One of singer Sandy Denny's finest post-Fairport Convention outings, 1972's SANDY finds the beloved U.K. folk singer backed by top-tier musicians, including Fairport peers Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick, as well as renowned pedal-steel guitarist "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow. "It'll Take a Long Time" opens the album in a beautifully sleepy manner, allowing Denny's emotive voice to shine, while her cover of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" veers down a country road, with Kleinow's plaintive guitar lines setting the mood. Although Denny remains best known for her work with Fairport Convention (and, of course, her vocals on Led Zep's "The Battle of Evermore"), this disc is on par with many of her best moments with any ensemble.

These 16 songs offer the briefest possible introduction to this remarkable singer and songwriter. THE BEST OF SANDY DENNY was compiled by Joe Boyd (who produced most of her recordings), and husband Trevor Lucas. The tracks are culled from the four solo albums that were released during her lifetime, three Fairport Convention releases, and work from the short-lived band Fotheringay, in which Lucas was a member.

The tracks run the gamut from orchestral splendor ("The Lady") to British folk-rock ("Tam Lin"). There are two songs by Richard Thompson (including a remarkable rendition of "For Shame of Doing Wrong"), but the bulk of the material was written by Denny herself. Denny possessed one of the most spiritually captivating voices of her era and wrote some bona fide classic songs. The set closes with one of her very finest and most beloved numbers, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes."

Sandy Denny recorded this, her first album in 1967, a year before joining Fairport Convention. THE ORIGINAL SANDY DENNY is more influenced by American folk music than her subsequent albums were. The instrumental lineup here is quite spare--there are just one or two acoustic guitars and Denny's remarkable voice. Both Tom Paxton, and Jackson Frank contribute a pair of songs to the collection. The latter was an American singer and songwriter with whom Denny was romantically involved. It was Frank who helped introduce the then 20-year-old singer to an assortment of American writers and folksingers at the London folk clubs where she performed and the coffeehouses that she frequented. Her version of "Pretty Polly" showcases her voice as she breaks out of melodic lines with heart-stopping swoops. Denny was a powerful and spiritually evocative singer, who in the year that these songs were recorded, briefly joined the Strawbs, before moving on to Fairport and wide acclaim. Hearing her singing here, it's no wonder she moved forward so assuredly and swiftly.

Sandy Denny's second solo album from 1972 has been digitally remastered with five bonus tracks and sleevenotes.

Includes liner notes by John Tobler.

Personnel: Sandy Denny (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Richard Thompson (guitar, mandolin); Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Dave Swarbrick (violin); John "Rabbit" Bundrick (piano, organ); Pat Donaldson (bass guitar); Timi Donald (drums); Linda Peter (background vocals).Uncut (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[B]alanced between trad-folk and impassioned Denny originals..."

Faust/So Far CD  (1972)

Sandy
CD $12.99  4 stars Audio Samples
Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart. Otherwise, SO FAR builds on the drastic pastiches of the first album: proto-industrial soundscapes evaporate into dreamier, layered ones and back again throughout the album's nine tracks. Faust didn't have the groove of Can, the thrust of Neu!, or the riffs of Amon Duul, but they had guts and an unsinkable sense of "anything goes." Given the success of industrial music and the uncompromising throb of the millennial American underground in places like Providence and Brooklyn, they also had a vision of the future. Essential for fans with adventurous ear drums. Julian Cope ...

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine." Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of ...

The remastered German edition includes four additional tracks and liner notes. Sandy Denny made several near-perfect albums in her career and LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ is most assuredly one of them. Sandy Denny North Star Grassman And The Ravens CD  (1971) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom

Sandy
CD $9.85  4.7 stars
Following her celebrated first stint with Fairport Convention and the dissolution of the short-lived folk rock super-group Fotheringay, Denny recorded a run of fine solo albums during the '70s, interrupted by an artistically-if not commercially-successful reunion with Fairport. THE NORTH STAR GRASSMAN, the first of those solo albums, was co-produced and engineered by the ever-reliable John Wood. It's business as usual as far as participating musicians go. Denny's former Fotheringay companions are present, and ex-Fairport guitar prodigy Richard Thompson is all over the album. Freed of the compromises of a democratic group, Denny is able to concentrate on her own material. However, she also finds room for a fine arrangement of the traditional "Black Waterside," a dip into her beloved rock & roll on "Let's Jump the Broomstick," and the obligatory Dylan cover, "Down In The Flood." But it is the quality of the original material that marks this album. Finest are the plaintive "Next Time Around," with a delicate string arrangement by Harry Robinson, and the moody "Late November." "John the Gun" ...

