Finally, the reissue of this the last Gene Krupa big band date. The sound is wonderful, the arrangements are well.. Mulligan. Phil Woods soloing is a joy. While technically, this is a pick up band of the best that New York section players. The appeal is the same as the great vintage Krupa bands. Clean section work, well rehearsed, swinging solos and overall very pleasant. The remastering is truly wonderful. The rhythm guitar of Barry Galbraith is like a rock that I don't remembering hearing on my old lp. The inner voices of the Mulligan arrangements are a wonderful nuances that come out loud and clear on this disc. I was a little disappointed that there were no extra tracks hidden in the can someplace that could have added to the cd issue. But, I am more than pleased to have this one back.

||great mulligan arrangments|
As a player, he was a one off great, listen to some of his great arrangments with the pulse that only Krupa had, a must have for the Krupa and Mulligan army of fans, if you dont have them.

||A lot of fun.|
It's nice to hear these old Gerry Mulligan charts as rearranged by Gerry. The studio band cooks all the way.

||Good studio album|
I always dug Gene's recordings of Mulligan's arrangements, even as a teenager in the 1960s, when Columbia put them out on vinyl. Yeah, you can hear a lot more here than on the originals, but the excitement really isn't there even if the overall musicianship is better--how could it not be? Check out the personnel. But listening to Fagerquist or Red Rodney soloing over what were new changes for the first time--even as Gene was lost in swing time, well, you take your choice. Gene is far less intrusive and a little more genre-appropriate here. Phil Woods is a marvel. Still is. But Charlie Kennedy playing lead alto on the originals is something to hear to.
