Clone Defects coasted to a dead stop in late 2004, freeing Timmy "Vulgar" Lampinen to work up the spattered, enjoyably unhinged art-punk of Human Eye. Recorded with the Piranhas' Ryan Sabatis, the band's self-titled In the Red debut emphasizes muddy, two- and three-note basslines that give Vulgar's third-generation Iggy vocals something weighty to lean on. The guitar skitters on the edge of that bass, too -- "Girl Namned Troble," (sic) "Episode People," and "Age" hew closer to a recognizable structure, but Human Eye is better when the instruments freak out as much as Vulgar. "Car Was Alive" is a series of staccato phrases fighting with studio echo, "First Taste of Crime"'s take on vintage English punk could explode at any second, and "Seymour" showcases Vulgar's irritating/captivating version of singing. Human Eye aren't strangers to guitar feedback, but there are also stretches of what could be an echoplex or some other destructive sound device. They wail pure noise on "Time Continuum" and spend part of "Sly Glass Foam" exploring a similar space. (Sabatis' guest sax on the latter is a nice touch, as is the xylophone tinkling politely beneath belches of electronic squelch.) Single "Chew Raw Meat" cleans up a little, offering a compact guitar riff over bass hum, hyperactive drums, and a title chant guaranteed to make it an anti-radio hit. But Human Eye's best showing has to be "Kill Pop Culture"." As leering keys and deliriously fuzzy guitar fill out the bass-heavy background, lines like "I'm gonna kill Eminem with a pair of sheers/Electrical rollium guitar attack with ear piercing noise," make Vulgar sound like Jonathan Richman on a very, very bad day. ~ Johnny Loftus

Little Richard Georgia Peach CD  (1991)

Human Eye album
CD $12.45  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Recorded between 1955 & 1959. Includes liner notes by Billy Vera. Richard Penniman - aka Little Richard, aka the Beauty, aka the Georgia Peach (hence the title) began recording in 1951 (see Bear Family's excellent THE FORMATIVE YEARS 1951-53) but he didn't really hit his stride until his tenure at Specialty Records. While there, beginning in 1955 with "Tutti Frutti," he turned out a long string of hits - piano driven, falsetto laden, three chord rockers pounded out at dangerously fast tempos - that influenced countless artists. The best of them -- "Long Tall Sally," "Lucille," "Slippin' and Slidin'", "Rip It Up," "Ready Teddy," "Keep a Knockin'" and more - are collected on this definitive one disc best-of, along with less familiar ("Ooh! ...

Yardbirds Ultimate! CDs  (2001)

Human Eye CD music
CD $21.09  4.1 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Recorded between 1963 and 1968. Includes liner notes and song annotations by Cub Koda. With two discs, 52 songs and a 52-page book, this is a wonderful roller coaster ride through the vitally important Yardbirds catalog. Not only did guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page emerge from their ranks, but the group spearheaded a unique meld of blues and ferocious rock & roll. Formed in the era of British blues bands, the Yardbirds released a series of singles that gave them Top 40 clout. Though this hastened the exit of Clapton, who decried their abandonment of a purer strain of blues, it created some incendiary, forward-looking material anchored in one of the era's underrated rhythm sections. Flush with the experimentation that was fueling the era, there are countless treasures to be heard here. "I Can't Make Your Way" is a mix of skiffle, cowboy swagger, and infectious riffing. "He's Always There" is pre-psych fuzziness combined with cool background vocals and handclaps. And then of course, there are all the hits, richly mastered and delivering a hefty wallop. Those who worship at the Guitar God altar will have their prayers answered on July 17, when Rhino delivers The Yardbirds - Ultimate!, the first-ever collection to include tracks by the patron saints of guitar rock: Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. ...

