Thanks to a number of releases on Philo (starting in the 1990s), Ellis Paul has earned a rep for his literate songs and distinctive high-end vocals. On American Jukebox Fables Paul brings these gifts to bear on the American landscape in the post-millennium, post-9/11 world. Perhaps the first thing one will notice is the big production, one that includes everything from acoustic and electric guitars to bass, drums, mandolins, and background vocals. It isn't so much the eclectic nature of these instruments that calls attention to the production, though, but the fact, in busier passages, that the instruments are all overlapping one another. While these arrangements don't overpower Paul's vocals on songs like "Blacktop Train" or "Kiss the Sun," they do add a busier, more bombastic dimension to them. The material -- as the title suggests -- has a strong Americana element throughout, with references to everyone from Johnny Cash to Charlie Chaplin to Hank Williams. In "Kiss the Sun," for instance, Paul mixes Middle American images -- Kansas wheat fields -- with images of war, but adds to the usual liberal message by praising figures as disparate as Martin Luther King and Lenny Bruce. One begins to gather with "Jukebox on My Grave" that Paul is building a portrait of his own America, an America with a legacy of violence and great music. While the production sometimes overwhelms the lyrical underpinning, fans will find American Jukebox Fables a fine entry in Paul's catalog. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

American Jukebox Fables CD music
$13.59 Vern Williams and Ray Park were in the vanguard of the newly emerging bluegrass scene in the '60s, and although they were well respected within the bluegrass community, they were little known outside of it. They recorded a highly coveted four-song EP for Starday Records in 1962, as well as a scattering of other tracks that were later collected on the LP Sounds of the Ozarks, but the duo's studio output was minimal, which is part of what makes this pleasant live set from 1968 such a delight. Vern & Ray with Herb Pedersen: San Francisco 1968, recorded at San Francisco State College as part of the annual San Francisco Folk Festival, includes a young Herb Pedersen (banjo) and Howard Courtney (acoustic bass) joining Williams ...

American Jukebox Fables songs
$7.99 Spinner (1998) remains The Whole Bolivian Army's most passionate album to date: raw, minimalist, straight up indie rock. It was the band's first with bass player Jay Perry, who steered the band toward an unabashedly passionate sound."Spinner strikes a wonderful, all-too rare chord. It's a loud, passionate, proud work, self-aware where so many records are self-absorbed, bold where so many records are irritatingly forceful. In the early 1980s, it was acceptable for rock music to cover huge emotional and idealistic expanses. Acts like Big Country, Simple Minds, and most successfully U2 expressed a romantic vision of the world. Morals shaped a desire to experience life to the fullest. In recent years, a skewed sense of humility and an inherent cynicism about the future has shrunk many artists' dreams. T.W.B.A. shines because its songs reflect an adventurous spirit. Album producer Scott Ross makes the whole project crystal clear, guitars, vocals and drums ringing loud and proud. Dynamite stuff."-- Claude Flowers, Eastside Journal, May ...
