| | DJ Sneak House Of Om CD DJ Sneak Discography of CDs
The acid test (as it were) for a house compilation is always how well it rewards listening on the part of someone who isn't dancing. DJ Sneak's contribution to the new House of OM series of compilations passes that test -- maybe not with flying colors, but it's a solid pass. Make no mistake: if all you need is good, serviceable dancefloor thumpa-thumpa, Sneak has got you covered and then some. His beats are clean and crisp, and he does an admirable job of working within the strictures of the genre to bring a relative variety of flavors to his sound. The long scat intro to DJ Spettro's "Family in Mind (Crack a Tempo Mix)" bodes ill for the remainder of the track, but it ends up being a bubbly riot of burbling bass and crunchy beats; the Lawnchair Generals' "The Truth (DJ Sneak Remix)" doesn't offer much beyond a simplistic rhythmic structure, but the Jason Hodges remix of "X [What You Want]" shows that with the right ingredients, it's possible to make quite a bit out of a minimal investment in musical elements (and that with the wrong lyrics, you can almost ruin the recipe). Elsewhere, jazz samples are used to brilliant effect on Roomsa's "November Jazz," and on the hypnotic track by Inland Knights called "This Belongs to You (Mike's Garage Mix)." Best of all is the album's closing track, a gloriously decadent, faintly Caribbean-sounding number called "Latin Trip" by one Chuck Daniels. A fine party disc. ~ Rick Anderson

House Of Om music CDs
$14.65 This is a pretty unusual release -- a two-disc album documenting two live DJ sets as performed on Valentine's Day weekend of 2004 by deep house legends Derrick Carter and Mark Farina. Each DJ's set is presented in unedited form on one of the two discs. Both programs are perfectly fine and either will rock the party thoroughly, but Carter's set is maybe the more consistently adventurous and interesting of the two, keeping the beats reliably solid and steady while imposing distortions and subtle syncopations that make the rhythms sound funkier than they really are -- note especially his artful treatment of Moodlex's "Just One Look [Jacob London Remix]" and his dub-inflected take on "Computer Madness" by Steve Poindexter. As for Farina, he too does a good job of creating a constantly shifting pastiche of textures and flavors within the basic house framework, though with perhaps a bit less sparkling creativity. He holds the jazz elements to a minimum on this set, focusing instead on Chicago-flavored fare like ...

House Of Om songs
$16.95 The percentage of sophisticated house music (or "deep" house) that is dire and samey is alarmingly high -- higher than most other forms of music. Thankfully, DJ Jazzy Jeff shows throughout the majority of this expansive two-disc mix that he's adept at picking some of the best of the lot. House heads who stay on top of new releases and refer to anything older than a few months as "old" or "played-out" might not be impressed, but time will show that this set is a vibrant reflection of house in the early 2000s. If you find no joy in Ron Trent's mix of Jody Watley's "Saturday," Osunlade's mix of Erro's "Rock Wit U Dub," the Chez mix ...
