This film was one of four Mary Pickford released in 1919 and the last she would make for a distributor other than her own. The film is a backwoods melodrama about land-grabbing in the mountains of Kentucky. This release features original music score by Maria Newman, liner notes by Daniel Eagan, and Pickford in the 1918 feature M'liss with a new score by Donald Sosin. Mary Pickford was the first internationally recognized Hollywood star, becoming America's golden girl and capturing hearts across the globe. She was also an astute businesswoman, founding United Artists with Charlie Chaplin and her husband Douglas Fairbanks, and eventually becoming the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. HEART O' THE HILLS was the last film she would make for a distributor not her own, and marked a movement away from the childlike roles she had become known for. Pickford stars as Mavis Hawn, an Appalachian girl from Kentucky whose world is invaded by a land-grabbing villain (Sam DeGrasse) from the city. Mavis vows revenge for the tragedy inflicted upon her family, and along the way she falls in love with Jason Honeycutt (Harold Goodwin). Adapted from the best-selling novel by John Fox, Jr., the film is an often brutal depiction of poverty, and a melodrama that achieved both critical and popular success, while extending Pickford's acting range considerably.

Heart O' The Hills DVD Heart o' the Hills was one of four films Mary Pickford released in 1919 and the last she would make for a distributor other than her own. It was a tumultuous year for Mary, who was running her own studio, forming United Artists and conducting a clandestine affair with Douglas Fairbanks. A backwoods melodrama about land-grabbing in the mountains of Kentucky, the film gave Mary the chance to extend her range from her previous half-dozen parts. For almost two years, audiences had seen her in a series of urban settings or in familiar roles from popular projects. Heart o' the Hills, with its often brutal subject matter and frank treatment of poverty, could hardly have been a greater change of pace from the lighthearted Daddy-Long-Legs. Mary had played characters like this before; the dramatic result, culminating in a memorable court trial sequence, would prove to be a dramatic and critical success.

Heart O' The Hills DVD
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played with a ...
