Clark's My Love album was recorded in New York City, her first time working there, and the venue may have something to do with the superior sound and the differences between this and her prior albums. Clark's voice is in fine form throughout this part of her career, but her accompaniments on songs like "The Life and Soul of the Party" and "My Love" have a crispness, precision, and bite that transcend much of her other work. There are also some surprises, including some bluesy guitar on the break of the former and a drummer who's kicking the hell out of his kit on the latter (musician credits would've been nice). The album's fault lies, to some extent, in a degree of sameness between the songs -- Clark does try to vary her approach to the different numbers, but at some point there's a repetitive nature to her style and intonation, which only means that she wasn't primarily an album artist, at least not when she was doing albums made up virtually entirely of songs written (or co-written) by producer Tony Hatch, spiced with a Lennon-McCartney tune ("We Can Work It Out") or other outside work. Clark co-wrote several of the numbers here, and they're not vanity productions -- she was a competent composer. The 1999 Sequel Records remastering has helped the sound, and made the record work better, but there are still flaws, including a hopeless pop version of the Beatles' "Rain" (appended as a bonus track) and Clark's tendency to slide from edgy, rhythmic British beat sound into light pop music. ~ Bruce Eder

My Love: Petula Clark Sings the Sixties has an interesting concept as far as budget-line collections go. The ten songs featured include two of Clark's '60s hits ("A Sign of the Times" and "My Love") and then eight popular songs from the mid- to late-'60s. The tunes are pretty obvious selections and were no doubt used as filler on Clark's albums. She sounds pretty game whether tackling slow groovers like the Rascals' "Groovin'," up-tempo rockers like Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street" or treacly ballads like the Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere"." Game but not particularly interesting as the arrangements are pretty stock copies and her voice isn't always suited to the material. The two tracks composed by Tony Hatch expressly for her are head and shoulders above the covers. Hearing her storm through the punchy "Sign of the Times" or croon through the twisting chord changes of "My Love," you realize that she and Hatch had an almost perfect musical relationship. Better that you explore it on one of Clark's numerous greatest-hits package and give this fun but inessential disc a pass. ~ Tim Sendra

Even before reading the liner notes, the astute listener will note a striking similarity between the second album by British dream pop outfit Amusement Parks on Fire and a certain inscrutable Icelandic collective. As it happens, APOF's mainstay, Michael Feerick, recorded the majority of Out of the Angeles in Sigur Rós' own studio outside Reykjavik, mostly with that band's equipment. The sonic resemblance doesn't make the album a Sigur Rós tribute record, however, because Feerick is at heart a much more pop-oriented songwriter than his patrons. For all the slow-building majesty of epic tracks like the stunning "A Star Is Born" and the propulsive first single, "In Flight," Feerick also has a strong line in memorable melodies and catchy instrumental hooks, along with an appealingly earnest vocal style that's refreshingly free of the usual emo angst. In fact, the closest musical comparisons for this widescreen, richly detailed, and musically ambitious album are ...

Maggie Austin is a new artist whose vocals have won critical acclaim from both artists and music industry executives. Her 2006 accomplishments have earned her a New Music Weekly Best New Country Artist nomination and a listing of # 3 on Music Row Magazine's Top Country Breakout Artist List. This singer/songwriter's traditional country themes, combined with a cutting edge delivery, have made Maggie an innovative and ground breaking artist. Born in rural southeastern Pennsylvania, Maggie learned at a very early age both country values and her love of country music. The youngest of five children, Maggie spent many hours on the farm doing the two things she loves best: singing and being with horses! Like many young women today, Maggie had several dreams waiting to take flight. The morning after winning her first Equestrian U.S. National Championship, she knew it was time to begin the process of making her next dream a reality! Maggie took the plunge, walked into a recording studio, and came out with her six-song demo CD, Time and Again.Maggie wrote five of the six songs on Time and Again. Every artist has their own creative process; for Maggie, it's done while locked in the bathroom, as this space provides both a sparse environment and wonderful acoustics! Several of her tracks, including her international releases "Taking Time," "Touchdown" and "Time and Again," climbed various online charts. Country Stars Online says Maggie's songs "have a depth and emotion to them that sounds like they are from a much more seasoned songwriter." That depth and emotion carry over in to Maggie's 2006 release, Georgia Clay Road. Maggie wrote several of the tracks, but, this time around, also included songs written by some of today's best country songwriters. Maggie says she "wanted the songs on the CD to represent a journey: the journey of life - the good and ...
