Kermit Ruffins had a reunion with the Rebirth Brass Band for this 2005 release. Ruffins dominates the music to an extent, contributing the majority of the selections, usually taking a vocal and adding a few spectacular trumpet solos. His good-humored description on "What Is New Orleans, Pt. 2" now sounds nostalgic and a bit wistful since this was recorded right before Hurricane Katrina, and it unintentionally describes what is lost and will hopefully return someday. The Rebirth Brass Band are in fine form, particularly the mighty tuba playing of Philip Frazier. Most of the performances are celebratory and perfect party music (other than the annoying closing rap "Up in tha Hood"), soulful yet tied to the brass band tradition while still looking ahead. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

JazzTimes (pp.127-128) - "Many of the songs are built on blues riffs or vamps, and when these guys start blowing, it's hard to sit passively..." "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert ...

| | Kath Bloom Terror CD (2008)
Throwback CD music
$14.29 Folk singer/songwriter Kath Bloom has a small cult following from the half-dozen LPs, all pressed in small quantities, she issued from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s with guitarist Loren MazzaCane Connors. Terror is the second album she issued after returning to recording after a gap of about a couple decades. Bloom's older records were rather eccentric folk efforts, owing both to her shaky if endearing vocals, her precious heartfelt songs, and the minimal lo-fi aura of the production. Not much has changed on Terror, except the production isn't as lo-fi, the arrangements are fuller, and the overall execution, while still on the gentle side, doesn't have as much of a hushed, ...
