Personnel: Albert Ayler (vocals, musette, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Albert Ayler; Mary Maria, Mary Maria Parks (vocals, soprano saxophone); Steve Tintweiss (double bass); Allen Blairman (drums). Recording information: Maeght Foundation, St. Paul De Vence (07/25/1970). Photographer: Raymond Ross. This Albert Ayler concert performance was previously unreleased when the revived ESP label put it out in 2005. Performed a few days before Ayler's final recordings, it features the avant-garde innovator romping with bassist Steve Tintweiss and drummer Allen Blairman in a quartet augmented by singer Mary Maria. Unfortunately, Maria's contributions lower the quality of the performances a bit for her singing on half the numbers and chanting on "Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe" is an acquired taste and slightly inhibits the other musicians, taking up valuable space. She also plays soprano on one number. Ayler himself is in excellent form throughout, best on the playful "Birth of Mirth" and his theme song, "Ghosts." Bassist Steve Tintweiss and drummer Allen Blairman work well with Ayler, making one regret that this group did not last longer and record a full set as a trio. ~ Scott YanowMagnet (p.118) - "He provides the raw, highly emotive sounds for which he's best known, as well as some restrained and conventionally lyrical parts..." The Wire (p.53) - "[I]t makes for a historically potent listen....There are some beautiful moments of tonal flux..." | Live On The Riviera Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) A Rare item from 1970 This set was recorded a couple of days before the Fondation Maeght of July 1970 recording. I have to say the latter is a better set; if you are thinking of purchasing just one of the two releases, I would go for the Fondation Maeght set.
My reason for saying this is that the latter has Ayler concentrating solely on his sax playing and that is very very good. On this set, Ayler sings as does Mary Maria - this lowers the value of the set. Ayler's singing is an acquired taste - I am afraid 30 plus years down the line I am still perplexed by it. Mary Maria's singing parts are also challenging on the ear, whilst her Soprano Sax playing is risible!
The problem is that 4 of the 7 tracks contain vocals. If you like the vocals this is OK - however, if you don't you will end up skipping half of the 56 minute running time.
I have to say I did enjoy Ayler's sax playing throughout.

A rare gem of one of the last Ayler's performance Simply beautiful ! A definitive masterpiece, which bring a new aspect of the musical approach of the saxophonist. Maybe more convincing, I'm not a big fan of Ayler's music, which is sometimes extremely "naive" and also deliberately "free" and out of purpose. And that's why I was delighted with this live performance. First, this is a rare occasion to hear live some tunes that haven't been heard anywhere before, secondly the voice of Mary Maria is simply marvellous. I'm not talking about her singer habilities, but simply of the sound of his voice, which is sensitive and sensual at the same time. And finally, Ayler"s solos are simply deeper and richer than most of his past performances, equalling probably John Coltrane's typical intensity. This is "free-jazz" of course, but if, like me, you love Coltrane and can't listen Albert Ayler, this live performance will maybe help you to reconsider once again this great sax player, and make you love him as well. $10.55 Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle, Billy May (arranger, conductor). Recorded between 1953 and 1960. Includes liner notes by Bruce Springsteen and Pete Hamill. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Bob Norberg (Capitol Mastering). Audio Remasterer: Bob Norberg. Recording information: 1953-196?. Photographer: Sid Avery. Arranger: Nelson Riddle. A good single-disc compilation of his Capitol years, covering 1953 to the beginning of the 1960s. His Capitol output was so extensive that it's impossible for a 20-song anthology to give a comprehensive overview even of the highlights. Also, as this focuses on the albums he made with Capitol, some of his biggest hits of the time are omitted, such as "Learnin' the Blues," "Hey! Jealous Lover," and "High Hopes." Still, a lot of the performances much of the public identifies with the singer ...
