The only thing not wrong on Metromania is Rodney Matthews' beautiful cover artwork. Otherwise, this LP bears all the signs of a fallen group on the verge of disintegration -- which is what happened as soon as the recording sessions were over. The music has absolutely nothing to do with earlier Eloy albums. It is very early '80s, full of cold synthesizers, vocoders, flat drums, and heavy metal guitars whenever things try desperately to rock. It could be the Buggles, "Mr. Roboto"-era Styx, or any other synth pop group of the day. But the major problem is that despite this radical change (for the worst) in musical direction, Frank Bornemann and friends stick to the same kind of lyrics they were using in the mid-'70s, tales of personal growth and metaphysical pondering best exemplified by these lines from "Follow the Light": "I was so lonely/Waiting, hoping for sight in the dark/ And it was only/The light inside that provided the spark." The inadequateness between progressive rock's spirituality and the cold production (and moral) values of the decade is very painful. At least an artist like Rupert Hine chose topics from the age of information to build highly respectable synth pop. All Metromania achieves is sounding like third-rate Hine, especially on the single "The Stranger" (a flop). "Follow the Light," the longest track at nine minutes, manages to push forward a catchy chorus the likes of which were found on Yes' 90125 album, but that's not enough to redeem this monumental failure. ~ François Couture

Before recording this album, Eloy's fifth, Frank Bornemann had to rebuild his group. With Klaus Peter Matziol (bass), Detlev Schmidtchen (keyboards), and Jürgen Rosenthal (drums), he had the lineup that would become known as the "classic" Eloy. Furthermore, this version of the band crowned him producer, giving him a wild card to do what he had in mind. Thus the transformation of the group from a blues-rock-influenced avatar of Jethro Tull (circa Benefit and Aqualung) to a symphonic progressive rock group leaning toward Dark Side of the Moon-era Pink Floyd was completed with the release of Dawn. A concept album co-written by Bornemann and Rosenthal, it tells the tale of a man who after a sudden death comes back as a ghost. He tries to pass on his newly acquired knowledge to his loved one (Jeanne, also the name of the girl in Power and the Passion). The album ends with his dissolving into light, closing on the quote, "Nous sommes du soleil" ("We are of the sun") from Yes' ...

Metromania CD music
$21.55 The Sky Singers join Holly Arntzen to sing about climate change. 1,600 students from Dunsmuir Middle School, and Glen Lake, Uplands, Macaulay and Keating elementary schools join Arntzen and the Dream Band (musicians Sinclair, Boyle, and Roessingh) in delivering messages about global warming, with songs such as \"Arctic Dragonfly,\" \"Roses in the Winter,\" and \"Winds of Change.\" Environment Canada provided support. Canadian musician and songwriter, Holly Arntzen, discovered at an early age a passion for music and performing. After studying classical French horn in Czechoslovakia she turned her attention to using her incredible vocal talents in the service of raising public awareness about the environment and the need for all of us to protect it. At about age seven, Holly experienced her first trauma with wildlife when a hapless black bear was shot behind the family homestead in North Vancouver. A sad day it was. There have been many sad days since. So many species are now endangered. Since that day she has been passionate about saving our environment and, in particular, endangered species. Holly comes from pioneering stock and a sea-faring family, always ready to tackle issues that seem insurmountable to others. Surviving as an environmental singer for over 25 years has given Holly an appreciation of these earlier life-styles. Fortunately she developed an approach to issues that is non-confrontational, focusing on education, rather than attacking the status-quo in offensive ways. Holly might be thought of as a modern day explorer. Working in collaboration, for many years with her late husband and producer Stephen Foster, and today with a group of talented musicians, she creates songs of innocence that carry a much deeper relevance. She is always ready to 'tilt at a windmill' if it will lead to deeper understanding of the important environmental issues that confront us in our daily lives. Holly has shared the stage with Stan Rogers, Herbie Hancock, Dan Hill, Paul Horn, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah McLachlan, Paul Hyde, Doug Bennett, David Sinclair, Fred Penner, The Arrogant Worms, Raffi and many others. Since the 1980's Holly has performed at major folk and children's festivals across Canada, done concert tours in most provinces, and taken part in many radio and television productions. In 1995 she was the only Canadian artist in Japan to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where she ended up singing for the Japanese Royal Family. More recently she has collaborated, through the Artist Response Team (ART), in developing in-school programs throughout Canada, working with thousands of children to help them learn songs about ecological issues, sing them in concerts and record them for CDs and Radio ...
