out 11 new songs with help from songwriters like producer Darrell Brown, Keith Urban, Jess Cates, Beth Nielsen Chapman and others. The opener, written by Brown, Radney Foster, and Urban is a downtempo modern country rocker turned personal anthem. Herndon's voice is not only unchanged from his missing years, it's stronger, his phrasing is tighter and more expressive, and his manner of handling a song is entirely his own. "You Still Own Me" opens with a fiddle and a banjo and a shuffling snare. It's modern country at its best. This is one of those tracks that if the radio programmers have guts and his ...

| | yukmouth In Thugz We Trust (Slow) CD (2004) Chop
All American Country
$13.89 This is an example of the Southern Rap "screwed & chopped" mix style.
Because of Yukmouth's label problems, it looked like his team-up with C-Bo would never see the light of day. Good thing it all worked out, since Thug Lordz is a great forum for these dark West Coasters. Don't expect a revelation. C-Bo and especially Yukmouth are still stuck on the same gangsta leans, spinning wheels, and every other tired topic that these thugs have beat to death. What separates In Thugz We Trust is that these boys are bouncing off each other here with a new quickness that's the way West Coast addicts always imagined. So much of the same-old posturing allows guests like Spice 1 and the great Killa Tay to really steal the show, but it's been years since Yukmouth or C-Bo have seen a track as live as "Killa Cali," and it turns their thugging from standard issue to compelling and urgent. They haven't seen production this inspired in a while either, although the varied tunes and moods suggest it's more C-Bo's influence than Yuk's. Not much here for backpackers or glittery R&B lovers, but the West Coast faithful get an album they can bump the whole way through. Having waded through tons of full-lengths for their one or two phat tracks, they deserve this. ~ David Jeffries

| | Jae Skrilla Double Standard CD (2008)
All American Country
$6.69 This is the first release from Jae Skrilla who brings an east coast style that's inspired by artists such as Big L and Dilated Peoples, and lays them down skillfully on some very west coast inspired beats. With a wide variety of tracks on this 6-song EP the listener gets a taste of very different aspects of Jae Skrilla's life. "Wild in tha Club" starts out the EP with a psychedelic, up-tempo club beat with a chopped and screwed hook that adds a touch of southern style. Featured artists Black Dimonz and One Deuce, hailing from Texas, further add to the southern flavor. The next track "In The City" is a slower, more underground style raw street track featuring King Smooth Ace from Seattle that’s perfect for bumping while riding through the streets of your city. "My Life" is a very east coast sounding ...
