The arduous three-year process of reuniting Candlemass' "classic" lineup had all the makings of a psychodrama: one where an innocent wedding-day jam incredibly led to sporadic live performances; then rather noncommittal songwriting sessions that progressed into the recording of actual demos; and after everything fell apart at the last minute due to the usual "irreconcilable differences," a just as unexpected about-face that allowed the album in question to suddenly emerge in 2005! In other words, unlike so many band reunions, which retrospectively seem to quickly transform from impossible to inevitable, this special occasion should not be taken for granted by any fan of the Swedish doom titans -- it was hardly guaranteed. Having clarified this, possibly the most surprising thing about this long-awaited comeback is that despite its eponymous simplicity and white-cover starkness, Candlemass aspires to far more than the mere rekindling of a very successful formula; it represents the work of a band intent on moving inexorably forward. Such a combustible mixture of nostalgic purity and novel vitality can be immediately felt in the astonishing, irresistible drive of opener "Black Dwarf," the familiarly descending melodic figures of the lumbering "Seven Silver Keys," and the hypnotically circling riffs and grandiose contrasting keyboards of "Assassin of the Light." Varying degrees of the known and unknown follow, and for every new stretch like the space-themed "Copernicus" or the atypically political "Born in a Tank," there are prototypical and fantastical Candlemass doom anthems like "Witches," "Spellbreaker," and the instrumental "The Man Who Fell From the Sky." Thankfully, there is but one of the latter, since, as every old-time Candlemass fan will attest, the sound they most anticipated hearing is of course the still incomparable golden wail of singer Messiah Marcolin. Even better, the portly frontman has lost none of his operatic range, and as shown by the suitably epic finale of "The Day and the Night," its unholy union with bassist Leif Edling's endless stores of Sabbathy riffs, Lars Johansson's inspired solos, and the rhythmic support of second guitarist Mats Bjorkman and drummer Jan Lindh still constitutes a perfect marriage. And so, given both the music herein and the human events that led to its unlikely creation, one's faith is restored: the power of Candlemass compels you! Candlemass Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews they're BAACKKK! More than just another reunion album, Candlemass' latest is a ROCKING doom laden affair and a most accomplished one at that. More up tempo than I expected but heavy as hell, "Candlemass" is a guitar dominated romp through hopelessness, despair, & the burning afterlife. Messiah is still in FINE form and there are no weak cuts on this. Of note is the 10th track not listed on the back nor is it included in the lyric sheet but even that one is a soul-burning avalanche of riff & bone. Mercyful Fate influences have crept in a bit perhaps displacing the early Angelwitch accents that permeated "Nightfall" but that withstanding, Candlemass is still a most gifted & relevant hope removal machine. This is not as seriously creepy as "13th From the Sun" but is the heaviest & most rocking release by this always intriguing band.

Candlemass are back After several years of hearing candlemass get worse and worse, the announcement of the "nightfall" line-up coming back was what everybody wanted, true most reunions fail and even I feared the worst but as soon as black dwarf started I new that the pioneers of doom metal are back. Simply put if you even slightly like heavy metal this is a must-buy album, and I dont see any other heavy metal album topping it this year. Submitted by Timothy (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Candlemass album
$13.89 Defcon 1: Lyrical Warfare was T-Rock's third album in five months. As you might be able to imagine, it's not that the MC had such a wealth of top-shelf tracks ready to be unleashed upon the world in rapid-fire succession. Instead, he had one good album, and he chose to split up the material from that one good album onto three separate albums, with plenty of nondescript fluff added to each of the discs to maximize his profit. Like Myth of Reality and Rock Solid/4:20 before it, Defcon 1 has a handful of memorable moments that maintain his status as an accomplished, if just above average, Southern MC. ~ Andy Kellman
| | Bruce Dickinson Tyranny Of Souls CD (2005)
Candlemass CD music
$9.99 It took eight years, but the trilogy that started with 1997's ACCIDENT OF BIRTH and continued with 1998's THE CHEMICAL WEDDING is finally complete with the release of 2005's TYRANNY OF SOULS. Dickinson once again collaborates with guitarist and producer Roy Z, with whom he has an almost telepathic relationship. That comes in handy when writing an album together while thousands of miles apart, Z at home in Los Angeles and Dickinson on tour with Iron Maiden. Working only with a tape of Z's guitar parts, Dickinson composed lyrics based on some of his favorite subjects: science fiction ("Soul Intruders"), space ("River of No Return"), and flying ("Kill Devil Hill").
