Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import. Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting. All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. Part of David Lewiston's uber-extensive Explorer series on Nonesuch in the '70s, this album is a re-release on CD of the original installation for Mexico. The music featured herein hails from two locations, both in southern Mexico. The music from Oaxaca is generally a bit more diverse, but both musics draw heavily upon multiple factors: Spanish-introduced instrumentation, Mayan performance styles, imported African instrumentation, a multitude of languages, etc. As it stands on this album, the marimba figures heavily in the scene, with the Mexicans making use of their own innovation in marimbas: making them large enough to allow three or four players simultaneous access. The harp is also featured prominently. Much of the music was recorded during the festival of Guadalupe, as well as some from around Christmas (not that long afterwards). The nice thing about Lewiston's recordings is that he generally attempted to capture as many forms of music as possible to include all on the compilation. Here, the listener gets secular entertainment music, ritual music, and a couple forms in between those two. For a nice, if outdated, look into Mexican music (and more specifically, Mexican tribal music/Mexican rural music), take a look into this album. ~ Adam Greenberg Mexico's southern provinces were still extremely rural in 1976, when this set was first released -- and remain so today. And in rural societies tradition tends to linger. This fiesta music has a rugged beauty about it, and a celebratory fervor that starts on "Son Sventa N'Ahaul San Lorenzo," where the fireworks exploding over the village can clearly be heard. Explorer Series: Mexico, by its very nature, can offer little more than a sampling of different festivals and traditions. Marimba conjuntos (or groups) occur often, and with rich beauty, while the violin/guitar/harp combination on "Bats'i Son Martomail" is thrilling. The fife and drum (in this case flute and drum), so typical of Europe and North America in late medieval times, come to the fore on "Son Sventa Cajvaltic," a reminder of the battles fought in the area between the Indians and conquistadors -- the result of which is the mestizo population so typical of Mexico. There are also brass bands, which occur all over the country, and, perhaps the biggest surprise, a couple of solo singers, accompanying themselves on guitar, very intimate for such fiestas. Gerald Levert was born to sing smooth, seductive R&B. Surrounded by a rich musical family, Gerald was influenced by his father Eddie, a member of the hit-making O'Jays, and formed the vocal group Levert with his brother Sean. In 1987, Levert scored the crossover smash "Casanova," along with a number of subsequent R&B hits. Embarking on a solo career at the beginning of the '90s, Gerald has been pumping out steady, sensual soul since then, and 2003's A STROKE OF GENIUS is just another satisfying step.
