Dual Disc CD/DVD
Three Days Grace: Adam, Neil, Brad. Recorded at Longview Farm Studios, North Brookfield, Massachusetts; Bearsville Studios, Woodstock, New York; Vespa Studios and A Room Full Of Stuff Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Three Days Grace's self-titled debut showcases the simplicity of their music, which is both the band's biggest strength and biggest weakness. The album's taut arrangements and grinding but melodic sound are quintessential alt-metal, suggesting a much poppier, less cerebral Helmet (or among Three Days Grace's contemporaries, Chevelle), and while the production is mostly simple and crunchy, it occasionally delves into Linkin Park-like atmospheres. At its best, the band's focus and adherence to alt-metal's formulas -- coupled with tight songwriting and some unexpectedly pretty choruses -- results in a strong tracks that are more memorable than the work of many of their peers. "I Hate Everything About You" was Three Days Grace's big single and remains the band's best song, gaining most of its power from its directness and bluntness in examining a dysfunctional relationship. Though there's nothing else quite as strong on the rest of the album, "Born Like This," "Just Like You," and "Scared" are also good examples of the band's surprisingly hooky songwriting. However, when the songwriting isn't quite up to par, Three Days Grace's simplicity becomes more generic than focused. The cookie-cutter angst of song titles like "Burn," "Drown," and "Now or Never" and lyrics like "Home"'s "By the time you come home/I'm already stoned/I can hardly wait to leave this place" may tap into the feelings of the band's audience, but they're not especially distinctive. The album's second half falters a bit when compared to the punch of Three Days Grace's first few songs, although the power ballads "Take Me Under" and "Wake Up" show that the band is equally good at (somewhat) quieter songs as well as loud ones. Although this debut is a little uneven, it's also promising. Three Days Grace are definitely one of the most accessible alt-metal bands of the 2000s; they just need to add some more distinctiveness to their sound. ~ Heather Phares When it comes to heavy-metal lyrics, historically there have been but a few options. If one isn't inclined to go the ever popular, Iron Maiden-approved demons and wizards route, he or she is really only left with Kiss-style macho chest-pounding, or bleak alienation of the type perfected by Metallica. With its self-titled U.S. debut album, THREE DAYS GRACE manages to add a fourth option by combining ultra-stripped-down, de-tuned monster riffs in the very best Black Sabbath/Melvins tradition with emo-esque, heart-on-the-sleeve, diary-like poetry worthy of a Deep Elm Records release. In addition, these north-of-the-border boys add a snap-tight, chorus pedal-heavy production sheen that recalls the greatest of all Canadian hard-rock trios, Rush (particularly that band's excellent, but oft-overlooked, 1990s albums COUNTERPARTS and TEST FOR ECHO). By combining the best elements of metal and emo, two often-opposing genres, THREE DAYS GRACE breathe new life into both styles.

| | Dio Holy Diver CD (1983)
Three Days Grace
$5.99 Live Recording
Dio: Ronnie James Dio (vocals, keyboards); Vivian Campbell (guitar); Jimmy Bain (keyboards, bass); Vinny Appice (drums). Recorded at Sound City Studios, Los Angeles, California. After playing a major role in five positively classic heavy metal albums of the late '70s and early '80s (three with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and two with Black Sabbath), it seemed that singer Ronnie James Dio could truly do no wrong. So it wasn't all that surprising -- impressive, but not surprising -- when he struck gold yet again when launching his solo vehicle, Dio, via 1983's terrific Holy Diver album. Much like those two, hallowed Sabbath LPs, Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules, Holy Diver opened at full ...

| | Pantera Far Beyond Driven CD (1994)
Three Days Grace
$10.09 Live Recording
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrel (guitar); Rex (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. "I'm Broken" was nominated for Best Metal Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Personnel: Phil Anselmo (vocals); Diamond Darrell (guitar); Vinnie Paul (drums). Recording information: Nashville, TN. Far Beyond Driven may have been Pantera's fastest selling album upon release, but it's hardly their best. In fact, although it shot straight to the number one spot on the Billboard sales chart in its first week (arguably the most extreme album ever to do so), this incredible feat doesn't so much reflect its own qualities as those of its predecessor, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power. ...

