Purchase Electric Ascension CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Arthur Blythe Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Electric Ascension album
$14.29 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute and tuba add to the sonic palette here, along with guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer and drummer Jack DeJohnette). Blythe also knows how to keep things groovy, as the Latin-infused "Down San Diego Way" shows, with its interlocking webs of percussion. This is challenging, engaging jazz of the first order that still sounds fresh decades after its release.

| | John Zorn 50th Birthday Celebration, Vol. 4 CD (2004)
Electric Ascension CD music
$13.09 Recorded during a string of concerts staged to commemorate John Zorn's 50th birthday, ELECTRIC MASADA captures the plugged-in variation of Zorn's acoustic, avant-Klezmer jazz quartet. Regular members Dave Douglas (trumpet) and Greg Cohen (bass) are absent here, with bassist Trevor Dunn admirably filling Cohen's position. Zorn's alternately lyrical and aggressive alto saxophone playing is still front and center, as are Joey Baron's dazzlingly polyrhythmic drum patterns. Rounding out the ensemble are guitarist Marc Ribot, keyboardist Jamie Saft, percussionists Kenny Wollesen and Cyro Baptista, and Ikue Mori on laptop electronics.
As one might guess from the personnel and instrumentation, the music here is dense, highly rhythmic, experimental, and often chaotic. The nearly 15-minute "Tekufah" is a cerebral, funky brew that recalls Miles Davis's early-1970s period (circa LIVE EVIL), with Saft's Rhodes creating a busy, cool counterbalance to Ribot's screaming guitar and the webs of thundering drums. "Idalah-Abal" leads off with a punishing death-metal riff that gives way to a rising tide of noise led by Zorn's screeching alto. Elsewhere, the jagged, fragmentary skronk of "Hath-Arob" contrasts with the quietly shimmering dream of "Yatzar," proving Zorn's penchant for endless surprises in the service of his bold, heroic music.
This is part of Tzadik's Birthday Celebration Series.

| | Dave Douglas Bow River Falls CD (2004)
Electric Ascension music CDs
$14.55 A true collaborative effort, BOW RIVER FALLS features playing, composing, and arranging by trumpeter Dave Douglas, clarinetist Louis Sclavis, cellist Peggy Lee, and drummer/programmer Dylan Van Der Schyff. Recorded during Douglas's residence at the Banff Jazz Workshop in Alberta, Canada (where the other musicians were guest faculty), the session was cut in an afternoon with minimal rehearsal, so a feeling of spontaneity prevails. The music, atmospheric and free, is full of vigorous instrumental interplay and expressionist gestures.
The opener, Steve Lacy's "Blinks," has a bop-influenced head that gives way to a chorus of anthropomorphic squeals and bleeps. This pattern is seen elsewhere--melodic fragments intertwine with open, spacious structures, punctuated by free, interactive playing. Lee's cello contributes to the chamber-music ambience, especially on darker, dramatic numbers ("Retracing 2"), while Van Der Schyff's laptop contributions (on "Window" and "Dark Water," in particular) organically blend sampled sounds with his own drumming. Like many of Douglas's recordings, BOW RIVER FALLS draws from the past (the clearest reference here is late-'60s free jazz), while sounding utterly contemporary (the glitchy, sampled backdrop might classify some tracks as electronica or post-rock). Like most of Douglas's releases, this one is excellent all around.

| | John Zorn Masada - Live At Tonic 1999 DVD (2004)
Electric Ascension songs
$24.45 The world of modern jazz would be a very different beast if it weren't for the emergence of John Zorn in the 1970s. Unafraid to incorporate a diverse range of styles into his music, Zorn had drawn on heavy metal, punk, classical, and a number of other influences to help drag the genre away from its traditional leanings. Masada are one of his many groups, with a line up completed by Greg Cohen, Dave Douglas, and Joey Baron. This show features Zorn and Masada performing in their native New York City, at a regular haunt for the band, Tonic, on the Lower East Side. The concert was filmed in the summer of 1999, and sees the band performing with their usual enthusiasm, excitement, and ambition to push the boundaries of music back further than many of their contemporaries.

| | David S Ware Live In The World CDs (2005)
Electric Ascension album
$21.49 A longtime frontrunner in the jazz avant-garde, saxophonist David S. Ware has released one of his strongest and most comprehensive statements with 2005's LIVE IN THE WORLD. A sprawling three-CD set, this collection of performances recorded in Italy in Switzerland features Ware playing with regular sidemen Matthew Shipp (piano) and William Parker (bass), two of the finest musicians in the game. Different drummers dominate each set--Susie Ibarra on Disc One, Hamid Drake on Disc Two, and Guillermo E. Brown on Disc Three--in each case providing pulse, texture, clatter, and drive to the tireless exploration and scintillating chemistry of the core trio.
The material includes covers (an extended, abstract reading of "The Way We Were") and originals that range in feel from the quietly meditative ("Aquarian Sound") to the kinetic ("Logistic") to the rhythmic and ruminative ("Elder's Path"). Disc Three is primarily devoted to a complete re-working of Sonny Rollins's "Freedom Suite;" Ware's version expands and explores the original to spectacular effect. At the center of all this, of course, is Ware's tenor work--passionate, nuanced, relentlessly inventive, and technically formidable. LIVE IN THE WORLD is not only one of Ware's finest recordings, it is an example of free jazz at its absolute best.
Personnel: David S. Ware (saxophone); Matthew Shipp (piano); Guillermo E. Brown, Hamid Drake, Susie Ibarra (drums).

| | Ornette Coleman Sound Grammar CD (2006)
Electric Ascension CD music
$15.39 Recorded in front of a live audience, 2006's SOUND GRAMMAR was the first release of all new material from free-jazz icon Ornette Coleman in nearly a decade. Packed with sonic thrills from back to front, this outing finds Coleman in a quartet that features two bassists. The rhythmic and harmonic interplay between the two basses (one is plucked and one is bowed) creates a rich, resonant field on which the drummer and Coleman (on violin, trumpet, and alto saxophone, alternately) improvise freely. The years haven't dimmed the artist's creativity an iota, and SOUND GRAMMAR proves Coleman's unique, original vision to be as vital as ever.
Personnel: Ornette Coleman (violin, alto saxophone, trumpet); Greg Cohen, Tony Falanga (double bass); Denardo Coleman (drums).

The emphasis is on ballads and his treatments of these songs (which include three religious pieces) are respectful, melodic and lightly swinging. There is not much variety here but the music (within its limitations) is enjoyable. ~ Scott Yanow
