| | Edan Beauty And The Beat CD Edan Discography of CDs
(6 Customer Reviews)
Boston's Edan has scored the hip-hop triple crown, rapping, programming and sampling at a masters level on his second full-length. As an MC, he bows down while hyping himself up on the wink-nudge titled "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme," giving extended shout-outs to the history of hip-hop, from Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash through to Ultramagnetic MC's and Prince Po, all over a break as dusty and faded as an episode of Carnivale. "Polite Meeting" offers a beat and sample collage on par with the current work of DJ Shadow and RJD2, and one is left to really ponder at the possibility of Edan trying to perform the beats and vocals live. Def Jux bright star Mr. Lif makes a guest appearance on the heavily psychedelic "Making Planets," which leads into a full-on Hendrix-inspired freaky-blues interlude. Percee P and Insight also drop by to flow over some of Edan's time and space warping musical beds (to call these "beats" would be an immense oversimplification) but Dagha guests on the grittiest rocker, "Rock'N'Roll" which manages a full-on Marshall stack set to ten, and a guitar assault that somehow avoids all of the failings of rap-rock. If hip-hop had existed in the days of the Filmore, Woodstock and the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Edan would have been right on the bus. ~ Joshua Glazer
While Edan's critically acclaimed debut, 'Primitive Plus', was a celebration of Hip-hop's golden age and a true throwback, his sophomore album, 'Beauty And The Beat', is a vast musical collage that includes many different influences; Hip-hop, rock, pop, dusty breaks, hazy loops, luxurious off-kilter samples and curveball tempo changes that are all crafted into one cohesive piece of art. Edan's vast lyrical imagination and technical wizardry (he also self-produced every track) alone make 'Beauty And The Beat' a standout. The album's lead-single 'Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme', a track which true Hip-hop enthusiasts and historians will not only appreciate, but ultimately debate is a perfect sample of what 'Beauty And The Beat' has to offer.

| | One Be Lo S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. CD (2005)
Beauty And The Beat
$11.95 Keeping tabs on the actions of Ypsilanti, MI-based MC One Be Lo hasn't been a snap. Known previously as OneManArmy, he was part of Binary Star, a group responsible for 1999's Waterworld. An excellent underground rap album, it was hard find outside the Detroit area, until it was overhauled, retitled as Masters of the Universe, and re-released with national distribution. Binary Star then split. The former Raland Scruggs, who took the name Nashid Sulaiman after converting to Islam, switched his stage name from OneManArmy to One Be Lo for a 2002 solo album that didn't do his skills justice. Three years later, he resurfaced with S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M., his first release to be issued with major-label backing. He has a three-album deal, but you're left to believe after one play-through of this disc that he's ...
| | J Dilla Donuts CD (2006)
Beauty And The Beat
$12.75 Donuts was made on a hospital bed and in a home studio, on a stripped-down setup with a stack of vinyl. Released on its maker's 32nd birthday, three days before he passed away, the album has a resonance deeper than anyone could've hoped for or even imagined. Some who were close to Dilla have said that there are hidden messages in the samples, the track titles, and who knows where else. It's impossible ...

Beauty And The Beat
$16.95 Is Funk Soul Sisters "classic and rare female funk," as the blurb on the back promises? It's rare, beyond a doubt. None of these 20 tracks were anything resembling hits, and only a few names here and there will ring bells with those outside of inner soul collecting circles, those including Fontella Bass, Loleatta Holloway, and Millie Jackson. Is it classic? No, although it's respectable woman-sung soul-funk from the late '60s and early '70s, mostly from small labels. The vocals are stirring and the arrangements tight, yet as often happens on anthologies of these sorts, truly compelling riffs and top-of-the-shelf songs aren't in abundance. It's obvious, too, that some of these performances were extremely influenced by bigger names such as Aretha Franklin, without matching the inspiration. It's agreeable stuff in spite of all that, though perhaps below the standard of most other volumes in BGP's oft-excellent series of rare soul-funk ...
