How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.

WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative cover art. The tunes are mostly unknown originals or, in the case of Lieber & Stoller's "Love Potion #9," so transformed by the Tijuana "treatment" as to be almost unrecognizable. Special mention must go to guitarist John Pisano and marimba man Julius Wechter, both of whom round out the sharp corners of a potentially raucous sound.

Building upon South of the Border's (1964) Top Ten success, Herb Alpert dismissed the contingency of Los Angeles-based studio instrumental all-stars, which he had christened the Tijuana Brass. Because there was enough demand for live dates, just like a musical Gepetto, Alpert formed a real Tijuana Brass. The bandleader/trumpeter was joined by Tonni Kalash (trumpet), Robert Edmondson (trombone), Pat Senatore (bass), John Pisano (guitars), Lou Pagani (piano), and Nick Ceroli (drums). Ostensibly, the personnel wasn't a primary consideration as Alpert and company had already begun making serious inroads on the pop music scene. Not bad, considering the market was being heavily infiltrated, if not practically dominated by the British Invasion. With Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965), they would take that momentum to new heights -- including three Grammy Awards alone for the update of the Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow-penned theme to Shelagh Delaney's play of the same name, "A Taste of Honey." The remainder of the material on the dozen-song album was chosen with food as the underlying thematic motif. Sol Lake -- who provided Alpert "The Lonely Bull" and "Mexican Shuffle" returns, and this time he has custom-made the upbeat and, above all, catchy trio of "Green Peppers," "Bittersweet Samba," and "El Garbanzo." Allen Toussaint's title composition "Whipped Cream" garnered significant attention, but not as a chart hit. Rather, it could be heard as bachelorettes were being introduced on ABC-TV's The Dating Game. Early in the series run, additional Alpert offerings were also incorporated as incidental music: "Spanish Flea," as the bachelors were being announced, "Lollipops and Roses," when the lucky winners were being told where they would be spending their date, and both "Ladyfingers" and "Lemon Tree" were in rotation as contestants mulled over their answers.

After several poor analogue-to-CD transfers in the '80s and '90s, Whipped Cream & Other Delights was reissued as part of Shout! Factory's Herb Alpert Signature Series and boasts remarkably improved sound. [The CD was also released with two bonus tracks: "Rosemary" and "Blueberry Park," which are denoted as "unused studio session masters."] ~ Lindsay Planer

5 stars Who doesn't love Whipped Cream?
As a kid I heard this music many, many times. It is lively and full of fun. I'm just glad that you can get it on CD form now. The records are wearing out. If you liked Herb Albert once, you can get to know him all over again with this CD. Have fun.

Listened to this as a kid and loved it. The band is very tight and the music is quite varied. The sound quality if excellent- great job! I plan on picking up more now that I know what a great re-packaging job they did with this one.

By late 1966, it seemed as if every TV commercial and every pop arranger had latched onto the Herb Alpert "Ameriachi" sound -- at which point the resourceful originator of that sound began to pare it down and loosen ...

L.A.'s pop jazz scene launched this fine and fluid guitarist, who received lots of praise throughout the next decade for his breezy yet aggressive playing style and lots of New Adult Contemporary airplay around the country for his wonderful way with a melody. Smith's follow up to Puma Creek is melodic and playful throughout and his very accessible grooves helped him keep up with like minded guitarists of the early smooth jazz era like Pat Kelley and Thom Rotella. There's a lot to admire here--the spunky urban rhythms of "South Central," the lush sweetness of "Zephyr Cove" and the funky improvs over the simple rhythms of "Take me, I'm Yo's." The most striking tunes, however, are the sassy title cut (featuring some stellar bass soloing by Brian Bromberg) and the tropical, Oriental sounding "Eastern ...
