Personnel: Buddy Rich (drums); Sam Most (flute); Rolf Ericson (trumpet); Johnny Morris (piano); Mike Mainieri (vibraphone); Wyatt Ruther (bass instrument). This crack sextet recording by Buddy Rich is one of the long lost treasures in his vast discography as a leader, featuring a band he took on a State Department-sponsored tour of the Far East and Asia not long after the recording sessions were completed for this album. The band includes flutist Sam Most, trumpeter Rolf Ericson (who achieved his greatest fame with Duke Ellington), Wyatt Ruther (previously a sideman with Dave Brubeck), vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, and the somewhat obscure pianist Johnny Morris. Rich's pulsing drums are right in front in their aggressive arrangement of Horace Silver's blues "Blowin' the Blues Away," in which each soloist seems stimulated by the musician preceding him. "Caravan" begins with the leader's thunderous solo, though it quickly softens with Rich taking a backseat to Most and Ruther; the remainder of the band makes a delayed entrance. Mainieri contributed the exciting blues "Young Blood," which showcases his best solo on the date. The vibraphonist is also the featured soloist in the mellow interpretation of "I Remember Clifford," where he is backed by the haunting blend of trumpet and flute, with Rich staying very much in the background. Reissued as a limited-edition CD by Verve in 2005, this should be considered an essential Buddy Rich recording. ~ Ken Dryden Buddy Rich Blues Caravan Songs Blues Caravan Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) an unusual cast of characters Unavailable for years except in various Verve re-issue packages, and then only in bits and pieces, this particular Rich recording features the unusual combination of flute, played ably by Sam Most, a colleague from Buddy's sideman gig with Harry James, and vibes, in the personage of Mike Mainieri, a gifted and expressive protege discovered by Rich. Rolf Ericson is wondeful as a Miles-inspired trumpeter and was apparently added to Buddy's working group for just this recording.
Tracks of note include Blowin' The Blues Away, Caravan, and Young Blood. These recordings represent the kind of work that Buddy was doing with his own group in the NYC area during this period of time, especially at Birdland. This is not my favorite set of 'ballads', however, and this factor is the reason for my 4 Star rating more than anything.
It's rumoured that Buddy so liked the sound of his drums on this recording that he pestered drum manufacturers to build him drums that would always sound just like this! His kit does sound great on these tracks.
This recording is a must-have for any BR aficionado, or for anyone interested in small group straight-ahead hard bop. Recordings by Rich to compare this to would be The Driver (still unavailable so far as I know), or Playtime (available but hard to find). Submitted by rick (Arvada CO) Was This Review Helpful? Photographer: Patrick Demarchelier. Elton John once claimed that he could remember The One among his latter-day albums because it was the first he recorded without drugs or alcohol. If true -- and there's no reason to doubt him -- that could be the reason why this has more character than most of his albums since the early '80s, holding together well in its deliberately measured, mature songcraft by Elton and Bernie Taupin. There's less gloss than on many of his late-'80s ...

Trumpeter, composer, music theorist, and cultural activist Wadada Leo Smith has been a leading light in the jazz and new music vanguard for nearly 40 years. His numerous recordings for Black Saint, Moers Music, Pi, Boxholder, ECM, Tzadik, and other labels in Europe, Japan, and the United States are all elements of the evolutionary progress of his wonderfully idiosyncratic system called "new world music." This four-CD box set on John Zorn's Tzadik label is incontrovertible proof ...