Further Down The Spiral
Nine Inch Nails Further Down The Spiral CD  (1995) (Import) Extended Play; Germany

Sandy
CD $13.59  5 stars Top 500
European edition with four different tracks from the U.S. version: "Self Destruction Part Three," "Heresy" (version), "Hurt" (live), and "Ruiner" (version). It has become clear that Nine Inch Nails' one-man fuse Trent Reznor has been given free reign to construct his releases in whatever ways he sees fit. And since he has continually railed against pop's constrictive borders, it should come as no surprise that FURTHER DOWN THE SPIRAL rebels against the standard remix album formula. Instead, Reznor allows like-minded deconstructionists to go wild with a blank canvas, and some dark hues provided by THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL. So rather than having dance mixes from the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, this 64-minute EP (!) features the technology-driven sonic landscapes of Aphex Twin, and the thorny abstractions of Foetus' J.G. Thirlwell. Few of these song titles match their DOWNWARD SPIRAL counterparts, choosing--like the mixes themselves--to only hint at the originals. "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)" charges with a new-found frenzy to the strains of Dave Navarro's guitar, only to veer off into a decidedly house music-like break. In the hands of the members of Coil, "The Downward Spiral (The Bottom)" becomes an industrial collage, incorporating bleak dins, dark ambient figures, and a grey-noise version of the "Closer" hook. Only "Hurt (Quiet)," the one track redone by a solo Reznor, resembles its former self. Soft but emotionally taxing, it becomes the sleek and brooding post-modern ballad it always threatened to. And like the rest of FURTHER DOWN THE SPIRAL, it's a gateway into Reznor's psyche--a place where the disenfranchised not only get their say, but get to remix it as ...

Beth Wood You Take The Wheel CD  (2003)

Sandy
CD $10.65
Beth Wood is a modern-day troubador, barefoot singer, award-winning songwriter, powerful vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, shameless harmonizer, poet, and communicator of joy. Beth grew up in Lubbock, TX, where she was classically trained in piano, violin, harp and voice. After spending two years studying voice and piano at Brevard College in North Carolina, Beth moved on to The University of Texas, where she picked up a degree in Literature and her first guitar. While teaching herself guitar, she joined a band and became part of the Austin music scene. After a few years of playing around Austin in her band, and then in a duo, Beth kissed her day-job goodbye and returned to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina to pursue music full-time. The natural beauty of her surroundings provided inspiration while the supportive community helped Beth to become a standout in the Asheville songwriters’ community. Now an established singer/songwriter, she resides in Arlington, Texas while continuously touring to support her seven independent releases.Beth also loves sports, and one of her weird hobbies is performing the National Anthem. She has done so at several major sporting events, including Texas Rangers Major League Baseball (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), Dallas Mavericks NBA Basketball (2004), and several minor league baseball and hockey events.Beth says… "I feel blessed to have the opportunity to make music for a living! I want to continue making music I believe in, and to continue spreading the word about independent music. For me this journey is not just about the music - it's about the connections we make through music and recognizing the importance ...

Nick Kizirnis Into The Loud CD  (2004)

Sandy
CD $8.39  Audio Samples
On Into The Loud, Nick Kizirnis, guitarist/vocalist for Eyesinweasel, The Mulchmen, Cage and Tobin Sprout solo records, has released a "classic Dayton alternative rock record," if such a term can exist in a city that has produced alternative rock greats such as Guided By Voices and The Breeders.Into The Loud is packed full of 15 songs that were recorded over the past three years or so, but the record sounds amazingly cohesive. Kizirnis was aided by several friends that are known to alternative rock fans. Jim Macpherson, a former member of GBV and the Breeders, plays drums on several tracks. John Shough, who has produced several GBV projects, recorded much of Into The Loud. Todd Robinson, owner of the famed LUNA Music, contributed bass to three tracks via Fed Ex.Although the CD is made up of 13 Kizirnis original tunes, there is a cover of an obscure GBV tune, Hank's Little Fingers. The other cover song, Dogg Bothered, is from Nick's former band mate, ...
