Midnight Soul
$11.89 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled & mixed by Bruno Ybarra & DJ Mauricio Aviles. Though the second Nude Dimensions volume doesn't depart too far from the first volume, neither in terms of track selection nor mixing, this mix by Mauricio Aviles is nonetheless nothing short of wonderful; a welcome addition to the series that should delight anyone who has enjoyed any of the other Nude Dimensions volumes. Much like the other volumes, this mix begins with a few great vocal tracks -- Bougie Soliterre's "Superficial," the Petalpusher vocal mix of Blue Six's "Pure," the dub mix of Undercover Agency's "I Need You in My Life," and the Petalpusher dub mix of Aquanote's "True Love" -- before heading into more ...

| | T Rex Tanx: Expanded And Remastered CDs (1973) Remastered; Reissued
Midnight Soul
$22.25 The 1997 reissue of TANX features 7 additional tracks that did not appear on the original release; "Children Of The Revolution," "Jitterbug Love," "Sunken Rays," "Solid Gold Easy Action," "Xmas Message," "20th Century Boy" and "Free Angel." T. Rex includes: Mark Bolan (vocals); Steve Currie (bass); Bill Legend (drums). Includes liner notes by Mark Paytress. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This two-disc 2002 edition is packaged in a digipak and plastic slipcase. Disc one includes seven non-album single sides in addition to the original album. Disc two includes 23 "work in progress" versions and demos, which mirror the original album's running order. Includes a 16 page color booklet featuring lyrics, photos, and memorabilia. Includes liner notes by Mark Paytress (Marc Bolan's biographer). T. Rex: Marc Bolan (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Mickey Finn (vocals, congas, percussion); Steve Currie (bass guitar); Bill Legend (drums). Additional personnel: Howard Casey (saxophone); Tony Visconti (Mellotron, background vocals). By 1973's Tanx, the T. Rex hit-making machine was beginning to show some wear and tear, but Marc Bolan still had more than a few winners up his sleeve. It was also admirable that Bolan was attempting to broaden the T. Rex sound -- soulful backup singers and horns are heard throughout, a full two years before David Bowie used the same formula for his mega-seller Young Americans. However, Tanx did not contain any instantly recognizable hits, as their past couple of releases had, and the performances were not quite as vibrant, due to non-stop touring and drug use. Despite an era of transition looming on the horizon for the band, tracks such as "Rapids," "Highway Knees," "The Street & Babe Shadow," and "Born to Boogie" contain the expected classic T. Rex sound. The leadoff track, "Tenement Lady," is an interesting Beatlesque epic, while "Shock Rock" criticizes the early-'70s glam scene, which T. Rex played a prominent role in creating. Other highlights include one of Bolan's most gorgeous and heartfelt ballads, "Broken Hearted Blues," as well as the brief, explosive rocker "Country Honey." Tanx marked the close of what many consider T. Rex's golden era; unfortunately, the bandmembers would drift off one by one soon after, until Bolan was the only one remaining by the mid-'70s. ~ Greg Prato There were more successful T. Rex albums, notably THE SLIDER, but without any hit singles, this collection seems to win favour as the most cohesive and interesting. The reissued CD has the generous bonus of seven tracks, including ...

| | Aterciopelados Oye CD (2006) Digipak
Midnight Soul
$11.65 Oye arrived a full five years after Aterciopelados' previous studio release, and a lot happened in that time. For starters both singer Andrea Echeverri and bassist Héctor Buitrago -- the Colombian band's most potent creative forces -- released well-received solo albums that, rather than serve to push them further out of the band framework, seem to have strengthened their resolve to coalesce as a tighter, more focused unit. The last Aterciopelados record, Gozo Poderoso, though nominated for a Grammy, was something of a wandering affair, the band shoving aside its rock roots and aligning with the growing trend toward electronica and pounding dancefloor rhythms. They've clearly chosen to return to what they do best on Oye, and it was a smart move: the melodies have never been stronger, the playing has never been more in sync (using a live drummer certainly helps inspire them to perform more like a band), the songs never catchier. ...

| | Black Lips Los Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo CD (2007)
Midnight Soul
$10.15 Composer: Black Lips. Audio Mixer: John Reis. Photographer: Dan Monick. The Atlanta-based garage-punk combo the Black Lips released their first album for Vice records in 2007, the live instant-party LOS VALIENTES DEL MUNDO NUEVO. Recorded in Tijuana, Mexico, the band's lo-fi aesthetic is perfectly suited to the dingy club setting and that much more so to TJ given the Lips' reputation for on-stage debauchery. Live albums aren't always the best place to discover a band, but with its sweaty enthusiasm and near-perfect, in-the-now sound recreation LOS VALIENTES may prove the exception to the rule. One of the members of the Black Lips enthusiastically announces, "This is going to be the best live record of all time!" before the band launches into "Not a Problem" on Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo, and from a conceptual standpoint this disc would seem to have real possibilities. For this live set (if the liner notes are to be believed), the Black Lips opted to record a gig in one of the world's great centers of debauchery -- Tijuana, Mexico -- and hired a mariachi band to open the show. A drunken and audibly enthusiastic audience packed the joint, hookers performed lewd acts while the band wailed on-stage, and a splendid time was had by all capable of remembering the evening. While the performances on Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo (or, "The Brave Ones of the New World") sometimes sound suspiciously coherent for a real live recording (especially given the frantic circumstances ...
