| | Jackie McLean Capuchin Swing CD (1960)
Portrait Of Jenny
$11.65 Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Walter Bishop Jr. (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Originally released on Bluenote (4038). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Saxman Jackie McLean's explorations of free jazz and the avant-garde were still a couple of years away when he cut this Blue Note album in 1960, but that doesn't mean CAPUCHIN SWING is a by-the-numbers affair by any means. Though its name isn't generally invoked when the tally of hard bop's greatest albums is made, it stands up alongside anything Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, et al were doing at the time. With trumpeter Blue Mitchell proving to be a perfectly matched sparring partner, McLean pushes bop harmonies and structures nearly to the breaking point with his intense improvisations on a batch of original compositions with a couple of outside tunes thrown in. Throughout, McLean stirs the sonic pot in such a fiery fashion, you can just tell something's cooking that he hasn't quite served up yet. One of McLean's more underrated albums from a plethora of Blue Note releases, 1960's ...

Personnel: David Binney (alto saxophone); Mark Turner (tenor saxophone); Craig Taborn (piano); Thomas Morgan (acoustic bass); Dan Weiss (drums). Some jazz folks who live in Manhattan are so provincial that if you asked them to compose a bunch of songs that were mindful of other cities, they probably couldn't do it. Writing about the pleasures of Rome or Montreal doesn't come easy when one's idea of international travel is taking a subway ride from Central Park West to Union Square. But ...

Portrait Of Jenny
$5.99 We'll add more to this as time goes by, but here's who we are in a nutshell.Suzanne Kramer and Michael McGovern make up the core of the Sugar Ponies. We wanted to be the Pony Girls, but that is a lesbian, S&M sex fetish involving riding crops and whatnot. To avoid brand confusion, we modified it to the Sugar Ponies. The main reason we are doing this project is to create music together. We love it. Sure we hope to sell some CDs - they cost enough! - but really, its the love of making music that keeps us going through the more expensive and difficult moments of the process. We hope you like the music. If you want to join our mailing list, you can send us an email at info@sugarponies.com.Below are the lyrics to one of our songs, Kiss Me...I don't think you really get how you make me feelbut I can't catch my breath and my head it's starting to reeland I don't think I'm gonna get through tonight like thisno I don't think I can do itI don't think I'm gonna get through thisWatching you watching me's driving me out of my headwas I only dreaming baby when you said those sweet words you saidand I don't think I'm gonna get through tonight like this andIf you just kiss me you'll understandIf you just kiss me you'll understandIf you kiss me now you'll know how I feelIf you ...
