| | Donovan Summer Day Reflection Songs CD Donovan Discography of CDs
Donovan's early recordings--those originally released on Pye (Hickory in the US) in 1965--have been recycled mercilessly over the years. Remarkably, this is the first time that all released versions of those tracks have appeared on one package. SUMMER DAY REFLECTION SONGS offers the definitive collection, gathering together Donovan's first two albums, three singles and sundry EP tracks. "Catch The Wind" (single version with strings/album version without), "Colours" (single version with harmonica/album version without) and "Ballad Of A Crystal Man" (original EP version/album version with extra verse) are joined by the rarely reissued "Every Man Has His Chain." First surfacing on a French EP, this song seems to be an abandoned set of lyrics over the guitar rhythm that eventually backed "Catch The Wind."
Donovan's music progressed in leaps and bounds within the space of a year, from fledgling folksinger to the psych-pop pioneer who cut "Sunshine Superman" with Mickie Most. Many of the highlights in this progression occur on the second album, "Fairytale," especially "Summer Day Reflection Song," "Jersey Thursday," and the sublime "Sunny Goodge Street," which hinted at the sophisticated arrangements John Cameron would conjure up for Donovan over the next couple of years.

$13.59 In THE BIRDS, Alfred Hitchcock's heart-pounding follow-up to PSYCHO, the director couples a tone of rigorous morality with dark humor to create a thriller that begins as a light comedy and ends as an apocalyptic allegory. Tippi Hedren (Melanie Griffith's mother) carries the picture in her first film role ever, embarking on a career as an icy-cool leading lady. Loosely based on a Daphne du Maurier story and a Santa Monica newspaper account, "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes," THE BIRDS also features groundbreaking special effects that, in 1963, surprised and delighted audiences.
Wealthy reformed party girl Melanie Daniels (Hedren) enjoys a brief flirtation ...
| | Guadalcanal Diary Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man/Jamboree CD (2003)
Summer Day Reflection Songs music CDs
$10.39 Collectables combined Guadalcanal Diary's first two albums -- 1984's Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man and 1986's Jamboree, both originally released on Elektra -- for this 2003 release. The first album, produced with a small budget by Don Dixon, helped establish them as a cult group, while the second -- produced mostly by Rodney Mills, with a couple songs produced by Steve Nye -- laid the foundation for 2X4, their third and best album. While 2X4 was easily the group's apex, the two albums on this disc are hardly baby steps, and some devout fans even view them as their favorites. Though the group strikes a strong resemblance to peers R.E.M., Murray Attaway's unique songwriting is enough to make the musical similarities seem less problematic. ~ Andy Kellman
Full title - Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man/Jamboree. Thanks to R.E.M., there was no shortage of Southern guitar pop bands in the early '80s, but Guadalcanal Diary was different from the rest. While their songs and melodies were as melodic and approachable as R.E.M., the Byrds, or any of their imitators, singer/guitarist Murray ...
| | Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society CD (1968) (Import) England; Remastered; United Kingdom
Summer Day Reflection Songs songs
$25.59 Contains original 15-track mono album as well as 12-track stereo version.
It's easy to imagine the confusion with which this manifesto for the defense of the status quo was received on its release in 1968. The world was in turmoil and the pose of the Street Fighting Man, rebellious and politically aware, was far sexier than the quaint homebody image the Kinks present here. The title track finds Ray Davies proudly declaring himself a preservationist of custard pies, vaudeville, and such comic book characters as Desperate Dan. However, these slices of suburban life have weathered a lot better than most of their contemporaries.
The Kinks were working in their own homey little world, as evidenced by songs such as the album's title track, "Picture Book," about family snapshot albums, and "All of My Friends Were There" whose very un-rebellious subject is public embarrassment. To compound the weirdness there's also "Big Sky," a classic Kinks song about God that's not remotely religious, ...

$14.49 Director Mel Stuart battled for years to get the clearance to release this film on video. Lucky for us, because even today, it is an incredibly moving portrait of a community coming together in the aftermath of the violent Watts riots. The emotion conveyed in the music and subjects of the film culminate in a revealing portrait of a strong African American community that resonates today.
The film centers on the Watts Summer Festival concert at the Los Angeles Coliseum in August, 1972. Unique performances ...
