| | Nedra Johnson Nedra CD Nedra Johnson Discography of CDs
Nedra Johnson in a singer/songwriter multi-instrumentalist born & living in New York City. Her unique style of guitar playing is unmistakably informed by her many years as a professional bassist and keeps her live solo acoustic performances more on an R&B tip then what one might expect of a "girl with a guitar." Nedra's self-titled sophomore release is a joyful mix of R&B, funk, rock and gospel. Honest in integrity to the music as well as the lyrical content, each song is a testimony of her experience as a black openly lesbian woman in love, spirituality, community and or politics. From the first song "Ahha (It's A Good Thing)" on through to the Maxine Feldman tribute version of "Amazon," this is proudly womyn's music and a great example of how Nedra has grown as a writer, arranger, producer and musician. Featuring lush background vocals and danceable grooves, Nedra makes the personal political and the erotic downright spiritual. Nedra has performed internationally at jazz, blues, pride & women's music festivals as a solo artist and a tuba player/vocalist with her father Howard Johnson & his group, Gravity. She surprised and impressed jazz audiences in Paris, Nime, Berlin, Vienna, Kassel, Macedonia, Muchen, Leverkusen, Los Angeles, New York & New Orleans when she put down her tuba and sang original songs with Gravity garnering such praises as from The Orange County Register, "A little thing [an original from the CD Testify ] called Working Hard for the Joneses had the crowd on its feet and whooping." As a soloist, she has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Cleveland, Madison, Chicago, New Caledonia and more! Whether in front of an intimate audience such as at New York City's Rockwood Music Hall or a large festival audience of 7000 like Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, Nedra has the ability to perform with both a strength and a vulnerability that makes each listener feel like they are getting to know her on a personal level. Her thoughtful choice of words reflect not only who she is, but speak to the heart in a way that mirrors emotions many find difficult to express, allowing her a fan base diverse in ethnic, cultural and spiritual background. SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE CD "NEDRA":This CD is independently produced and released on Nedra's own label Big Mouth Girl records. It features Nedra's father, multi-instrumentalist & jazz legend Howard Johnson, her brother David Johnson and very fierce openly lesbian rap artist God-Des. Below are some recent reviews... "Provocatively soulful... Like an acoustic incarnation of Big Mama Thorton and Ani DiFranco, in "Michfest Blues," Johnson sounds like a smiling maverick ready to push the envelope at any cost. Other songs combine funky baselines (think Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground") and a harmonizing synthesizer in the background leaving behind an early-'90s smooth jazz feel. Johnson has been known to perform the occasional Kurt Cobain cover. She bridges the feel of listening to old blues greats with cutting edge lyrics addressing social issues and what it's like to love the modern woman." - Jana Katz, Daily Collegian "If MeShell Ndegeocello is moving in a more jazz-oriented direction, then Johnson has the talent to pick up where she left off." - Gregg Shapiro, Bay Area Reporter "Nedra Johnson previewed songs from her forthcoming self-titled album on Big Mouth Girl Records. The good news is that her renditions on the disc capture the good-natured sexual and social spirit of her live performance and every song is a joy to behold." - Gregg Shapiro, Chicago Free Press "Nedra Johnson, blues and soul singer out of the Bronx has a red wine stained red velvet pillow for a voice. She's set deep; with rough cuts sung well." - Hanifah Walidah, Sucka For Life Check nedrajohnson for details! Nedra Johnson Nedra Songs | 1. | Ahha (It's a Good Thing) |

