There is actually as much jazz and rock & roll as R&B on this intriguing and generous (it comes in with a running time of just under 80 minutes) disc from Bear Family, which features instrumentals from almost two dozen Hammond B3 players popular in Britain in the 1960s. Among the highlights of Hammond Heroes: 60's R&B Heroes are Steve Winwood's "Stevie's Groove," recorded in 1966 when he was still a member of the Spencer Davis Group; the fiery "Zoom Widge and Way" from drummer Bobby Graham with Kenny Salmon on organ; a hard-charging and jazz-inflected version of the gospel classic "Wade in the Water" with Graham Bond at the keys and a rhythm section of Jack Bruce on bass and Ginger Baker on drums from 1965, and the Nice's rendition of Charles Lloyd's "Sombrero Sam," featuring Keith Emerson on organ, from 1968. Also worth noting is the massive, swelling "Back in the Grass" recorded by the group Motherhood in 1968, and featuring Klaus Doldinger on tenor sax and James "Ham" Jackson on organ. The liner notes for this set are top-notch, beginning with a brief history of Laurens Hammond, the man who invented the Hammond organ (he also invented those familiar red and green 3-D glasses, by the way), and once he added Don Leslie's rotating speaker system to the organ frame, a stone cold classic instrument came to life. What we need now is for Bear Family to do a companion volume of American Hammond players like Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and Jimmy McGriff. ~ Steve Leggett
Rather than try for a complete cross-section of Hammondmeisters, this 23 track CD showcases the instrument in the hands of 1960s British rock bands, when it really came into its own. $21.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ John Digweed.
For John Digweed's third installment in the popular Global Underground series, the superstar DJ tones down his track selection a bit, focusing less on theatrical hands-in-the-air moments and more on subtle yet highly nuanced rhythm-driven tracks. Truthfully, it's quite difficult to pick out any "peak" moments, or any clear-cut anthems in the mix. From beginning to end, Digweed spins nothing but darkness-exuding records that inspire intoxicating abandonment. The music's sublime employment of enthralling mesmerization ...

Hammond Heroes: 60S R&B Organ Grooves
$11.49 On Sunday we celebrated the release of Artichoke's "26 Scientists Volume One Anning - Malthus" with a waffle brunch followed by a living room concert. Friends from all over LA were here -- kids banging on drums, men in leather and rubber smiling through the porch windows -- and the acoustics of the living room improved greatly by all those bodies.Sometimes I daydream that Terry Gross, host of NPR's "Fresh Air," is asking me how and why I began writing 26 loosely biographical songs about scientists, one for every letter of the alphabet. "Well, Terry," I reply as if we were old chums, "it was a bit of a songwriting stunt. The abecedarium, as the A to Z structure is called, has long ...
