Those expecting a simple solo drummer showcase from the man who led both Yes and King Crimson into the deepest of topographic oceans should, upon listening to Bruford's independent exploits, be pleasantly surprised. ONE OF A KIND, album number two for the Bruford band, sows Bruford's wild jazz roots for once and all, peppered judiciously with numerous elements of his freewheeling prog rock past.
To accompany his nimble rhythmic travails, he assembled a crackerjack squad of supporting players. Together this quartet recorded the symphonic prog of "The Sahara of Snow," the electronic shabazz of "Hell's Bells," and the undeniably gorgeous fusion-bop of "The Abingdon Chasp." Rarely has an album title been so accurate.
Bill Bruford ended his brief affair with U.K. and condensed his original outfit to a quartet, releasing a second album of sinewy, celebratory jazz/rock fusion, One of a Kind. Good-humored twists and turns abound in the music, punctuated by Bruford's steadying if slightly subversive rhythms, Allan Holdsworth's flashes of fire, Jeff Berlin's insistent bass, and Dave Stewart's remarkably colorful keyboards. At the heart of many of these songs is an uplifting melody, a trait shared with fusion artists like Weather Report and Jean-Luc Ponty, though Bruford's outfit favors a faster pace than the former and pursues more musical avenues in a single song than the latter. When he takes to tuned percussion, Bruford can even sound like Frank Zappa (both bands have a funky side to them). Standout cuts this time include "Hell's Bells," "Fainting in Coils" (which, in an indirect link to his previous employers, would have felt at home on Robert Fripp's Exposure), "Five G," and "The Sahara of Snow." The remaining tracks are a little less muscular, and the band's strength would seem to lie in fusion propelled by the complex rhythmic patterns of Bruford and Berlin (i.e., when the band leans closer to the rock side of the fusion family). Those who enjoy their fusion with a healthy dose of rock will find One of a Kind a fair match for anything from Return to Forever or Brand X. Note that many of these songs also appear in live versions on the beat-the-boots release The Bruford Tapes. [This release of the album contains bonus material.] ~ Dave Connolly

| One Of A Kind Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Yes! It's one outstanding album. This amazing album by Bill Bruford shOws why the group, YES, has such a loyal following.
It is simply one of the best albums of the 'FUSION' genre. The talent is obvious. Bruford, Holdsworth, Berlin, Stewart create a tight ascending spiral into high-energy bliss. Improvisation and interplay rule, with musical coherence provided by Bruford's drumming providing flow and guidance. Berlin and Holdsworth appear to be constantly exchanging musical ideas, while Stewart holds the theme together while joining in on what must have been a load of fun.
Of the eight sterling cuts, I may favor 'The Abingdon Chasp', but only slightly. Every song not only stands on it's own, but deeply etches it's place in the album.
I must say that as an owner of the original vinyl, the CD kept true to the dynamics. This might be Studio work, but it sounds LIVE! If you have a premium stereo, it is worth an even closer listen for even greater enjoyment. Submitted by ezyernie (englewood, nj, us) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Essential Anything with Dave Stewart on it is going to be good and this doesn't fail. A great album. Check out the other two albums by this band too, they're just as good. Submitted by KevinB (Wimborne, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

One Of A Kind album
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD showcases the shifting line-ups and many moods of the early to mid-'80s Chills. "Rolling Moon" captures a mood of shambling joy, its simple, repeated keyboard riff sounding like a distant caravan crossing New Zealand's big-sky country. "Pink Frost" is undoubtedly one of the Chills' two or three finest songs, an eerie tale of finding one's lover ...

| | Killing Floor CD (1995) (Import) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak; Germany
One Of A Kind songs
$18.79 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in a heavy cardboard gatefold sleeve, and killer sound. This is a raw, immediate, overdriven, psychedelic blues record that offers an interesting historical counterpoint to the immediate impact of Page and Plant and Co., but it also offers a great contrast to the recent 1990s versions of American groups trying to rock up the blues in like style: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion immediately comes ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
One Of A Kind album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her adventures, bringing an important change of pace to that popular band's hits. The jacket looks like a dusty old family album-style book ...
| | Legend CD (2007) (Import) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak; Germany
One Of A Kind CD music
$18.75 In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is a clear indication that Jupp is a pub rocker, a guy who specializes in laid-back good times, so it shouldn't come as a great surprise that his first band, Legend, was proto-pub, an unabashed celebration of old-time rock & roll, filled with three-chord ...
