Like many "metal" bands of the mid-'00s, New Jersey natives Strength in Numbers like their thrash, their hardcore, and even their emo in fair and even quantities; and they proceed to splatter the hard and the soft all over their 2005 debut album, The Veil. This duality is also explored via the use of two full-time vocalists -- one screeching, one actually singing -- who counter-balance each other as regularly as the band's dual guitars, for an ongoing battle between harsh vs. clean that seems inescapable in the post-Nirvana universe. At least it tends to work here, and typical Strength in Numbers fare such as "Gods of War," "The Awakening," and "Houdini" play to one's most visceral and heartfelt instincts at any given turn -- and often at once! To that end, among the more obvious "sons of emo" contained here, "Eight Breaths Per Second," the title track and "Reach to Die" are particularly melodic throughout, but inevitably launch into all sorts of violent thrashing at some point. Elsewhere, the dramatically named instrumental set piece "Devoured by the Bridges Aflame" wins the coveted, most metallic song title award (by a hair -- see "Gods of War," above), and "Frostbite" the purest hardcore-spirit prize, thanks to its gang-shouted animosity. In conclusion, all things considered, The Veil is a mostly entertaining and compelling experience; formulaic, yes, but compelling, and a fine start for this young band. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | As Blood Runs Black Allegiance CD (2006)
Veil songs
$11.89 Despite their youth, the members of As Blood Runs Black spent several years digesting various influences and honing their chops before recording their 2006 debut, Allegiance -- a situation which largely explains the contradiction between its advanced musicianship but, at times, both immature and convoluted songwriting. The album's enticing and foreboding intro suggests black metal, yet restlessly assembled ensuing tracks like "In Dying Days," "The Brighter Side of Suffering" and "My Fears Have Become Phobias" quickly alert the listener to expect the unexpected, as the musicians fling themselves around a mosh pit propelled by several different metallic subgenres. The latter track, for instance, is an absolute smorgasbord: following a flurry of death metal riffs with intermittent displays of Cookie Monster grunts and hardcore shout-outs, then launching into a melodious trad metal guitar solo before descending into a blastbeat driven grindcore finale, complete with unintelligible burped vocals. At least the words spouted by all these different voices (and helpfully printed out within) remain relatively consistent ...

| | Punk Tribute To Weezer CD (2002)
Veil songs
$11.65 Embraced by alternative rock radio and cherished by indie rockers, Weezer have never been far removed from the punk gene pool. So the appearance of A Punk Tribute to Weezer isn't as great a stretch as an industrial tribute or a "Pickin' On Weezer" album (both of which are surely in the works in these tribute-crazed times). A largely West Coast 1980s punk crowd has shown up for this tribute, including the Angry Samoans with "Buddy Holly," which stays true to the original with only a snarly vocal and rougher production separating the two. Many of the bands tend to end up with the same pop-punk output, with highlights being the Vibrators with "Photograph" and an Urge Overkill meets BTO rendition of "Dope Nose" from unknowns the Targets. A few songs defy the pop-punk formula, although neither Dr. Know's homeless beachfront psychopath take on "Undone (The Sweater Song)" or Flipper's sludge-punk "Hash Pipe" successfully retools the originals. Like so many tributes, A Punk Tribute to Weezer is a mixed ...
| | John Foxx Cathedral Oceans CD (1997)
Veil album
$18.85 John Foxx used to be the frontman for the glam rock band Ultravox (even before Midge Ure). Listeners familiar with that band will be surprised to learn that Foxx has created an opus based on Claude Debussy's "Sunken Cathedral." They will be even more surprised to hear the symphonic synthesizers on Cathedral Oceans. This beautiful CD is quite a surprise -- and a pleasant one at that. Foxx has built some very serene and peaceful soundscapes that are perfect for relaxation and meditation. The arrangements are flawless. Foxx uses Gregorian chant samples to augment the pastoral ambience. The effect is inspiring and uplifting. It is impossible to ignore the rays of hope and the warm caresses of this CD. Deep listeners will achieve rejuvenation and catharsis. This CD will appeal to fans of Suzanne Ciani, Constance Demby, Liquid Mind, and John Flomer. It is essential e-music. ~ Jim Brenholts

| | Garrison Starr Airstreams & Satellites CD (2004)
Veil CD music
$14.75 Airstreams & Satellites is a respectable mainstream singer/songwriter effort, though there aren't many traces of the country music that some of Starr's press would lead you to expect. What country's here is mostly in her occasional Mississippi vocal curl. The production stresses assertive electric guitars that sparkle without getting overbearing, and the melodies are usually in service of her wary songs about the thrills and spills of getting close (or too close) to the emotions of herself and others. For love is at times "Like a Drug" to her, as she sings in one track -- not the first occasion that sentiment's been circulated in pop music, but at least she sounds like she believes it. If she's going to rock out, she's at her best when matching rousing, staunch riffs to songs of hope and encouragement, like "Hey ...
