To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and as an excuse to play the compositions of the late great Thad Jones, a group of top jazz veterans was enlisted for this project. Michael Patterson arranged 11 of Jones' songs, adapting Thad's own arrangements, which were originally made for either combos or a big band, for the all-star octet. Each of the veteran musicians had an association with Thad Jones. Happily, they all sound in pretty good form, with the tenors of Benny Golson, James Moody, and Frank Wess battling it out on "One More." A tape of the late pianist Sir Roland Hanna is used during the first part of Jones' most famous original, "A Child Is Born." Jimmy Owens proves to be an excellent fill-in for Thad; this is one of his finest recordings. It is also fitting that Thad's older brother, Hank Jones, is on piano. The final number, Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Mood," is included because it was one of Thad Jones' favorite songs. All in all, this is a well-conceived and very musical tribute. ~ Scott Yanow

$7.09 Originally released in 2001, this EP marks the beginning of Ed Harcourt's solo career. The specter of Tom Waits looms very large (with a bizarre stop off at Bill Frissell's Ghost Town) on "I've Become Misguided"; there's even talk of "an old trombone" and "weird things happening ...

One More: Music Of Thad Jones songs
$13.15 "An artist's soul can be seen through their work", thus defining the music of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Chrissy Dzioba.Honing her skills around the Milwaukee music scene, Chrissy's music reaches out to listeners as a potpourri of folk, rock, pop, jazz, and maybe a touch of country. She is a pure and sensitive vocalist, and a passionate performer. This is proven through her latest CD album release, "Far From Dreaming", produced by Grammy Award Winner, and five-time Grammy Nominee, Joe Puerta, bassist of Bruce Hornsby and Ambrosia. Chrissy Dzioba (Joe-buh) began piano training and performance at the age of three, reading music before she could read words. Continuing her training on piano and later saxophone, guitar and voice surfaced to her abilities, being skills that came easily and from within. Though composing for as long as she can remember, it has been over the past eight years that she has made it a serious pastime. Her lyrics are direct, yet introspective, with melodies that can linger in your head for days. Her guitar also has style of her own, which is what helps separate her music from other performers. In 1999 Chrissy released a demo CD entitled In the Making, with the help of local artist and songwriter, Nick Venturella. One year later, with the energy of producer/bassist Joe Puerta, engineer Kevin Arndt, mastering engineer Trevor Sadler, and accomplished Milwaukee musicians such as Greg Koch, Mike Standal, Theo Merryweather, Brian Dale, Warren Wiegratz, John McWilliams, including a string quartet lead by Jared Snyder, the fully produced album, Far From Dreaming was released. The CD features ten songs penned by Chrissy Dzioba and one cover - a plaintive version of Leaving on a Jet Plane, a tribute John Denver, since it was the first song she sang live with an acoustic guitar for an audience of well over a thousand. This unbelievably diverse record contains a mixture of folk, pop, jazz, and blues, with instruments such as wailing guitars, ...
