THIS IS CRUCIAL REGGAE's Peter Broggs installation collects 12 tracks from a Jamaican singer clearly devoted to a classic roots reggae style full of sinuous grooves and devout Rastafarian themes. Over edgy dread rhythms, bobbling bass lines, and guitar and keyboard accents, Broggs's bright tenor intones the values of exalting Jah ("Just Can't Stop Praising Jah"), maintaining a positive, conscious disposition ("Cool Down"), and smoking the sacred herb ("Leggo Mi Hand" and "International Farmer").
While not an innovator (his music falls firmly in the tradition of the Wailers and Burning Spear), Broggs sings with a conviction that sticks, and it is difficult to listen to songs like "Cheer Up" without feeling a sense of spiritual uplift. This is not to say that Broggs isn't compelling musically; all tracks on THIS IS CRUCIAL REGGAE are enjoyable, especially when they verge into dub territory (as on the spacious, echoing "Jah Jah Voice Is Calling"). Broggs was one of the few practitioners of old-school roots throughout the '80s and '90s, and this compilation does of a fine job of representing his cause.

Winston Rodney's (aka Burning Spear) first live waxing remains as righteous a live reggae disc you're ever gonna feast upon. Well, this recent live double shot is hardly its predecessor's equal, but Rodney is still one of the truly great voices in reggae. So even when the going gets rough, or boring, or meanders into Jah oblivion, he's still worth the price of admission. His new band (complete with all-female horn section) is a tightly skanking bunch of bohunks who negotiate the labyrinthine rhythmic pulsation with grace and panache.