| | Catdaddy Jones Late Night In The Dog House CD (2003)
Nedra CD music
$12.85 Catdaddy Jones, a busman's holiday for four veteran New York sidemen, Geoff Worton, M.D. Meyer, Steve Merola, and Paul Bisbano, is a straight-ahead blues-rock band in a familiar style. The promotional sheet for their debut album, Late Night in the Doghouse, says, "Think the Asbury Jukes with a grittier singer and Jeff Beck on guitar!," and among the "key selling points" is this: "Record will appeal to fans of Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart, Memphis soul and urban blues." But these comparisons are not quite on the mark. In fact, if one were to listen to Late Night in the Doghouse without any information about the artists involved, it would be easy, at least the first time through, to suppose that the disc was some lost album by the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The roadhouse rhythms, screaming blues guitar, and, in particular, the powerful lead vocals all suggest the Texas band. True, there isn't any harmonica on the record, and there are some female backup vocals here and there, but fans of the Fab T-Birds are still going to feel right at home here. As is fitting for a band of pros, the music is cohesive and easygoing, and the songs, both the originals and covers like the Beatles' "I Call Your Name" and Manfred Mann's "Pretty Flamingo," are less important in themselves than as platforms for the playing and singing. Late Night in the Doghouse is the music of a band that would seem like a real find if you happened upon them at some club at the close of a long evening. On ...

| | Derek Trucks Already Free CD (2009) (Import) Japan
Nedra songs
$15.29 Derek Trucks started out as a young guitar prodigy playing alongside his uncle Butch in the Allman Brothers Band, but began following his own path in the late 1990s. ALREADY FREE is the result of a decade-plus spent sharpening his skills and growing his soul. It's probably his loosest, warmest, funkiest offering to date. While it's not markedly different from the Southern-tinged blues-rock of his earlier albums, ALREADY FREE nevertheless mines an altogether greasier groove. The album leans heavily on an old-school Southern soul aesthetic, and the spirit of both Memphis and Muscle Shoals can be heard in much of the material here, whether Trucks and company are adding some Southern grit to Bob Dylan's "Down in the Flood" or getting down the to the groove of one of their blues-rocking originals.

| | J J Cale Naturally CD (1971)
Nedra album
$8.15 NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the success and easy blues feel of Eric Clapton's cover of Cale's "After Midnight," NATURALLY goes even deeper into roots music, concocting a mixture of country, blues, and boogie that is full of downhome goodness while it drips with cool.
Cale's version of "After Midnight" is here, as is his loping "Call Me the Breeze" (later covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd), and the minimal blues "Crazy Mama" (a radio hit for Cale). The music is deceptively tricky--the surface textures pull you in like a porch swing, but the interlocking rhythmic base is full of subtle tugs and pulls that are far from standard-issue slow boogie. A sterling cast of players backs Cale, adding warm tones and light, in-the-cut rhythms. NATURALLY is a perfect introduction to the work of this influential cult figure.
Personnel: J.J. Cale (vocals, guitar, piano, drums); J.J. Cale; Dianne Davidson (vocals, background vocals); Chuck Browning (guitar, drums); Buddy Spicher (violin, fiddle); Buddy Spiker (fiddle); Ed Colis, Ed Colis (harmonica); Norman Ray (saxophone); Bob ...
| | Dolly Parton Trio CD (1987)
Nedra CD music
$9.35 A classic modern country album, THE TRIO is as pretty as music gets. The ethereal harmony vocals of three of popular music's sweetest swingers, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, would be enough--their harmonies couldn't have been closer if they were triplets. But THE TRIO offers something more, gathering songs that not only utilize their natural singing talents but also bring out the emotional timbre of their collective voice.
From the ultra-pretty Phil Spector pop classic "To Know Him Is To Love Him" to the hard-country Jimmie Rodgers song "Hobo's Meditation" and the high-lonesome "Memories Of You," THE TRIO brims with musicality. There are several ...

Nedra songs
$23.65 Digipak reissue of the ex-Rolling Stones bassist's fourth album with The Rhythm Kings, originally issued in 2001. Repertoire. 2005.
On 2001's Double Bill, Bill Wyman uses two well-packed discs to prove again what he had always previously managed to make clear on a single LP: He's a monster bass player and a mediocre (at best) singer who relies on his many famous friends to help him out. The friends this time range from George Harrison (who adds slide guitar to the somnambulant blues "Love Letters") to vocal jazz legend Keely Smith, tragically underused on too few backing vocal parts. The 24 tracks on Double Bill sound like the work of a perfectly competent ...
