Personnel: Russ Johnson (trumpet); John O'Gallagher (alto saxophone); Kermit Driscoll (double bass); Mark Ferber (drums, percussion).
A member of the collective the Other Quartet, trumpeter Russ Johnson delivers an impressive debut as a leader with Save Big. He puts together a sympathetic and dedicated team that achieves a focused effort. The opening "Saguache" sets the tone with its unpretentious melody, which slowly builds intensity to reach an exhilarating climax. After such a brilliant introduction, the band doesn't lose any steam, executing quality material with a remarkable consistency. The musicians never rush, but avoid sounding static. Both the compositions and improvisations are carefully structured and articulated, and although they nod to tradition, they share a progressive spirit. While some cuts include Eastern sonorities, they all follow an unpredictable path and show a real sense of purpose. Johnson is a thoughtful player who can produce a large range of tones and textures through his masterful use of mutes. He has found a perfect foil in alto sax John O'Gallagher, whose versatility is a definite asset. The rhythm section features the ubiquitous Kermit Driscoll on bass and the lesser-known Mark Ferber on drums. They play with a welcome economy of notes, apply all the right touches, and place adequate punctuation. All those qualities make for a promising debut by a musician to keep under close watch. ~ Alain DrouotDown Beat (p.76) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[C]ontemporary in sound with its smart attitude."
JazzTimes (p.102) - "It is both challenging and instantly likable. The album delivers on the implicit promise of economy in its title by a clean, intelligent, uncluttered, no-nonsense approach to freebop."

Kind Of A Drag
Buckinghams Kind Of A Drag CD  (1998)

Save Big
CD $11.95  4.2 stars Audio Samples
Reissue of the Chicago-based group's debut album, originallyreleased in 1967. Contains all of the original tracks in stereo, including the smash title hit, plus two bonus tracks: the single-only side 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' and the Buckingham's lengthy fuzz-fest, rave-up version of 'I'm A Man'. 14 tracks total. 1998 Sundazed release. Audio Mixer: Bob Irwin.
Photographer: Steve Besch.
Given its source, Kind of a Drag was one of the most extraordinary albums of the 1960s. One expected great, diverse LPs out of the likes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, among others; by contrast, even the better albums by top garage-punk outfits such as the 13th Floor Elevators generally had a one-note feel to them, or were conspicuously strong in one direction. So when a Chicago-based garage band (or were they a garage band?) like the Buckinghams, with one serious hit (the title track) to their name, put out a long-player that embraced soul, blues, garage punk, and English pop-rock with just about equal aplomb, it must have caught purchasers, radio programmers, and music writers alike off guard. Kind of a Drag isn't the kind of searing punk document that their Windy City rivals the Shadows of Knight presented with their two LPs -- the latter group's work stood next to the Buckinghams roughly where the Who's albums did next to those of the Beatles. The Buckinghams' lean, guitar-driven garage punk versions of "Sweets for My Sweet" (a cover of the Searchers' version, not the Drifters') and the Hollies' "I've Been Wrong" are juxtaposed with a horn-ornamented version of the Beatles' "I Call Your Name" -- on which the lead guitar is playing what sound almost like mandolin riffs; and all are sandwiched between the horn-driven "I'll Go Crazy" and the raw, bluesy "I'm a Man" (patterned ...

Practice Tape, Vol. 1
Bill Evans Practice Tape, Vol. 1 CD  (2000) Remastered

Save Big
CD $14.39  Audio Samples
20 never before heard solo piano practice recordings made by Bill Evans himself in his New York apartment at an unknown date; features originals, standards & interpretations of Bach compositions - the album was remastered with state-of-the-art gear, pres Solo performer: Bill Evans (piano).
Includes liner notes by Evan Evans.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
This unusual CD features two undated practice sessions by Bill Evans, which were taped on his reel-to-reel recorder at home, using a rather slow speed of 3.75" per second. Obviously, Evans wanted to work on his technique rather than record for commercial release, though it is odd that his upright piano seems in need of tuning. He is heard conversing with someone (possibly his wife Nenette Evans) on a number of the tracks, and many of the songs are fragments rather than complete takes. A number of Bill Evans works that are heard on this CD are unnamed or were never recorded by the pianist. It is fascinating listening to Evans rehearse originals that he obviously didn't need to practice, such as his "Walkin' Up" and his moving ballad "Turn Out the Stars," while he is noticeably still in the early stages of rehearsing "Fly Me to the Moon" (labeled as "The Moon") when he suddenly stops and segues into "Star Eyes" before reverting to his initial train of thought. His dedication to his classical roots is clear as he runs through several preludes by J. S. Bach and a segment from "The Art of Fugue." The closing medley is most unusual; it runs from Earl Zindars' "Mother of Earl" to his own "Fun Ride" to "Star Eyes" to "Short'n' Bread" to the pianist's "Only Child." In spite of the less-than-high-fidelity ...
