| | Cafe Tacuba Un Viaje CD Cafe Tacuba Discography of CDs
The unique Mexican rock band Cafe Tacuba is not a household name in America, but on the evidence of the screams, cheers, and epic sing-alongs on the live double-disc UN VIAJE, the group holds superstar status in its native country, and rightly so. More fun than a carnival, Cafe Tacuba mixes traditional Mexican folk, ska, R&B, cabaret, punk, electronica, and everything in-between into a sonic blast as appealing as it is original. On paper, it doesn't seem as if this grab bag would hold up, but the band's experimental rock is amazingly cohesive and compelling.
In addition to the group's superior and eclectic musicianship (it is sometimes difficult to believe there are just four guys making all of this music), Cafe Tacuba crafts great songs, full of ingeniously catchy passages and infectious melodic hooks. UN VIAJE sprawls at 29 tracks, giving listeners plenty of the band's catalogue under one cover. Cafe Tacuba plays with great energy and precision, shifting with pinpoint accuracy from dreamy, expansive post-rock to nervous New Wave to furiously churning rock, all conveyed with a passion that matches the adulation of the crowd.
Café Tacuba: Sizu Yantra (vocals); Joselo Rangel (guitar); Emmanuel del Real (keyboards); Quique Rangel (bass guitar).

Un Viaje album
$6.75 Originally released on Motown Records. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
An 11-song snapshot of the Dazz Band's Motown stint that includes the not-often-featured "To the Roof," whose origins date back to "Take It to the Woof" by Cleveland, OH-based funk band Morning Maniac led by ex-Dazz Band member Kenny Pettus who's the lead voice on the Earth, Wind and Fire-ish "I Might As Well Forget About Loving You." But other than that, there are no surprises, just straight-ahead digitally remastered Dazz Band blasts that blow you away in CD format ("Let It Whip"'s bassline is hypnotizing). For lovers, "Invitation to Love" and "Knock, Knock" are bonafide heart stirrers and the only ...
| | Rob Thomas Something To Be CD (2005) DualDisc
Un Viaje CD music
$16.05 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock songwriters in the business. Not only did Thomas rack up a string of hits with the Florida group, but he also co-penned "Smooth" from Santana's Grammy-winning 1999 comeback album, SUPERNATURAL.
With SOMETHING TO BE, his solo debut, Thomas pulls out all the stylistic stops, revealing that Matchbox Twenty's alternative-rock format provided a somewhat limited forum for his considerable talents. "Lonely No More" mixes an insistent dance beat with an insanely catchy chorus that sounds straight out of the boy-band textbook. The title track is a sly lyrical dig at poseurs of all stripes, backed by an 1980s electro-funk groove, while the burbling synths and Eastern percussion of "All That I Am" recall the world fusion experiments of Peter Gabriel and David Byrne. An ambitious effort by a guy who knows his way around a hit single, SOMETHING TO BE is the sound of an artist breaking ...

| | Aventura God's Project CD (2005)
Un Viaje songs
$13.85 Since its formation in the Bronx, New York in 1994, Dominican boy band Aventura has been steadily expanding its sound toward a style that incorporates hip-hop, R&B, rock, merengue, and reggaeton, while still retaining strong traces of traditional bachata. GOD'S PROJECT is the culmination of Aventura's stylistic expansion, and is the group's most mature, diverse, and accomplished album.
The sounds of bachata--the quartet's foundation--are still prominent, especially on "Ciego de Amor," which features a cameo by Antony Santos, one of the Dominican Republic's leading bachata artists (not to be confused with Aventura's own Anthony "Romeo" Santos). The group also ventures deep into reggaeton territory on the likes of "Ella y Yo" (which stars reggaeton kingpin Don Omar). Various international ...
| | Marco Antonio Solis La Historia Continua: Parte II CD (2005) With DVD
Un Viaje album
$14.35 The companion volume to the first installation of LA HISTORIA CONTINUA, PARTE II helps confirm Marco Antonio Solis as one of the most important artists in Latin pop. Solis draws inspiration from Tejano and Norteno, yet his music is more polished than these traditional, folk-based Mexican forms. With his sumptuous tenor and smooth, passionate delivery, Solis is more a balladeer in the classic pop sense, singing dramatic love songs that swell and smolder, even as they lodge themselves in the listener's mind.
This is quintessentially ...
| | Luis Fonsi Paso A Paso CD (2005)
Un Viaje CD music
$11.49 Luis Fonsi's sixth album, PASO A PASO, finds the Puerto Rican/Floridian singer in a pop-rock vein. On this 2005 outing, Fonsi opts for a lush, sweepingly cinematic sound that's filled out, on many tracks, by the Miami Symphonic Strings. The melancholy opener, "Nada Es Para Siempre," features atmospheric, Sarah McLachlan-esque instrumentation that perfectly complements Fonsi's smooth Spanish vocals and the song's dramatic mood. Although there are upbeat moments on PASO ...
