| | Avril Lavigne Under My Skin CD Avril Lavigne Discography of CDs
While Avril Lavigne's 2002 debut, LET GO, arrived amidst a tidal wave of teen female performers, the 17-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter managed to distinguish herself with a punk-rock attitude tempered by a hooky pop sensibility. Lavigne's sound reached a remarkably wide audience, even inspiring indie-rock icon Liz Phair to openly pattern her next record after it.
With her 2004 follow-up, UNDER MY SKIN, Lavigne makes it clear which side of the pop-rock precipice she's standing on. Instead of pop producers such as the Matrix, Lavigne aligns herself with Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida and Linkin Park producer Don Gilmore. The result is a much more complex record--an angst-ridden, soul-searching album that rocks with fury without losing a keen ear for melody. This is clear from the outset with the brooding, lushly orchestrated, guitar-driven opening track "Take Me Away." However, while the music has significantly matured, Lavigne's lyrics still possess the same sense of teenage confusion and frustration so charming on her debut. UNDER MY SKIN is an impressive step for the young songwriter, and it effectively transcends the teen-pop label she inevitably received with her first record.
Asian re-issue of Under My Skin, features four bonus tracks on the audio CD, 'Nobody's Home' (Acoustic Live,) 'Take Me Away' (Live,) 'He Wasn't' (Live) and 'Tomorrow' (Acoustic Live) plus a bonus DVD (NTSC, All Code) which features - Under My Skin (22 min.), Bonez Tour Documentary (22 min.), Don't Tell Me (Music Video), My Happy Ending (Music Video) & Nobody's Home (Music Video). Under My Skin album
$16.05 If Brian Eno were Chinese and had come of age in the era of digital sampling rather than the era of analog tape manipulation, it's very likely that his music would have ended up sounding quite a bit like that of FM3, an avant ambient collective based in China that is expanded, for this recording, by guest drummer Dou Wei, guitarist Christiaan Virant, and electronica artist Yan Jun. The music they make on Hou Gan Yin is a gorgeous fusion of traditional Chinese sounds, abstract noise, faux-natural sound effects (synthesized insect chirps, dripping water, etc.), and floating wisps of harmonically minimalist piano and synthesizer chords. There are no songs as such, and hardly even any tracks, really -- most of the tracks on the program are simply numbered, though a handful of them are rather bewilderingly titled "Wu." Not that it matters: this isn't the type of album that will lead listeners to say "Hey, go back and play that third track again." It's the kind of album that will lead listeners to sit back deeply into ...

Under My Skin songs
$12.19 Mere months after the 2007 release of the moody COLD COLORS EP, Saturday Looks Good to Me unveiled its fourth full-length outing, FILL UP THE ROOM. Easily the indie-pop collective's most ambitious and expansive album, this 11-track set often recalls a more restrained Arcade Fire, particularly on the restless "When I Lose My Eyes," which vibrates with tense guitar-and-drum lines, and the dreamy "Make a Plan," a tune that calls attention to frontman Fred Thomas's laid-back, though slightly disarming, charisma and the ensemble's inventive arrangements. Although ROOM marks a departure from the group's longtime label, Polyvinyl, SLGTM seems to have embraced its new home--K Records--with verve, as evinced by the assured and adventurous nature of the record.