TYRANNY OF SOULS is full of Z's signature layered guitars, as heavy as they are melodic and intricate. "Abduction" and "Soul Intruders" open with retro thrash riffs and feature blindingly fast solos. No Dickinson album would be complete without a history lesson, included here in "Kill Devil Hill," the story of the Wright Brothers' first flight. At the midpoint of the record, "Navigate the Seas of the Sun" revisits the subtle acoustic vibe of 1994's "Tears of the Dragon," the song that originally brought Z and Dickinson together.

| | Nevermore This Godless Endeavor CD (2005) Enhanced CD
Candlemass music CDs
$12.95 Nevermore's sixth album arrives bearing few surprises -- which, for a band less accomplished or too comfortable in their niche, would generally be seen as a negative attribute. Not here, as Seattle's finest mid-'00s heavy metal outfit (sorry Queensrÿche!) continue to set the bar for purist-leaning metal-heads on this side of the pond. As always, and not to take anything away from their cohorts (particularly drummer extraordinaire Van Williams), the soaring vocals of Warrel Dane and lead guitar heroics of Jeff Loomis act as twin beacons shining out from the band's gloriously metallic bulk. Furthermore, it's arguable if Dane (now almost completely divorced from his once too strident upper registers) has ever sounded quite this aggressive on any of Nevermore's earlier albums (witness his coarse roars on opener "Born (The Retribution of Spiritual Sickness)"). Likewise subject to discussion is whether Loomis hasn't topped his not inconsiderable prior achievements with his ever tasteful and inventive solos, here augmented by ex-Dragon Lord guitarist Steve Smyth -- quite a talent in his own right. Suffice to say that Dane and Loomis lead their troops in reliably inspired style throughout terrific cuts like "Final Product," "The Psalm of Lydia," and "A Future Uncertain" -- all of them carefully constructed songs, laced with just the right dosage of showy acrobatics so as to keep listeners' jaws sagging. They also retain a rare combination of immediacy and complexity, where one's premature feeling of having sussed out the album's every trick eventually gives way to an unexpectedly lengthy discovery period. Sure enough, the somewhat more straightforward classic metal of "My Acid Words," and "Bittersweet Feast," and the by-now-expected-semi-power-ballad "Sentient 6" are about as predictable as it gets; and the lone questionable inclusion of the minute-and-a-half "The Holocaust of Thought" is ultimately justified by its introductory status for the highly effective, evocative sl
| | Candlemass Nightfall CDs (1987) Remastered
Candlemass songs
$13.35 Swedish doom originators Candlemass gave birth to an instant classic with their debut, Epicus Doomicus Metalicus. But their 1987 follow-up Nightfall managed to break even more new ground by introducing the operatic bellowing of new vocalist Messiah Marcolin, whose religious lyrics found the perfect match in the slow, grinding power chords written by bassist Leif Edling. Perfect examples of this formula like "The Well of Souls," "Samarithan," and "Bewitched" would become live standards for years to come and are nicely held together by short instrumentals, including a rendition of Chopin's "Marche Funebre." And while the band can't resist thrashing out just a tad on parts of "At the Gallow's End" and "Dark Are the Veils of Death," this is still a cohesive work, and a must for Black Sabbath fans ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Candlemass: Messiah Marcolin (vocals); Mats Bjorkman, Lars Johansson (guitar); Leif Edling (bass guitar); Jan Lindh (drums).

