5 stars Outstanding story line and supurb acting!
East of Eden has a compelling story line that is adroitly brought to life by the three main stars. James Dean was excellent. The additional feature clips of his background were fascinating. Being unable to find this movie anywhere for such a long time, I savored every minute of each scene. It was worth the wait to finally be able to see East of Eden again.

oh James Dean is so cute in this movie and this movie is wondeful better then rebel without a cause way better i bought the dvd and watched it and its great real great the year is 1954 may be an old movie but i like old movies

5 stars Literature to film at its best
The Steinbeck novel is brought vividly to life by a superb and clearly inspired cast headed by James Dean. Dean's impassioned representation of disaffected youth is both timeless and a hard-to-surpass standard. Jo Van Fleet, Raymond Massey, Burl Ives, and Julie Harris are equally adept in their respective roles. Doubtless, the direction by Elia Kazan must be credited for the overall success of the film, including the effective use of CinemaScope, now happily represented on DVD.

Based on John Steinbeck's novel and directed by Elia Kazan, East of Eden is the first of three major films that make up James Dean's movie legacy. The 24-year-old idol-to-be plays Cal, a wayward Salinas Valley youth who vies for the affection of his hardened father (Raymond Massey) with his favored brother Aron (Richard Davalos). Playing off the haunting sensitivity of Julie Harris, Dean's performance earned one of the film's four Academy Award nominations. Among the movie's stellar performances, Jo Van Fleet won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.

GOOD THEIF: Irish director Neil Jordan (THE CRYING GAME, MICHAEL COLLINS) and veteran actor Nick Nolte combine their talents for this breezy heist picture. Bob (Nolte) is a retired master thief and gambler living as an expatriot in France. His past robberies are the stuff of underworld legend, but he's given it all up, and fallen into a twilight life of heroin addiction and seedy gambling dens. Then a chance encounter with an attractive young runaway (Nutsa Kukhianidze) inspires him to clean up his act and take one last big job; an elaborate modern art heist at a swanky Riviera casino. Standing in his way is a cagey police inspector (Tchéky Karyo) who is determined to bring him down, even though the two are longtime friends. The twisty caper plotting compliments a fun cast (including Emir Kusturica and Gérard Darmon as two of Bob's brothers in crime), clever dialogue, stylish direction, and pretty Riviera scenery.
