Born in Louisville, KY, Amoni Scarsayzie came to El Paso, TX at the age of nine. Amoni attributes his name to two major influences in his life, his seven-year-old son Kemoni (he is also a father to three-year-old twin sons Kamal and Kishaun) and the famous movie director Martin Scorsese. His first taste of hip-hop came as he listened to his neighbor play Public Enemy. It was then that Amoni realized that Hip-Hop was his calling. Listening to NAS, Mobb Deep, Rakim, Biz Markie and Digital Underground reinforced his passion. His high school years were filled with writing short stories and poems. After high school, Amoni began recording with a group called Mathematix, what was supposed to be El Paso's version of the Wu-Tang Clan. The group split up soon after claiming creative differences. He then teamed up with Mathematix producer Larry Overstreet where he got his first taste of the recording business, recording his first album Ghost In the Darkness. A virtual unknown at the time, the solo artist was left proud at having the opportunity to reveal his talent. Soon after this recording, Amoni was locked up for drug trafficking, spending the next year behind bars. Although he took advantage of the time by writing and reflecting, Amoni missed his children and friends.
