In blatant defiance of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous maxim about there being no second acts in American lives, that most quintessentially American of bands, Styx, enters a new phase here after three-and-a-half decades of life. When their one-off cover of the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" became a surprise hit, Styx followed up with an entire album of cover tunes, 2005's BIG BANG THEORY.
Here they lay bare their roots in both classic rock and Chicago blues (they are, after all, natives of the Windy City themselves). Tackling tunes by such 1960s rock icons as the Who ("I Can See for Miles"), Jimi Hendrix ("Manic Depression"), and, of course, the Fab Four (the aforementioned classic), they remain reverential. However, they take a few more liberties on the still-timely Willie Dixon composition "It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)" and the Sonny Boy Williamson-via-Allman Brothers chestnut "One Way Out." They venture furthest afield, though, on a reinvention of their own "Blue Collar Man" recorded at the former site of legendary Chicago blues label Chess Records, and featuring guest shots from blues icons Koko Taylor and Johnnie Johnson.

Why? I am as big a Styx fan as they come. I have a couple of problems with this cd. First is the song selection. Most of the songs are too close to the ones on Rush's "Feedback." Why not do something totally different like hair band songs or more rocking songs from other 80's bands like Nugent or ZZ Top. Second, while some of the covers are quite good, they don't sound like Styx. Very few of the songs were converted to have the trademark Styx sound. No, I'm not one of those that wants Dennis back. I think Gowan is great. I would have rather heard a cd full of originals. Submitted by tlash1 (Palmyra, IN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Boring. I expect any group of musicians who have been around as long as the present Styx line-up, to do covers as well as any other bar band. I would not expect them to waste studio time recording covers unless they think they have found something new in the songs. Styx apparently has not. The only thing interesting about this album is the cover of the Styx chestnut Blue Collar Man, which is different in feel and impact from the original. Otherwise, these versions basically are note for note recreations of the originals, which were done better by the original artists. Even I Am The Walrus, a tune that is rich with possibilities for alternative arrangements, is so carefully recreated, the band here even copies the voices in the background of the original recording. Contrast this with the version Spooky Tooth recorded back in the 70s. The versions do not even sound particularly like "Styx", which at least would have been something. At the end of the day, this album is a waste of time. 2 stars for at least playing the notes in the right place. Submitted by Dogboy (Durham, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Classics and classically rocked ! Styx covers Lovin Spoonful, a soulful rendition of Blue Collar Man, Tull, among some solid cover songs. Very fun, usual great guitars by JY and the electric Tommy Shaw, just gets better, also they surprise all with a great Procul Harum song ! Submitted by zmjk (Las Vegas NV) Was This Review Helpful?
