The 2005 compilation SLOW MOTION collects songs that share the same pace and sensuality, and the same themes of eternal kisses, honey love, and bedroom eyes. The tunes are mostly drawn from a decade earlier, celebrating the soul crooners of the 1990s who were just beginning to explore hip-hop (with Motown influences still strong in their throats), while the lush productions of the 1980s were still glowingly conspicuous. SLOW MOTION basks in diversity, and includes pop-soul singers, rappers, and many others under one roof.
The track listing for SLOW MOTION contains some of the biggest smashes of the decade, including Boyz II Men's unabashedly weepy and ultimately sweet "End of the Road," and All-4-One's unlikely cover of a country smash, "I Swear" (each of which spent a considerable amount of time atop the pop charts). The compilation also picks out some of the most beautiful melodies of the era, from P.M. Dawn's sparsely affecting "I'd Die Without You" to Babyface's folksy acoustic-guitar ballad "When Can I See You" and TLC's uplifting "Unpretty."

| | LaShell Griffin Free CD (2004)
Slow Motion music CDs
$7.69 LaShell Griffin had been singing in church choirs for two decades before she heard about "Pop Star Challenge." The brainchild of Oprah Winfrey, this feature of her TV program was created in answer to the youth-obsessed aspect of the phenomenon of AMERICAN IDOL. While the songs Griffin performed on Winfrey's show were generally secular (though inspirational) pop, her debut album, a result of her winning the contest, reveals deep roots in gospel. With FREE, Griffin deftly navigates the line between sweet, original soul and songs of devotional faith.
On "Get Away," she unwinds in a neo-soul style comparable to Jill Scott, backed by a funk-driven beat. A few tracks later, Griffin sings a stirring version of the ballad "Man from Galilee" that would do Cissy Houston proud. The two tracks are from opposite sides of the fence, but they match brilliantly on this prismatic record. FREE reaffirms Oprah's knack for unveiling promising talent, and ...
| | Santana All That I Am CD (2005)
Slow Motion songs
$8.99 Continuing with the formula of its Grammy-winning predecessors, SUPERNATURAL and SHAMAN, 2005's ALL THAT I AM once again finds Carlos Santana pairing off with a diverse group of superstar musicians. While some of the combinations seem perfectly natural--the jam with Austin's Los Lonely Boys, "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love," is a match made in virtuoso heaven--others are more unexpected and showcase Santana's ability to master numerous strains of pop and rock. "Trinity" is an shredder's dream as Carlos squares off with Metallica's Kirk Hammett and neo-bluesman Robert Randolph, while tracks featuring Mary J. Blige and Outkast's Big Boi ("My Man") and Anthony Hamilton ("Twisted") offer the kind of R&B groove that made "Sway" such a smash.
As expected, the production on ALL THAT I AM is pristine, and Santana's guitar work is as impeccably fluid as ever, particularly on the albums two opening tracks. On both "Hermes" and "El Fuego," the singer/guitarist goes in alone and really cuts loose to indulge in the Latin rock fusion that brought him to prominence in the late ...
| | Jaheim Ghetto Classics CD (2006)
Slow Motion album
$15.65 GHETTO CLASSICS is Jaheim's third effort, an album heavily rooted in traditional R&B, and also one of his strongest. Don't be misled by the "traditional" tag, however. Like most contemporary R&B, Jaheim's music is deeply influenced by hip-hop, and the layered, top-tier production from KayGee (of Naughty by Nature) gives this album a smart, sophisticated sheen that is undeniably 2006. The appearance of rapper Jadakiss on the single "Everytime I Think About Her" further updates the sound.
But the ghost of Marvin Gaye is certainly milling about GHETTO CLASSICS in the form of the smooth, sensual vibe, the album's themes (love songs about commitment, devotion, and family), and in Jaheim's expressive, well-controlled romantic croon. In short, Jaheim mixes the traditional with the contemporary in perfect measure, making his solid ...

| | O'Jays So Full Of Love CD (1978)
Slow Motion music CDs
$8.85 None of the albums the O'Jays recorded for Philadelphia International in the 1970s were weak or disappointing, although some were stronger than others. So Full of Love isn't quite essential, and isn't in a class with Back Stabbers, Ship Ahoy or Family Reunion. But the platinum album does have a lot going for it, including the major hit "Use Ta Be My Girl," and the heartfelt ballads "Cry Together" and "Brandy," and the captivating "This Time Baby," which would become a hit for soul/disco diva Jackie Moore in 1979. A funk treasure that should have been a major hit was the intense "Strokety Stroke." Once again, the O'Jays worked with Philly's best -- not only Gamble & Huff, but also Thom Bell and Bunny Sigler. Love was a departure from their previous Philly International offerings in that it contained no social or political commentary whatsoever -- with the disco era in full swing, Eddie Levert felt that the market for R&B message songs had dried up. ~ Alex Henderson
This was the biggest hit album The O'Jays ever enjoyed, even though it wasn't as aesthetically transcendent as Ship Ahoy. But it came at the right time; there weren't many great group albums being produced in R&B at the time, and that's what this really was, even if Eddie ...
