Greatest Hits CD music
$12.95 Short of Carri Coltrane, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more waifish and subtle jazz singer than April Aloisio, who is unlikely to be mistaken for a belter anytime soon. Her voice is small without being thin, and she uses subtlety and restraint to maximum advantage on the excellent Easy to Love. Though Brazilian jazz isn't the only thing on this CD, it's a very high priority. Aloisio successfully brings Brazilian elements to everything from Horace Silver's "Song for My Father" (which she scats her way through) and Bronislau Kaper's "Invitation" to Stevie Wonder's "Another Star" and Patrice Rushen's "You Love Me Only." The Chicago-based singer is equally impressive on a spare, impressionistic version of Cole Porter's "Night and Day" (which features tenor saxman Von Freeman) and a haunting detour into pop-folk territory on Jim Messina's "Keep Me in ...

| | Alice Cooper Live At Cabo Wabo 96 CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Greatest Hits songs
$10.49 By the late '90s, Alice Cooper wisely decided to start incorporating more and more uncommon and/or rarely played songs from yesteryear back into his live set, to the delight of longtime fans. A show at Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo Cantina from this era shows Cooper just starting to dig up some old nuggets, as evidenced by Live at Cabo Wabo '96. Strangely, though, instead of releasing the album shortly thereafter to signal the Coop's return back to basics, the album didn't hit record shops until almost ten years later, in 2005. Kicking things off with the song that he'll always be best known for, "School's Out," Cooper and his band churn out faithful, heavy metal- esque readings of the classics "Under My Wheels," "I'm Eighteen," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," and "Elected." But the tracks that will appeal most to hardcore enthusiasts will be the previously rarely performed "Desperado" (rumored to be a tribute to Jim Morrison) and "Teenage Lament '74." Also included are several then-newer tracks, which ...

| | Justice League New Frontier Justice League: The New Frontier CD (2008)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$13.49 Just as sports writing is a great place to start a journalistic career (rarely, later on, will a reporter get many opportunities to use verbs like "crush" and "pulverize"), so writing music for animated TV series and features is a great place to start a composing career. As those anthropomorphic animals and hyperkinetic humans flit across the screen, defying gravity and sense, the composer can exercise his or her imagination to accompany them. Envy Kevin Manthei, then, already a veteran of numerous game soundtracks and 26 episodes of Invader Zim, who provided music for the basketful of superheroes in the animated feature Justice League: The New Frontier. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, etc., are members of the league, which goes off to save the world, and Manthei gets to fly right beside them. But just as sportswriters may be bedeviled by tight deadlines and foreshortened column inches, Manthei had his own constraints. In his liner notes, he proclaims his love of Edward Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein, and Aaron Copland (even if he doesn't know how to spell Copland's name), and dreams of a 100-piece orchestra to play his approximations of their work. Alas, "Because of budget and timing," he admits, "the score was realized ...
