THE ENCHANTED GARDEN, the John Renbourn Group's follow-up to A MAID IN BEDLAM, is a delight. Although Renbourn's typically exquisite six and 12-string guitars are at the forefront of the arrangements, it's ex-Pentangle singer Jacqui McShee's angelic voice that first arrests the listener. Although less well known than Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior, or June Tabor, McShee is every bit their equal.
The flute, woodwind, and reed coloring that Tony Roberts adds to these eight tracks enhances the proceedings without becoming overbearing. Subtle hand percussion and tabla also underpin many of the songs. A blend of early music and traditional British balladry, THE ENCHANTED GARDEN is endlessly fascinating, with a breathtaking guitar tour de force in the opening "Pavane Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie/Tourdion."

Enchanted Garden album
$11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Blues, Blues Christmas Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Enchanted Garden CD music
$16.39 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American Christmas-themed blues and gospel pieces (with a couple of street sermons thrown in) recorded between 1925 and 1955, ranging from down-and-out laments and jailhouse moans to surprising (and occasionally risqué) requests for what Santa can bring down the chimney. Highlights on the first disc include the opening track, the joyous "Christ Was Born on Christmas Morn," recorded in 1925 by comedian and female impersonator Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon; Harry Crafton's "Bring That Cadillac Back" (a Cadillac might not be the best gift if your girlfriend likes to ramble) from 1947; Tampa Red's amazing, ringing slide guitar tone on "Christmas and New Year's Blues" from 1936; and the bizarre, disturbing ...

| | Alexandra DVD (2007)
Enchanted Garden album
$21.49 Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov (THE SUN, RUSSIAN ARK, MOTHER AND SON) has produced another majestic achievement with ALEXANDRA. In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson in seven years and, understanding that her life is coming to an end, she decides to visit him at his army camp in war-torn Chechnya. What at first is a beautiful reunion gradually becomes conflicted, as Alexandra is forced ...
| | Dar Williams Green World CD (2000)
Enchanted Garden CD music
$15.65 It ain't easy being queen. In the late 1990s, Dar Williams emerged as the unchallenged ruler of the folk singer-songwriter roost, and her Cry, Cry, Cry side-project with Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky heightened her profile even further. This all added up to a great deal of expectation surrounding THE GREEN WORLD.
Williams did not shrink from the challenge. For one thing, THE GREEN WORLD is the least "folk"-sounding of all her recordings. The rhythm section of Joe Jackson bassman Graham Maby and former Wings drummer Steve Holley provides an expansive, rock-inflected attack for Williams' very personal, lyrically detailed songs. It's not just the band or the production, though; it sounds like Williams wrote many of these songs with a wider appeal in mind. A number of the tunes are catchier and more hook-based than much of her previous work. Don't read "sell-out" into any of this, however; Williams is too set in her quirky ways to pander to the mainstream. On THE GREEN ...

| | Terry Reid Super Lungs: The Complete Studio Recordings 1966-1969 CDs (2004)
Enchanted Garden songs
$15.59 Most of the contents of Super Lungs: The Complete Studio Recordings -- most especially the albums Bang, Bang You're Terry Reid and Terry Reid -- will be familiar to the singer's fans, and may dissuade people from picking up this double-CD set. That would be a shame, however, in view of the other material that is here -- starting with his work with Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers, which opens disc one and dates from well before his solo debut, Reid reveals himself as an extraordinarily (jaw-droppingly good, in fact) soul singer, with range, power, charisma, and taste, even on those early sides, and the package is extended into genuinely uncharted territory with a half-dozen newly discovered, newly mixed outtakes from Bang, Bang You're Terry Reid, and two tracks from Reid's first recording session in 1966, "Funny How Time Slips Away" (which is almost worth the price of the double-CD set by itself) and "I'll Take Good Care of You." The sound quality is spot-on perfect, state of the art, the annotation by Peter Doggett is entertaining and informative, and the whole package is some of the best British-spawned soul and R&B that one can find. ~ Bruce Eder
