In the U.S. as well as Europe, so many Billie Holiday collections have been available on CD that if you're exploring her music for the first time, it's hard to know where to begin. Assembled by Stardust in 2000, this two-CD set isn't recommended to beginners or novices. Anthology: 1944-1959 does contain some of Lady Day's important Decca recordings of the 1940s, including "Lover Man" from 1944, "Don't Explain" from 1945, and her heartbreaking 1948 version of "My Man." But most of the other material falls short of essential; in fact, the 1958 and 1959 recordings that Stardust provides underscore her decline as a vocalist and will only be of interest to completists. Spanning 15 years, this collection shows us how much her voice declined over the years. The Decca recordings of the 1940s find Holiday in peak form, and she is in generally decent form on 11 live performances that were recorded at Boston's famous Storyville in 1951. But Holiday's voice deteriorated rapidly in the 1950s, and she doesn't have much of a voice left on various performances from 1958 and 1959 (including four songs that were recorded at Storyville on April 20, 1959, less than three months before her death on July 17 of that year). Holiday was in her early forties in 1958-1959, but her voice was in such rough shape that she sounded like could have been 35 years older. Though the late-'50s material isn't without historic value, it won't appeal to casual listeners, who would be much better off with collections of the essential recordings that Holiday provided for Columbia in the 1930s and early '40s, Commodore in 1939 and 1944, and Decca in the 1940s. Anthology: 1944-1959 is only recommended to collectors and serious jazz historians. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Duke Ellington Piano In The Background CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
Anthology album
$7.99 At first glance, one might think that this album is another in a long line of standard-issue Duke Ellington compilations. However, this is a release created by the artist himself, and it presents sessions from May and June of 1960 with one of the best orchestras Ellington ever assembled. (Only the previously unissued "Harlem Air Shaft," one of five bonus tracks on the CD, was recorded in '61.)
The title of this collection is also something of a misnomer, since PIANO IN THE BACKGROUND prominently features the piano throughout. Each track boasts fabulous bluesy piano introductions, and, at the end of each tune, the ivories usually get the last word. This dramatic conclusion sometimes comes in the form of a final blow to the lower register of the keyboard, as on "Mid-Riff," "Main Stem," and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)." These mysterioso rumblings of the piano make the tunes end with a kind of musical defiance not normally associated with jazz orchestras of the time. This is hard-swinging and inspired big-band music at its finest.
PIANO IN THE FOREGROUND, recorded in the late 1950s and early '60s, features the legendary Duke Ellington in a rare trio setting. Oddly enough, it wasn't often that Ellington blatantly promoted his skills as a pianist; his instrument was the orchestra itself. But in addition to his achievements as a composer, arranger, and bandleader, Ellington was also an undeniably gifted piano player whose approach to the instrument was both technically remarkable and unique.
Ellington's pianistic style may seem anachronistic by today's standards; he never embraced the advanced harmonies of bebop and always maintained his stride roots. Yet somehow he still sounds thoroughly modern on PIANO IN THE FOREGROUND. Perhaps it is his highly rhythmic ...

Frederick "Toots" Hibbert is believed by many to have been the first to coin the word REGGAE with the release of his early 60's hit "Do The Reggay." With over thirty-five years of performing under his belt, Toots has been dubbed the Godfather of Ska, and the appropriately titled 1998 release SKA FATHER shows him keeping right in step. As one would expect, the record is dominated by a bright uptempo pace and the characteristic sound of ska: accelerated, jerky guitar ...