| | Loudness Thunder In The East CD (1985)
Three Days Grace
$9.69 Loudness was a Japanese hard rock quartet that had numerous hit albums in the 80's and early 90's. Thunder In The East reached number 74 on the Billboard charts in 1985. Wounded Bird. 2003.
Loudness: Minoru Nihara (vocals); Akira Takasaki (guitar); Masayoshi Yamashita (bass); Munetaka Higuchi (drums). With 1985's Thunder in the East, Loudness were faced with the daunting challenge of conquering heavy metal fans outside their homeland of Japan for the first time. Knowing that their early sound might prove a tad too heavy and complex for American audiences, the foursome rose to the occasion by dispensing their most melodic compositions ever. ...

The fitting middle ground between L7's punky self-titled debut on Epitaph and its thunderous initial outing for Slash/Reprise, 1991's SMELL THE MAGIC finds the Los Angeles-based band fortunately situated at the Sub Pop label just in time for the grunge explosion. On this short, swift nine-track album, the women of L7 gleefully mix metal, punk, and classic rock, resulting in a ...
| | Massacra Enjoy The Violence CD (2005) Import
Three Days Grace
$17.45 Massacra substantiated the world-beating death/thrash credentials that were hinted at by 1990's Final Holocaust debut with their aptly named second album, 1991's Enjoy the Violence, which summarily grabbed that nasty sophomore slump fellow by the throat and beat him to bloody a pulp! Even though it barely deviated from its predecessor's template -- thrashy death metal laden with apocalyptic themes -- the album boasted a slightly cleaner production at the expense of only mere ounces of the group's precious sonic ferocity, all the while bolstering its makers' reputations as incredible musicians with the remarkable precision necessary to pull off their frantically challenging songs. Just listen as vocalist/bassist Pascal Jürgensen ...
| | Robert Rich Inner Landscapes CD (1985)
Three Days Grace
$13.15 Recorded live in 1985. The 74 minutes of music on Robert Rich's Inner Landscapes were culled and cut from over two hours of live concert material. The work that became Inner Landscapes, a 1999 Hypnos release, was taken from a live and wholly improvised set performed in 1985. With Inner Landscapes being released in 1999, there was a bit of a nostalgic feeling that allowed listeners to look back to where Rich came from and put in perspective his 14 years of work since this 1985 concert. This recording is full and diverse with its synth drones, flute sounds, and Rich's lap steel. It is a fine recording of recycled music, and one that is both complimentary and insightful. This is a must-have recording for fans of Robert Rich and any fan of early new age/space music circa the mid-'80s. ~ Matt Borghi INNER LANDSCAPES is one of Robert Rich's few live recordings to find its way onto CD. Set to tape in 1985, it came at a pivotal time in Rich's recording career, as it was one of the last recordings to emerge from the era of his "sleep concerts." Much like the expansive TRANCES/DRONES, INNER LANDSCAPES reaches into a similarly deep chasm for much of its sound design, which is full of great, cresting electronic drones, and synth programming tonally colored pitch-black. This is not dark music, per se, but its vast evocations recall the awesome emptiness of space. As his electronic wind systems gather strength and blow across a patina of chattering radio waves and galactic dust, Rich manages to draw you in, inviting you to explore, relate, contemplate, and ultimately succumb to the vastness.
(From review by Hans Stoeve) Inner Landscapes is unquestionably classic Robert Rich ambience. Here are changed time scales where one minute becomes ten. Rich's music is all about slowing down time, slowing down your mind as well as yourself. It's also about 'hearing' harmonies in new ways. Here are references to Indian, African and Indonesian musics. Electronics and drones merge with beautiful flute lines, aided with what Hassell might describe as coffee coloured textures, complete with insect like noises merging effortlessly and seamlessly. A wonderful sense of serenity pervades this recording. Originally recorded 1985, a year before he stopped his now legendary all night sleep concerts. Robert Rich, like Steve Roach, Jon Hassell, ...
