(5 Customer Reviews)
Guitarist John Norum's OPTIMUS contains the tracks "Chase Down the Moon," "Time to Run," and "Forced," among others. Norum's guitar antics are on ample display throughout.
The guitarist of Europe is at it again with a new rage. This follow up to the band's "Start From The Dark" has increased exposure to Norum's massive guitar playing and solo career.
Personnel: John Norum (vocals, guitar); Mats Lindfors (keyboards).
Audio Mixers: Mats Lindfors; John Norum.

| Optimus Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Killer CD The guitar work on this CD flat out smokes! John Norum tears it up...no tricks, no whammy bars, just lightning from a Les Paul! His vocals are pretty good, as well. Standout tracks include Time To Run and Takin' The Blame. Killer riffs with the best vocal work on the CD. The final tune, Solitude, is one of two instrumentals on the disc. The lead work on this cut starts out slower and more melodic, but by the end of the tune, John is just tearing it up!! A "must have" for any fan of rock guitar! Much more heavy than any work he has done with Europe. Pick it up!! Submitted by GORDONW (SNELLVILLE, GA., U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another winner! John does it again with a great guitar driven masterpiece. The songs are great and his guitar playing is fantastic. He really does a good job of making a good heavy rock CD with a slight touch of a modern sound without selling out. I wish he just put out more material. I would kill for a John Norum Live DVD!! Could be longer Some pretty good riffs but the tuned down guitar is not the John Norum from the past. Good vocals, I enjoyed them. Would like to see a few more songs on the next cd. Worth a try for Norum/Europe fans. Submitted by falcon_rocks (Farmington, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Optimus
$15.05 Clichés have a way of being overused, but some of them are so darn accurate that it's hard not to come back to them again and again. One such cliché is, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." That cliché applies to politics and economics, and it most certainly applies to music; James LaBrie's third solo project, Elements of Persuasion, is a perfect example. This 2005 release worships, cherishes and adores rock's past without being totally enslaved by it, and like a lot of the neo-soulsters who have managed to link the '60s and '70s with the '90s and 2000s (Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, among others), LaBrie has no problem drawing on different eras for inspiration. But the Dream Theater vocalist has nothing to do with R&B; his turf is hard rock, metal and progressive rock, and Elements of Persuasion is an album with both pre-Nevermind and post-Nevermind components. There is no getting around the abundance of '70s and '80s influences that assert themselves on this disc -- influences ranging from Ronnie James Dio, Judas Priest and Queensrÿche ...

$12.39 They're baaack! Nearly a decade-and-a-half has passed since we last heard from one of hair metal's leading bands, Europe, and the group has returned with Start from the Dark. While the group has earned a bit of a bad rap over the years (their keyboard-heavy tale of Armageddon, ...
| | Michael Schenker Heavy Hitters CD (2005)
Optimus
$13.49 There have been countless cover albums over the years, where established rock artists redo favorites from their formative years (David Bowie's PIN UPS, Rush's FEEDBACK, etc.), and the 2005 Michael Schenker release HEAVY HITTERS treads upon similar terrain. Put together by renowned studio musician Bob Kulick (best known to Kiss fans as the brother of Bruce Kulick, and as a guest guitarist on numerous Kiss albums), HEAVY HITTERS puts Schenker together with quite a few notable names from both the heavy metal and classic rock genres. Featured are covers of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" (featuring Tim "Ripper" Owens on vocals), Pink Floyd's "Money" (with Tommy Shaw), Mountain's "Blood of the ...

$16.49 The complete output of three major territory bands and one minor one is included on this perfectly-conceived CD. Alex Jackson's Plantation Orchestra was quite primitive, but its four titles include a classic rendition of "Jackass Blues." Alphonso Trent's Orchestra (which recorded a dozen numbers during 1928-33) featured such players as trumpeters Irving "Mouse" Randolph and Peanuts Holland, trombonist Snub Mosley, and violinist Stuff Smith. Highlights include "Nightmare," "After You've Gone," "St. James Infirmary," ...
| | Agent Orange This Is The Voice CD (1986)
Optimus
$10.15 The long-delayed second Agent Orange album isn't quite Living in Darkness part two, though it's little different from that album in many ways -- same nuclear-strength attack that's equal parts surf and punk intensity, catchy and threatening all at once. That said, it's a strong album on its own, with the small changes in the basic sound meaning a lot in context. For one thing, Palm stretches his singing voice more here than before, adding more of the reverb that helped flesh out earlier songs like "Somebody to Love." The results are delights like the opening two numbers, the creepily paranoid "Voices (In the Night)," and the equally psychotic poppy rave-up "It's In Your Head." His strong semi-spoken declamations still rule the roost in general, but tweaking the basic style just a bit pays off here as a result. Musically, the band nails things as always and then ups the ante just that little bit ...