Exploding Hearts Guitar Romantic CD  (2003)

Human Eye music CDs
CD $12.95  5 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
At first glance, the Exploding Hearts seem like mere revivalists. From the pink and yellow cover to their 1977 looks to their influences, it would be easy to dismiss them. But you need to hold the phone a minute and listen, because the Exploding Hearts are the best punk band to come along in a long time, maybe since the original wave. About those influences, here is a partial list: the early Clash if Mick Jones wrote all the songs and the Only Ones or Buzzcocks at their emotional best, but also classic power pop sounds like a (much) tougher Rubinoos, rock & roll like a tighter and sober New York Dolls, and the lo-fi approach of Billy Childish. Guitar Romantic is an amazingly raw and melodic debut, fully realized and original despite the obvious debt to the punk past. It is difficult to pinpoint just what it is about the band that helps overcome their idol worship. Maybe it is the love and authenticity that they pour into the worship, the raw production that smashes the guitars and bass into a whirling mess of tuneful noise, or the wonderfully tough but tender vocals. Most likely it is the songwriting. Too many bands that seek to re-create a sound or an era don't have the tunes to back it up. Not the Hearts. Every song on Guitar Romantic makes a bid to be the best on the album: "I'm a Pretender" is a jaunty kick in the head, "Sleeping Aides & Razorblades" is an ultra-catchy doo wop-inspired ballad with a brilliant guitar line, "Thorns in Roses" is a rollicking ...

Lost Sounds CD  (2004)

Human Eye songs
CD $11.85  Audio Samples
Led by Jay Jay (akaJay Reatard of the Reatards) and Alicja Trout (Clears, River City Tanlines), Memphis' Lost Sounds are a glorious mess of punk rock artsiness gone awry in all the right places. Their 2004 In the Red effort, simply titled Lost Sounds, is a punk rock dance party guaranteed to merrily demolish every piece of furniture in the room. But this paranoid rampage is a far cry from the faux-sexy bass'n'drum din pumped out by the likes of Death from Above 1979. "Those things they put inside me/ You know they make me nervous," wails Jay through a cacophonous din of twitchy surf guitars and stuttering keyboards. Elsewhere the band declares that the end of the world is, "worth a laugh." And you get the feeling they mean it. With a pedigree that includes some of the most raucous noise outfits to emerge from the Memphis scene, the Lost Sounds avoid the traps of by-the-numbers punk or southern-flavored garage rock and instead offer up a sound that is more akin to savage disco. That being said, their adventurous sonic attack is bold and sometimes abrasive. Ample melodies are buried in the din for anyone brave enough to sift through the noise to find them. A danceable disaster, the band's chaotic post-apocalyptic new wave sound explodes from ...

Dirtbombs If You Don't Already Have A Look CDs  (2005)

Human Eye album
CD $14.29  Audio Samples Definitive Album
"The best albums are all compilations, anyway. Why? Because they're made up of SINGLES, duh," Mick Collins writes in his liner notes to the If You Don't Already Have a Look collection of various 7" sides, compilation tracks, and unreleased items, and you've got to admit that Collins walks it like he talks it. The Dirtbombs have released three albums and about twenty 7"ers (by themselves or as splits) during their first decade of doing the rock thing, and while the 2001 album Ultraglide in Black still stands as their most impressive sustained effort, if you're only going to own one Dirtbombs item during the course of your lifetime, If You Don't Already Have a Look may well be the way to go. Disc one features 29 Dirtbombs originals, disc two offers up 23 inspired covers, and if you want to hear Collins and his partners in crime letting loose with the full range of their sonic possibilities and influences, this set boasts a little bit of everything they do. You want punk rock? Cue up "Words That Hurt." You wanna hear some cool neo-Britpop? Try "Encrypted." Need a deliciously sleazy ode to the joys of summer, teenage style? "Cedar Point '76" fills the bill. How about some straight-up noise? "Brucia I Cavi" merits your attention. Gotta have a kick-ass car song? You need "High Octane Salvation." In the market for a glorious non-electronic Rolling Stones mash-up? The cover of "No Expectations" will make you smile. Solid '60s-style R&B your thing? "The Sharpest Claws" should be on your list. Wanna hear the greatest Lou Rawls cover ever? ...