| | Candlemass King Of The Grey Islands CD (2007)
Candlemass album
$13.69 After years of repeated break-ups and reformations Swedish doom lords Candlemass return once more with KING OF THE GREY ISLANDS. New vocalist Robert Lowe (also of Solitude Aeternus) worked virtually with Leffe Edling (founding member and principal songwriter) and company, tracking vocals in his home state of Texas. Despite the thousands of miles that now separate the band members, GREY ISLANDS continues in the doomy, melodic style fans have come to expect.
Here we go again. With Messiah Marcolin's second acrimonious exit from the band that made him famous (and he they, in turn), Candlemass' long-suffering fans must once again contend with conflicting allegiances and emotions regarding the ongoing legitimacy of one of doom metal's charter groups. Of course, most would argue that it has always been bassist and composer Leif Edling -- not Marcolin -- who embodies the essence of Candlemass, but that doesn't make it any easier for the vast majority of their supporters to live without the operatic spark injected by the twice-departed singer's imposing vocal (and physical) presence. But live without it they must, as the hallowed Swedes forge ahead in their career via their ninth studio album, 2007's King of the Grey Islands, by welcoming none other than Solitude Aeturnus frontman Robert Lowe into the fold. This, as any veteran doom enthusiast will know, is an intriguing choice to say the least, since Lowe's former band was frequently described as "America's answer to Candlemass," therefore only heightening curiosity as to how he'll fare -- especially since, for their part, Edling and his instrumental cohorts have delivered a selection of songs that's easily as strong and consistent as that of their most recent, eponymous effort with Messiah at the helm. Even so, it must be said that Lowe's exceptional pipes still come across like José Carreras as compared head-on to Marcolin's booming Pavarotti in terms of sheer, stupefying power, but Lowe's range as a stylist is arguably

| | Type O Negative Life Is Killing Me CD (2003)
Candlemass music CDs
$15.65 From the first, sludgy notes of the opening cut "Thir13teen," there's never a doubt that Type O Negative has kept the spirit of vintage Black Sabbath alive with their sixth album LIFE IS KILLING ME, even as Ozzy's been reduced to screaming televised profanities at his kids on MTV. Type O frontman Peter Steele continues to surprise and impress by taking the Sabbath influence and peppering it with various stylistic twists that find him turning a potentially stultifying genre like goth-metal inside out. Guests Paul Bento and Pandit Kinnar K. Seen contribute sitar and tabla respectively to the muscular "Less Than Zero," while Type O keyboardist Josh Silver injects the moody "(We Were) Electrocute" with the kind of synth lines that'll put smiles on nostalgic '80 goth fans everywhere. Any fears that this quartet of native New Yorkers has gone soft get dismissed amid the roiling riffage of the lumbering title cut, the Danzig-like "Nettie," and the equally despairing "Anesthesia." Going on their 14th year together, Type O Negative continues to blaze their own singular path in the worlds of heavy metal and hard rock.
Additional personnel includes: Paul Bento (guitar, sitar, tambura); Pandit Kinnar K. Seen (tabla).
Recorded at Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York.
Type O Negative: Peter Steele (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Josh Silver (keyboards, background vocals); Kenny Hickey (guitar, background vocals); Johnny Kelly (drums, background vocals).
| | Boris Akuma No Uta CD (2005)
Candlemass songs
$10.89 Playfully referencing the cover of Nick Drake's BRYTER LAYTER album, this Boris outing has absolutely nothing to do with the British folk singer's gentle, melancholy vibe. Instead it presents the Japanese rock act at full throttle, churning out raucous metal worthy of prime-era Motorhead (see "Ibitsu" and the fittingly titled "Furi"). AKUMA NO UTA isn't exclusively ferocious, however--it also makes room for moodier atmospheric moments, as on the sprawling "Naki Kyoku." Though Boris does dabble in more experimental recordings (see its work with Merbow), AKUMA NO UTA falls largely into the rock side of the group's aesthetic, and stands as one of its finest offerings.
