Prior to Corrosion of Conformity's 2005 release, In the Arms of God, many fans wondered if the group was over. After all, it had been a long time since the band had issued a studio set (2000's America's Volume Dealer). During this extended break, singer/guitarist Pepper Keenan did double duty in Down (2002's Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow), and of course, had a much publicized tryout for the vacated bass position in Metallica (as seen in the indulgent Some Kind of Monster docu-film). But now COC is ready to roar once more, and the group does so on their eighth studio album overall. Joining Keenan once more are other mainstays Woody Weatherman (guitar) and Mike Dean (bass), as well as a big surprise on drums -- Galactic timekeeper Stanton Moore. To prime themselves for the sessions, the group immersed themselves in old hardcore and metal albums they hadn't listened to in years, and the approach worked, as In the Arms of God is a straight-ahead and raw set. The beginning of the album opener "Stone Breakers" closely resembles a Tony Iommi-led Sabbath jam, while such other ragers as "Paranoid Opioid" and "Never Turns to More" are classic COC. Fans who may have found 2004's AMERICA'S VOLUME DEALER a bit sterile will find IN THE ARMS OF GOD to be murkier than a bayou full of alligators. Corrosion of Conformity produced an album charged with more anger and aggression than anything the North Carolina band had done in the last 15 years. While not a total return to their 1980s political hardcore days, here C.O.C. brings back everything but the breakneck tempos.
From the overture-like quality of "Stone Breaker" to the cataclysmic conclusion of the title track, IN THE ARMS OF GOD plays like a movie score. Songs ebb and flow, yet remain connected by Stanton Moore's roiling drumming, propelling the group through a swampy landscape of Southern metal. "Rise River Rise" takes its sweet time; guitars and drums tinker, while the bass rumbles along, and once everything is in place, there's a brief pause before the band roars to life. This tension and release is used again with even more success on the eerily calm "Crown of Thorns" transition into the self-titled tour de force album closer. Throughout the record, frontman Pepper Keenan's voice reveals a singer who just gets better with age, and his primal screams bring added urgency to this fiercely potent outing. COC deliver another solid album of Southern style rawness. Rise River Rise is the key track here with it's acoustic layering and Keenans soulful vocals. All in all every song will get ya where it counts. Can't wait for a new album or tour date in my area.

 This album will break the stones
Amazing, brutal, full of energy. I didn't expect such an incredible album from C.O.C.; I was so mistaken. I can't stop hearing "In the arms of God" these days, though I try to hear other bands' cd's I got.

Sabbath meets Trouble once again!
After the excellent "Blind" album, COC
began a metamorphasis into what I can only describe as southern fried Metallica; kind of like ZZ Top, Lynard Skynard and Hetfield's "Black" album all rolled into one. All releases have been more than decent but I must say, I am most pleased to hear the VOLS turned way up and those Sabbath & Trouble roots once again spreading out like hell-fueled tentacles ominously sprouting into organic monolithic monsters. This is HEAVY metal once again; thick, doomy and delivered with the class we all have come to know & expect from Corrosion. Crash, bang & whallop at will y'all; this is the perfect soundtrack to a good 'ole down home riff pummeling.

This Cd is awesome I love the songs beginning to end guitars cut through your ears and the drums melt you with sweet beats and rhythms and the vocals don't get me started on that but I have to spill it they are cool as ice I love the lead singers screams and how well he every lyric now my most favorite song of this record is Dirty Hands and Empty Pockets the background vocals and front are awesome it than goes from a creepy song to a Van Halen type section part all the way to the end but away from that I love this album 2 thumbs up!! Oh the Crown of Thorns song is a creepy song very weird how everything goes but aside from that buy this album and be amazed!!

Hands down best album I've heard in years, I'd say since Down's NOLA album in the nineties. Pepper's voice is easily the best in metal, and Woody's solos are solid throughout the entire album. Woody plays his solos with soul, not just to see how fast he play. I got this album a year ago, and I still cannot take it out of my cd player. Simply amazing.
