The famous 1st Div. of the U.S. Army is the background for this World War II film. Marvin stars as an experienced sergeant with four teenagers in his squad. Combat period covers the landing in North Africa through the invasion of Europe. "The Big Red One" was based on director/screenwriter Sam Fuller's personal experiences as a soldier in World War II. The Robert Carradine character is based directly on Fuller himself.
Film was first proposed as a project for John Wayne in the 1950s.

Filmed on location, with Israel standing in for North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. Scenes depicting the Rhine Valley were filmed in Ireland and featured Fuller's wife, Christa Lang, but were eventually cut from the film.
Rated BBFC AA by the British Board of Film Censors. Big Red One Reviews: "...A picture of palpable raw power which manages both intense intimacy and great scope at the same time..."
-- Cart., Variety "...Handsome, technically first-rate....Fuller is a nervy, no-nonsense Hollywood original..."
-- Vincent Canby, New York Times "It now seems to be Fuller's masterpiece, maybe the most unpretentious war movie ever."-- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times "This is Marvin's picture, and he dominates it not with heroics and speechmaking but with competence, patience, realism and a certain tender sadness."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "[I]t now explodes onscreen with the brash extremes of cynical violence, heartache, and profane humor that define Fuller's cinematic style."
-- Premiere Staff, Premiere "It's vivid stuff, with an intimacy and intensity not found in later war movies..."
-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound "From the chaos on Omaha Beach to the scene with the little girl dying in Lee Marvin's arms, this is a film that burns deep into your brain."-- Total Film Staff, Total Film Big Red One | List Price | $26.99 (You save $4.84) | | Studio | Warner Home Video | | Orig Year | 1980 | | All Time Sales Rank | 51503 | | CD Universe Part number | 6838024 | | Catalog number | 70590 | | Discs | 2 | | Release Date | May 03, 2005 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Also Known As | Samuel Fuller's The Big Red One | | Running Time | 163 Minutes | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Dubbed; Special Edition; Subtitled | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Dubbed; Special Edition; Subtitled |
Big Red One Movie Review My best war film Not to many words here, just one of the best war films ever made. Saving private Ryan might of had a great start, but this is the real deal and explains the battle itself. One of the best ever, from one of the most underated directors. Ok Ok - good but not GRREAT Saw this flick when just a teenager and was very impressed by it. Almost 20 years later i will say it is a good war movie but to rate it with 5 stars with thes classics in mind is not serious: Guns of Navarone, Eagle has landed, Platoon, etc. Still the performances is what keeps this film flowing and not what actually happens. War is survival Wonderful movie about WAR. Not the archetypical movie. Survival is the only glory for the soldiers... Submitted by pedrogz2 (Segovia, Spain) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Lee Marvin!!! The addition of the extra minutes, scenes makes this movie much better than the theatrical release. Lee Marvin adds to the quality of the movie. Submitted by Roger (Missouri) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Big Red One DVD "The real glory of war," Samuel Fuller said, "is surviving." A decorated combatant with the famed U.S. First Infantry in WWII, Fuller survived. His 1980 film version of his war experiences did not until now. Working with 70,000 feet of vault materials and Fuller's shooting script, critic/filmmaker Richard Schickel heads a reconstruction that adds over 40 minutes and transforms a truncated but admired war film into an epic masterwork. Lee Marvin, in a richly layered performance now revealed as one of his finest, stars as the sergeant of peach-fuzzed riflemen fighting from North Africa to Normandy and across Europe. The film is the squad's combat diary, war as it's fought and sweated and bled, and, maybe, survived.

| | Peisha McPhee Out Of The Blue CD (1997)
Big Red One review
$12.05 When one applies for a job, sometimes the response is that you're overqualified. The same may be the case for Peisha McPhee. Her classically trained, strong, clear voice of operatic proportions doesn't always fit well with the songs on the play list, songs that require somewhat more vocal dynamics than McPhee gives. Trying hard as she can to restrain her powerful voice, she comes on too strong for such pop material as "Ill Wind" and "Little Girl Blue," which require greater subtlety than McPhee provides. At the same time, her voice and demeanor go well with songs that have a strong emotional tug, such as "Who Can I Turn To?" There's also a cleverly contrived dubbed a cappella duet on "Isn't It Romantic." But her forte is in the Gershwin material. "The Man I Love" and the Gershwin medley require the dramatic reading that a formidable voice like McPhee's can give them. Her sole accompaniment for this session is pianist, composer, and voice teacherMel Dangcil. Usually the concern ...
