Following in the folk-pop path carved out on her 2003 release Distant Shore, ex-Solas vocalist Karan Casey trades in her covers- and traditionals-heavy repertoire for a collection that relies on mostly self-penned material. Chasing the Sun eschews -- for the most part -- the Celtic side of Casey for a more contemporary folk style that suits the Irish siren's gorgeous voice. With minimal but effective accompaniment she waxes on about everything from drink to politics with the breezy but cautious air of a songbird that has seen as much sorrow as it has beauty. Lovely a cappella pieces like "Jimmy Whelan" and "Brown and Yellow Ale" hark back to the singer's Solas days, showcasing the flawless intonation and smooth delivery that have made her one of the genre's most consistently gratifying singer, but this ballad-heavy collection often lulls the listener away from the song itself, leaving them delightfully melancholy but ultimately detached. ~ James Christopher Monger

Having established herself as a marvelous traditional Irish singer, Karan Casey's decided to spread her wings and head into contemporary folk-pop. It's a good decision, as she proves to be just as adept and intimate a performer on modern material as the old songs. She's also an astute judge of songwriters, whether it's Billy Bragg's title track, a meditation on emigration, Tim O'Brien's "Another Day," or Ger Wolfe's excellent "The Curra Road." She keeps the feel loose throughout, almost like a session, but keeps herself front and center, never letting things stray too much out of focus. Her own singing is as understated as ever, letting less be a little more, giving a wonderful shine to something like "Distant Shore." There's also a very political element to her music, as she illustrates on "The Jute Mill Song" and her version of Ewan MacColl's "The Ballad of Tim Evans," an eloquent argument against the death penalty. In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle.
