After a few electric projects, bassist Brian Bromberg decided to record a purely acoustic project. With such sidemen as pianists Mike Garson and Mitch Forman, brother Dave Bromberg on drums, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (on three songs), and tenors Ernie Watts (on five) and Doug Webb (on two), Bromberg holds his own with the fast company. Some of the selections on this CD are quite memorable, particularly Hubbard's "Dear John," Watts' interpretation of Wayne Shorter's "Yes or No," and the trumpeter's feature on "If I Should Lose You." Although the Nova label has since gone belly-up, this excellent CD might still be found and is certainly worth a search. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Brian Bromberg (double bass); Ernie Watts (saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet).

It's About Time: The Acoustic Project album
$10.89 Sure that Gregg Karukas had reached the point where his lighthearted approach to smooth jazz was instantly recognizable, the keyboardist titled his last Positive Music release, You'll Know It's Me. Though he adds dashes of hip blues textures and Crusaders-flavored twists with the Fender Rhodes (hence the title, Blue Touch), Karukas' debut is another typically high-spirited effort, a reminder as to why his albums are always perched for months in the upper reaches of the radio charts. For him, it's always about lilting, instantly memorable melodies and gentle funk. There's the spring in your step on the '70s soul-meet-'90s hip-hop of "Cruisin' Your House at Midnite" followed by the gentle piano graces of "Fly Away (Thinking of You)." He's always open to throwing in a few surprises, and on "Cruisin'," ...

| | Steve Turre Spirits Up Above CD (2004)
It's About Time: The Acoustic Project music CDs
$13.85 Trombonist Steve Turre pays tribute to his former employer, the remarkable multi-reedist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, on this sincere effort. Turre and an all-star group perform nine of Kirk's songs plus the trombonist's "One for Kirk." But although the music is certainly well played, one misses Rahsaan's miraculous innovations. It was logical getting James Carter for the date since Carter, ...

| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
It's About Time: The Acoustic Project album
$10.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute creates that smoky, late-night effect).
Kirk Whalum's silky tenor saxophone beautifully complements Patti Austin's soulful ...

It's About Time: The Acoustic Project songs
$13.69 "Lorin Hart comes from a long line of lawyers, fisherman, actors, painters, artillery captains, patriots, pioneers, soldiers, and runaways. Her handsome father collided briefly with her poetic mother in and around the great metropolitan theaters long enough to contribute to the arts their insightful, darkly brilliant,singer-songwriter siren, Lorin Hart." ( Chad wrote that) "She was born in Providence R.I. and raised in Greenwich Village and Greenwich,Connecticut (after an initial globe trot to the British Isles on her mothers hip where she bounced about by Brendan Behan and the like). She was educated in the finest schools, cut her musical teeth on her mother's opera, guitar playing boyfriends, the Newport Folk Festivals and Greenwich Village basket houses. She was delivered onto Northwestern University's campus right at the heart of the 60's, subsequently transferred to Haight Ashbury, immediately married a musician and had three of four kids traveling all the heck over everywhere in a hand painted (forest green) panel van earned doing a 'B' movie in Coconut Grove Florida (and that'sanother story). She clearly remembers bits of Cambridge Mass., Roanoke, Virginia, East Village New York, Fayetteville Arkansas and Stowe Massachusetts. She was finally dragged, kicking ...
| | Mersaidee Soules Honest CD (2007)
It's About Time: The Acoustic Project album
$18.99 Mersaidee Soules, originally from Picton, Ontario, Canada, got an early start on her career path--she's been singing since she was a little girl and writing songs from the time she became a teenager. So, it's only natural that she wrote the majority of the songs for her debut CD, Honest.Mersaidee notes that her songs are a reflection of her small-town experiences and family life. "Music has always affected me on such a deep level," she says. "So many songs have had such an impact on my life and that's really why I feel so drawn to not only sing but write aswell." After moving to Nashville in 2001 to pursue her dream, Mersaidee landed her first cut in Canada by a Major label artist and the single had an immediate impact and soon aired on two popular TV shows, Dawson's Creek and Crime & Punishment. Three years later, Mersaidee won the overall Grand Prize in the US Mid-Atlantic Song Contest and flew to Washington, DC to perform her original tune "You Knew." The song won first place in the Country Music division andlater finished first overall for every genre ...
