Includes video for "Why Do You Love Me." This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Garbage: Shirley Manson (vocals, electric guitar); Duke Erikson (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, Mellotron, synthesizer, programming); Steve Marker (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, synthesizer, bass instrument, programming); Butch Vig (electric guitar, bass instrument, drums, programming). Additional personnel: Dave Grohl (drums). As polished and professional as it was, Garbage's third album, Beautiful Garbage, killed whatever momentum the quartet had as the LP commercially crashed and burned not long after its fall 2001 release. Subsequently, the band faded out of view, taking a long hiatus before regrouping in 2004 to record their fourth album, Bleed Like Me, which was finally released in the spring of 2005. Although it was released halfway through the first decade of the 21st century, it belongs to the midpoint of the last decade of the 20th century, sounding like a virtual Cliff Notes of the sounds, themes, and styles of the post-grunge '90s. As they beefed up the guitars, the band have toned down some of the electronica underpinnings that have been present since their debut -- they've not been excised, merely subdued, so this is still recognizably the work of a group that called their second album Version 2.0 with their tongue firmly planted in cheek. But Garbage don't just hark back to their earlier work on Bleed Like Me, they conjure all kinds of ghosts from the '90s, building "Sex Is Not the Enemy" on a Kim Deal bassline, while pasting together a guitar riff straight off of Stone Temple Pilots' Purple and a chorus from Elastica's classic "Stutter" for the album's first single, "Why Do You Love Me." Other sounds of the '90s flutter throughout the album -- the title track reaches back even further, as its cavalcade of misfits uncannily recalls Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" in its structure, sentiment, and melody -- while lead singer/lyricist Shirley Manson trots out a litany of doomed relationships, kinky sex, wallowing despair, teenage cutters, and hostile confrontations, all topics that were de rigueur for '90s alt-rock. Manson doesn't seem like she's pandering -- several songs appear to cut close to the bone, suggesting that she's been through a particularly painful breakup recently -- and neither do the band. They're all old pros and they construct their music well, so it's hooky and loudly stylish. Problem is, it's a style that's about ten years out of date. Bleed Like Me doesn't sound like a revival, it feels like it's out of time, as if the band doesn't quite know how to do anything else but sound like it's the heyday of post-grunge alt-rock. Since the band's drummer and chief sonic architect, Butch Vig, helped create that sound with the albums he produced for Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, and L7, that's not a surprise, nor is it necessarily a disappointment, because the music is not bad. He and his colleagues remain talented, capable professionals, crafting an appealing, tightly constructed album that plays to the group's strengths. It's an enjoyable record, but it's hard to escape the nagging feeling that Garbage has painted itself into a corner: they haven't found a way to expand their sound, to make it richer or mature -- they can only deliver more of the same. While they may be able to do this well, it is nevertheless more of the same. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Garbage's mantra for BLEED LIKE ME could be "that which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger," given the emotional and creative upheaval this unit went through in the four years that elapsed between this disc and 2001's BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE. Following personal conflicts and health woes for both Butch Vig and Shirley Manson, the quartet stripped down its sound and amped up the guitars to create an angst-laced album reminiscent of the Breeders and Foo Fighters. They were all about differnt things shirley went through or knew people who have. One of my favs were "Bleed like me" basically about 5 differnt peoples live and what they went through. Another one of my favs are "sex is not the ememy- a in your face song and really raises a point about the media, happy home, the last song on the cd a really peaceful song, nice way to end the cd. Has a beauiful eending at the end of that song.Shirley really said what she felt on this cd, and i think alot of people out there can relate i know i can. Garbage go harder, glammer, sludgier. Despite the mixed reviews for this album, I can confide to you that it actually is quite a satisfying listen.
Even if their glossy version of shoegaze dance and electronic rock is what I, like most fans, love most about their music, I can appreciate the stripped-down areas they are exploring here. In short: Bleed Like Me casts Garbage as a hard rockin' glam band, complete with foot stompers out of T. Rex territory. There are still traces of the dream pop lite that they exploited brilliantly in 1995, too. The sludgy hard riffs marry glam rock's crude swagger on "Bad Boyfriend". Interestingly, this track is resembled by Giant Drag's "You F*** Like My Dad", leading one to ponder if Giant Drag might indeed be the new Garbage.
Anyway, the great neo-new-wave tracks "Run Baby Run", & "Right Between The Eyes", are solid and quite admirable for their own authenticity. Instead of recreating something directly from The Cure for the former or something from The Pretenders for the latter, they actually made two songs that the aforementioned acts would kill to have in their catalogue.
Some of it fails. "Boys Wanna Fight" is failed shoegazer disco. "Why Don't You Come Over" is [band acknowledged] crap. It's the "Untouchable" for this album...the "wtf?" track.
"It's All Over But The Crying" is simply their greatest ballad, all John Lennon in mood and textural production; heartbreaking lyrics. You'd have to hate music to hate this song.
"Bleed Like Me" is a complete rip off of Lou Reed's "Take A Walk On The Wild Side", but we acknowledge this, move on, and discover: DAMN. THIS STILL ACTUALLY IS AWESOME. Beautiful musicality; lovely, apt instrumentation.
WHY DO YOU LOVE ME = Best Rock Single of 2005. End of Story.
It's not Garbage of old.
It's not Garbage of new.
It's Garbage in 2005 playing a rock band. And they did a superior job. Submitted by shirleebee (NEW YORK CITY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

First half is lame, last half is OK I was ready to give up on this CD after pressing the "skip" button halfway through each of the first four songs (four over-produced, nondescript rockers).
But, things got more interesting starting with track #5, and I enjoyed the remainder of the CD at a 3-star level.
