Marian McPartland 85 Candles: Live in New York CDs (2005)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of David Benoit songs Marian McPartland celebrated her 85th birthday in style by hosting a lively session at Birdland with many guests (both young and old) who have appeared on her long-running NPR series. Whether she's a part of the audience or on-stage jamming with her friends, it's apparent that everyone in the club is having a blast. The romp through "I Love You" features potent solos by Phil Woods, Dave Douglas, Ravi Coltrane, and McPartland. Woods captivates the audience with his impressive solo introduction to singer Karrin Allyson, and captures the essence of the pianist's gorgeous "Twilight World" in a duet with its composer. Norah Jones is at her very best with the pianist interpreting timeless ballads like "The Nearness of You" and "September Song." McPartland displays her adventurous side with an intriguing improvised duet with guitarist Jim Hall (whose touch on his instrument is every bit as identifiable as his musical partner's is on hers). She is joined by Jason Moran for an unusually intriguing take of "Summertime." Roy Hargrove shines in a duet with McPartland on "My Foolish Heart." Flügelhornist Clark Terry takes solo honors in "Lester Leaps In," though Billy Taylor gives him a run for his money. Bill Charlap jokingly attempts to steal the show by sneaking in McPartland's "Kaleidoscope" (also known as "Theme from Piano Jazz") into the tail end of a solo medley. But the camaraderie among the musicians means no one is attempting to hog the spotlight; then again, no one has the need to do so. Bassist Gary Mazzaroppi and drummer Glenn Davis provide a solid rhythm section whenever one is needed, though Bill Crow takes over for "Tangerine." Excerpts from what was likely a very long party were broadcast in a two-hour special by NPR. Seven tracks omitted from the program are present on this valuable two-CD set, though three songs recorded that evening and aired were excluded. It would not be surprising to learn that enough music was taped to produce a follow up two-CD set from this very special birthday celebration. ~ Ken Dryden

Tower Of Power Urban Renewal CD (1975) Top Seller
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of David Benoit CD music In the early '70s, Tower Of Power was riding the crest of the funky R&B horn-band wave it had been instrumental in creating a few years earlier. 1974's URBAN RENEWAL is a solid testament to the group's endless creativity in delivering intense funk one minute, and sliding into a slippery soul ballad the next, with the occasional insertion of socially conscious lyrics.
The world-famous horn section is in excellent form, featuring founders Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka, with legendary members Mic Gillete, Greg Adams, and Lenny Pickett. Handling the majority of the vocals this time out is the exceptional Lenny Williams, arguably Tower Of Power's most suitable vocalist. Although original drummer David Garibaldi appears on one track, David Bartlett handles the drum duties here, locking expertly with the masterful bassist Francis Rocco Prestia. Highlights include the thoughtful opener "Only So Much Oil in the Ground," the ridiculously funky numbers "Maybe It'll Rub Off," and "(To Say the Least) You're The Most," and the popular ballad "Willing to Learn."
Recorded at Record Plant, Sausalito, California.

Mike + the Mechanics Word of Mouth CD (1991)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of David Benoit buy CD music Although it was less commercially successful than 1985's MIKE AND THE MECHANICS or 1989's THE LIVING YEARS, 1991's WORD OF MOUTH is nonetheless a fine pop-rock album. Mike Rutherford and his Mechanics--singers Paul Young and Paul Carrack, bassist Adrian Lee, and drummer Peter Van Hooke--have maintained a stable lineup from the beginning, which makes a notable difference in their sound in comparison to similar bands. Unlike albums where crews of session players back a singer-songwriter, there's a genuine "band" sound to WORD OF MOUTH.
The shared songwriting credits give the album a varied sound, and the interplay of Carrack and Young's soulful vocals with Rutherford's guitar and Carrack's keyboards gives the album a much more immediate and human quality than you find on the average MIDIed-to-death pop-rock album. Carrack's showcase "A Time and Place" is a particular standout.
Mid-price reissue of the third album, originally released in 1991, from Mike & The Mechanics', Paul Carrack, Adrian Lee, Mike Rutherford, Peter Van Hooke, & Paul Young. Ten tracks. EMI.
Recorded at The Farm, Surrey, England and Olympic Studios, London, England.

Shoemaker Brothers On The Road CD (2010)
20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of David Benoit CD music This Album was conceived On the Road while the Brothers traveled America on the First American tourThe Shoemaker Brothers hail from the Pacific Northwest, the progeny of Celtic and Nordic roots, they look like a mix between Viking athletes and merry men of ancient lore but sing like angels and play rock music with a classical musician's touch. Coming of age in a period marked by the Iraqi war, reflected on by the "You" revolution and overwrought with icons and iconoclasts, the Brothers, Samuel, Nathanael, Daniel and Gabriel play music that debunks conventional styles while naturally emanating from their talented hands.
Growing up as the four middle children of seven, the Brothers' musical education began as soon as each could walk. With seven children, the family's resources were stretched tight, but their parents always made the necessary sacrifices to provide instruments and music lessons for their children. Each child was expected to master a specific instrument, but with idle time, the Brothers traded instruments to try something new. Any visitor to the Shoemaker household found a crowded living room filled with cups of coffee, strong tea and the Brothers making up words and notes-following the lead of whomever held the guitar.
As each Brother became an adult, each began carving his own path. The oldest, Sam, joined the Marine Corps, serving two combat tours in Iraq. After four years in the marines, Sam left the Corps and matriculated at Washington State University to finish off his bachelor's degree. In the meantime, Nate and Dan, after spending time traveling in the Caribbean, joined Sam at WSU with the aid of scholarships from the music department. Gabie, the youngest Brother attended Whitworth University on a music scholarship for violin and voice, after receiving interest from the University's football program. No matter where the Brothers went in life, music came with them. Sam played the violin for his fellow troops in Iraq. During Sam's leave before his first deployment, the Brothers performed at their older brother's wedding, an event orchestrated around Nate's song "Never Forget." Dan traveled the West Coast and the Caribbean, supporting himself by singing and playing the guitar. Both Nate and Dan played in the WSU orchestra-Nate as principal cellist and Dan on viola. Gabie, not to be outdone by his brothers, played violin in Whitworth's orchestra when he wasn't starting defensive line for the football team.
After spending the holidays together in 2007, the Brothers played with the idea of taking their talent to the next level. As with most of the best decisions made in life, it was the daunting but obvious choice. With no more than the instruments they already owned, a full-size van, a lifetime worth of resourcefulness and a hunch that they had something special, the Shoemaker Brothers decided to dedicate themselves to their music and begin a National Tour. Playing gigs everywhere from one-horse towns to mega metropolises, bars to cafes, small and large music halls -any stage that would have them-the Brothers have built a strong following, one gig at a time.
Hundreds of shows later, the Brothers have gained poise and presence in front of a crowd. Attending a Shoemaker show is like paying for Coach, but getting First Class. The Brothers trade instruments after every song, and the same Brother rarely sings more than one song in a row. Each Brother has a distinct voice, but all of them are deep and melodic. Their songs range from energetic and deep to lighthearted and blissful. The lyrics range from poetic to direct, showcasing the complex nature of the Shoemakers' collective experience and personalities.
