| | Gates Of Slumber Hymns Of Blood & Thunder CD (2009)
Peter Pan Speedrock/Zeke
$11.49 Indiana's the Gates of Slumber is the greatest American biker doom band not fronted by Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Guitarist/vocalist Karl Simon is very much in the Wino neighborhood, vocally, offering a hoarse shout with a surprising upper range, but as a guitarist he's much more obviously descended from Tony Iommi; a lot of the riffs on this (and every Gates album) could have come off Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and/or Sabotage. That's not a bad thing, of course; classicism and craft have long been prized in metal. Besides, the band sounds astonishing on this release. Producer Sanford Parker has given them a full, analog sound that pours from the speakers and fills the room with warm waves of distorted guitar, thundering drums that sound like tympani, and a rumbling bass sound like the world's ...

| | Helmet Size Matters CD (2004)
Peter Pan Speedrock/Zeke
$12.65 In an age of media-hyped band reunions, many music fans are understandably wary of comeback albums. Longtime devotees of reunited groups complain about lineup changes and yearn for the old sound, while newer and younger fans reach for the "classics" to see what they missed. Bands mounting comebacks need to work twice as hard to prove themselves. Luckily, Helmet has never been afraid of a little hard work.
After ...
| | Ajattara Apare CD (2006) (Import) Import
Peter Pan Speedrock/Zeke
$30.55 Ajattara is the sound of primordial nightmare. Attempting to describe their music in less abstract terms, one could always mention it is predominantly mid-tempo, riff-heavy black metal with distant, astral synths. Yet that is just a lame scratch on the surface when dealing with such a true enigma as Ajattara undoubtedly are. As those fortunate enough to have heard the obscure demos the main man Ruoja (guitar, vocals) created in his lone cabin in the woods during late nineties know, the Ajattara sound has been decidedly constant. The line-up was finally completed with Malakias I (drums) and Atoni (bass) in preparation for the recording of the first album "Itse" ("self"). The album made a remarkable impact on the public with its brutal, yet crystal-clear sound and the sheer strength of the material itself. Special heed must be given to Ajattara's lyrics, remarkable for being clich‚-free and poetic, yet disturbing and haunting as only a bad dream arising from deep dank soil of the local woodlands can be. ...
| | Zach Fischer Band CD (2006)
Peter Pan Speedrock/Zeke
$11.39 "I think the first thing people think when the four of us walk onstage, is 'What the hell is this going to sound like?' " Zach Fischer admits that his band is tough to size up at first glance. In person, they are four people with four very distinct styles and musical tastes. "This band definitely doesn't have a 'look'. Except that we look like we might be four people from four different bands. And our name certainly doesn't tell you anything about what you're going to hear." In fact, the name came about as a result of the group being unable, (or more like unwilling) to pick a name that represented all four members and their sound. "I was playing regular shows as a solo act when we formed the band. We got a set together in about three weeks and decided that we were ready for an audience. But the band name was always one of those issues that someone would bring up and the rest of us would groan and say 'later!' We had this very Zen attitude, like we shouldn't think about it; the perfect band name will come to us when it's time. On the night before our first gig, the booker called me to ask me what my new band was called. I think I sat in silence on the other end of the line for a couple seconds before admitting that we hadn't quite figured that one out. So when we walked up to the club the next ...
