A revised and expanded version of the original Synergy retrospective from 1984, Semi-Conductor, Release 2 includes over two hours of synthesizer works recorded between 1975 and 1986. The music is some of the most evocative and intriguing to come from the '70s synthesizer boom, including potential novelty tracks -- like covers of "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" and "Classical Gas" -- that are barely recognizable after Fast focuses on his fast-moving, polyphonic arrangements that use a variety of modules by Moog, Oberheim and Prophet. The Synergy sound remained surprisingly unchanged into the '80s, though the addition of a standard drumkit on tracks from 1979's Games. Though it may be difficult for listeners to separate the music of Synergy from the synthesizer excesses of contemporary prog-rock ensembles, Semi-Conductor includes a host of important electronic recordings. ~ John Bush
"Semiconductor," originally released in 1984, is a compilation and Synergy's work spread across a double CD and provides an excellent primer to the work of this artist who has been at the cutting edge of keyboard and synthesizer led rock music for almost thirty years. The album has been newly remastered for release and also contains two previously unreleased tracks, "Launch At Dawn" and "To The Edge And Back." The album also contains notes by Larry Fast.
Recorded between 1975 & 1986. Includes liner notes by Larry Fast.
Digitally remastered by Larry Fast.
Synergy: Larry Fast.

| | Gary Jules Greetings From The Side CD (1998)
Semi-Conductor, Release 2 songs
$8.79 GREETINGS FROM THE SIDE reissues the 1998 debut by rock singer/songwriter Gary Jules.
Greetings From the Side marked the emergence of a remarkable songwriting talent. Gary Jules arrived on this debut fully formed, an insightful lyricist whose words were accompanied by some of the most sad-eyed, exquisite melodies to come out of the decade. In that respect, the album sporadically recalls the finest soft rockers of the early '70s -- no surprise there, since Jules was raised on the era's AM radio staples. He particularly shares a kinship with Paul Simon. Like Simon, Jules has a knack for drawing out the smallest but most compellingly human aspects of his subjects in sketches of uncanny clarity, whether they are complex third-person narratives ("Barstool," "Jeremiah Weed") or introspective examinations. Both artists also write songs with hushed, pensive exteriors that, nevertheless, often belie heart-shattering and hard-learned truths. But these songs unquestionably arise out of a tougher, more cynical age. Jules' soulful, soft-gravel vocals provide his musings with an almost wounded depth. Many of Greetings' songs are lived-in, even scarred, but haven't given up on finding happiness despite all the evidence to the contrary. A displaced, restless mood runs through the music like a thread, an attribute the artist shares with the Counting Crows, which he recalls on "Bluefish" and the beautifully ruminative "Heroes & Heroin." The songs capture individuals who want to change, or at least find something to hold onto. And even when they betray romantic yearnings, they are romantic in the most unflinchingly honest way. Semi-Conductor, Release 2 CD music
$10.69 Phil May & The Fallen Angels include: Phil May (vocals); Bill Lovelady (guitar); Mickey Finn, Wally Allen, Brian Johnston, Chico Greenwood, John Povey, Fran Byrne, Ed Deane.
What a mess! It's kind of glorious, but it's a wreck. The Fallen Angels were a legendary never-were band of British former rock icons. The majority of this album was recorded with former Humble Pie guitar picker Mickey Finn (not the T. Rex drummer), teamed with Greg Ridley from Spooky Tooth, Twink Adler from the Pretty Things, and former Fleetwood Mac rhythm guitarist Bob Weston. The lineup was changed almost immediately and after many recruitments and falloffs, a lineup fronted by Finn -- now including vocalist Phil May of Pretty Things fame (the band was on hiatus at the time) -- went to Geneva to record an album. After six weeks in Switzerland that were ruled by rock & roll-styled excess, the Fallen Angels had recorded only eight songs -- none of which were finished. Upon returning to the U.K., everybody quit but May. He recruited some more players and eventually finished the album with overdubs and new songs. Once done, May toured a bit and hung it up by reconvening the Pretty Things, at which time Finn re-formed the band and recorded three more songs. The original album was only issued in Holland, and is thoroughly unmemorable, sounding like a cross between the Eagles jamming with Humble Pie and the Black Crowes. It's just icky, garage-y British blues-style rock, and being recorded in 1976 was already four years past its prime. Even the Faces had already moved on. In retrospect, it sucks, but in a charming, unfocused, drunken way. Standout tracks, if there are any, are "Fallen Angels," "California," "Cold Wind," "Dogs of War," and "Chance." ~ Thom Jurek

Semi-Conductor, Release 2 CD music
$12.69 HEADLESS HUMAN CLONESNamed after the latest advances in genetic engineering, the ever evolving rock group Headless Human Clones (HHC) formed one steamy summer night in a southeast Portland basement. Evidence examined to date indicates that a spontaneous chemical reaction ocured when two high school chums from New Jersey, songwriter Paolo Weatherbee and veteran blues guitarist Dave Hopkins, joined with West Coast drummer Mike Schmitt and the innovative genius of keyboardist Don Henson. The result was an exciting new rock combination which quickly escaped into the surrounding environment. With edgy, sarcastic lyrics set to upbeat pop tempos, blending sounds from surf to techno, this infectious foursome promptly proceeded to clone fans throughout the Northwest, one obscure venue at a time. As their sound spread, a cult following developed and Headless Human Clones have now been heard world wide from Europe to Australia. Their debut CD, Get In Line (2001), as well as their single release Bushbaby (2003), received international praise, with several cuts breaking the charts on mp3's most popular downloads nationwide.GET IN LINEGet In Line is something of a contradiction. It's enthusiastic, high energy sound is laced with lyrics of social satire and existential angst. The somewhat commercial, formulaic song structures are a vehicle for an experimental quirkiness ...
