(5 Customer Reviews)
VNV Nation has been essentially a vehicle for the songwriting of Ronan Harris since its inception in 1990; as of 2005, the group seems to be presenting itself as a duo -- the unidentified second person in the insert photo is probably producer Humate, who lends a special elegance to most of the tracks on this fine album. Elegance? Believe it or not, yes -- though Harris works well within the general stylistic boundaries of chilly EBM, his sound is unusually warm and at times downright pretty. "Arena" is one of the hookiest and most nakedly emotional songs ever to be released on the Metropolis label, while "Colours of Rain" is, as its title suggests, a gentle and impressionistic instrumental piece of subtle beauty. (Another instrumental piece, "Interceptor" is a bit less gentle and a bit less interesting, but still well worth a listen.) "Entropy" is unfortunately aptly titled and "Endless Skies" never really gets off the ground, and throughout the album the lyrics are generally of the type that sound good to people who think they understand English idioms better than they actually do ("Throw away the mantle/Awake from your uncertain hesitation," etc.), but Harris deserves credit for bringing a rare level of subtlety and human warmth to a genre whose artists all too often fall back on easy clichés and facile, manufactured outrage. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Weak beats, insignificant lyrics, not worth buying. Stick with FuturePerfect and hope for a better follow-up than Matter+Form Submitted by salmacis78 (Quebec, Qc, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Par for the course... "More of the same" is the best way I can describe this album. The tradmark synths and vocals are there (I'll always love his ballands) and the slammin' instrumentals as well. However, no barriers were harmed during the making of this CD. Previous releases had far greater impact on the genre. Submitted by radmobile (Yakima, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Heaven forbid... ...people should make music to, I dunno, make *music*. I mean really, "too many instrumentals"? Yeah. I enjoy lyrics too, but I also recognize the value of music on it's own.
That said, This definately does come off in a different tone than past albums, perhaps a bit weaker, but it certianly isn't due to lack of lyrics. Submitted by u9oc3in02 (Wesemania, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Very good but... probably expectations had been set way up too high, at least in my case. Too many instrumentals and I think one of their biggest assets is Ronan Harris' voice. What I don't agree with is that they have done the same album again, these guys manage to sound diferent in each album, this time more organic. Matter+Form
$8.99 The Wu-Tang saga continues. Raekwon "The Chef" is already an irreplacable part of rap music's largest breed, the Wu-Tang Clan, but his debut proves him also capable of standing on his own two feet. On ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX..., Raekwon's street-tough lyrics spotlight the roughness of his everyday life and, combined with short story interludes, shape the plot for this gangster movie of an album.
The topics on CUBAN LINX are all Chef-centered braggadocio, and the beats constantly reflect the hip-hop underground. Raekwon defines the politics of the rap game on "Incarcerated Scarfaces," and invites any non-believers to test his skills. Joining Raekwon on just about every cut, fellow Clan-man Ghost Face Killer gives a great solo effort on "Wisdom ...

$8.29 "When you look at me long enough/I start to read your thoughts/If your signal was strong enough/And then I call your bluff." Those words, along with the rest of Canibus' verse on the LL Cool J posse cut "4-3-2-1," sparked an intense battle between Canibus and LL. That battle led to Canibus' "2nd Round Knockout," a song directed at LL which not only dissed LL severely, but also showcased Canibus' incredible rhyming talent. Since then, the MC's debut album was highly anticipated.
His three-dimensional rhyme style gained ...
