New York's jazzy pop trio Dave's True Story dims the lights and darkens the grooves on their new CD "Nature," cleverly exploring the topics of love, sleeplessness and global ennui. Lyricist, guitarist Dave Cantor, jazzy chanteuse Kelly Flint, and produce
Dave's True Story: Kelly Flint (vocals); David Cantor (guitar, ukulele); Jeff Eyrich (bass instrument, background vocals). Additional personnel: Roger Bruno (accordion, shaker); Bernhard Ulrich (clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Randy Reinhart (trumpet); Steve Gluzband (flugelhorn); J. Walter Hawkes (trombone); Jon Dryden (piano, electric piano, organ); Bob Malone (electric piano); Tom Beckham, Lalo (vibraphone); Rich Zukor (drums, bongos, djembe, shaker, percussion); Richard Crooks (drums); Fred Walcott (bongos, percussion). On its fourth album and first release in three years, this trio further crystallizes its formula of cocktail jazz meets deceptively biting lyrics. The initial impression is that this sounds too much like elevator or dentist office music for anyone's good, yet the songs grab your ears after a few spins, helped enormously by producer Jeff Eyrich's tasteful mood and arrangements that add heft to the basic trio's stripped-down sound. Percussion, sax, vibes, organ, and even accordion are all utilized at various times to flesh out these tunes, making them throb with a full yet cushy glow. Vocalist Kelly Flint remains the focus with a Peggy Lee/k.d. lang-styled voice that makes these songs soar. There are echoes of Norah Jones and Sade, but this is jazzier than either and aims for a more shadowy fringe. The dichotomy of the gentle, easy listening melodies and David Cantor's edgy, often dark concepts is a brilliant stroke. It makes this music perfect for the lounge crowd, chatting while twirling their swizzle sticks, or for serious listening with the lyric sheet in hand. The richness of the sound of "A Dog's Life" nearly obscures ominous lines such as "No ounce of prevention will kill you like the cure, this dog's life is hard to endure," sung by Flint in an upbeat, burnished yet dreamy style. The musical/lyrical contradiction and floating melodies with subtle hooks produce wonderfully sharp and unique jazz. Nature shows Dave's True Story to be crafty innovators in a genre where there aren't many other musicians pushing the envelope. ~ Hal Horowitz New York jazz/pop cult heroes Dave's True Story both outlived and transcended the '90s lounge revival through the strength of both David Cantor's witty, urbane, and deceptively deep songwriting, and chanteuse Kelly Flint's bewitching, understated style. Their fourth album, NATURE, is their most polished to date and, ironically, their least jazzy, with Cantor moving toward a more pentatonic pop mode, with any swing-kitsch leanings definitively excised. In other words, it's a perfect entry-point into the rarefied delights of the band's sui generis aesthetic viewpoint.

| | Roky Erickson The Evil One CD (1984)
Nature
$10.59 Roky Erickson was very much a changed man when he re-emerged on the music scene in the late '70s after a deeply troubling stay in a mental institution following an arrest for drugs in 1969. The graceful but energetic proto-psychedelia of Erickson's music with the 13th Floor Elevators was replaced by a hot-wired straight-ahead rock sound which suggested an updated version of the teenaged garage pounders Roky recorded with his early group the Spades, and the charming psychobabble of Tommy Hall's lyrics with the Elevators gave way to twisted narratives documenting Roky's obsessive enthusiasm for cheezoid horror movies of the 1950s. It wasn't until 1980 that Erickson released his first solo album, and that disc has had a rather eventful history. Stu Cook (ex-Creedence Clearwater Revival) produced the sessions over a period of two years, and the album appeared in Europe as Roky Erickson & the Aliens (released by CBS in England, making it Roky's only major-label release to date), while in America it came out as The Evil One on the San Francisco indie 415 Records. The British and American releases featured different track lineups, and each version featured songs which didn't show up on the other; to complicate matters all the ...

Nature
$9.99 No Man includes: Robert Fripp, Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri (guitar); Lisa Gerard, Ian Carr, Mel Collins. Originally released on One Little Indian. No-Man (UK): Lisa Gerard, Tim Bowness (vocals); Steven Wilson (various instruments, strings); Robert Fripp (guitar); Ben Coleman (violin, strings); Mel Collins (flute, soprano saxophone); Ian Carr (trumpet); Silas Maitland (fretless bass); Chris Maitland (drums, drum, percussion); Steve Jansen (percussion); Richard Barbieri (electronics). Audio Mixer: Steven Wilson. Recording information: Beat Factory. Photographer: Douglas Brothers. Things were better honed for No-Man on Flowermouth, released a year after the band's debut. Minus Ben Coleman (although you'd never guess because he appears on seven of nine tracks), Tim Bowness and Steven Wilson were aided by Robert Fripp, Ian Carr, Steve Jansen, and Richard Barbieri (who recorded the excellent set Flame with Bowness in the same year). Beginning with the epic "Angel Gets Caught in the Beauty Trap," which is almost ten minutes on the original and longer on the reissue, things flow as Bowness' soothing vocal gives way to solos by Carr and Fripp. "You Grow More Beautiful" is another hit that might have been, while "Animal Ghost" is what Arthur Ransom, the author of Swallows and Amazons, might have sounded like had he chosen music instead of literature -- a very English affair with a meandering piano line (removed on the reissue) and flute solo. "Soft Shoulders" is the closest to a throwaway, but "Shell of a Fighter" restores order, an enthralling piece expanding to nearly eight minutes of lilting pastoral verse, quiet passages of electronics, and an all out storm of squally guitars and ferrocious drumming. "Teardrop Falls," one of their best, is a paced yet graceful pop dance tune. Flowermouth has serenity, too, in "Watching Over Me," which may have been better following "Shell." "Simple" uses a sample courtesy of Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, roaming through contemporary club beats to reach a haunting climax. "Things Change" is the endgame, with the lyrics "You're leaving me behind you, I hate the way things change" sung in earnest. Gentle again, giving way to Wilson's emotionally wrought guitar mimicking the gut wrenching agony of love lost. A masterpiece of writing and playing recommended beyond reason. ~ Kelvin Hayes Things were better honed for No-Man on Flowermouth, released ...
