Precious: Essential Collection
$13.49 Personnel: Yechiel Hasson (guitar); Avshalom Caspi (piano); Alvaro Garrido (percussion). Arrangers: Yechiel Hasson; Alvaro Garrido; Yasmin Levy. Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside ...

| | Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music: Vols. 1 & 2 CD (1987)
Precious: Essential Collection
$13.39 Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations. Personnel: Harry Balfa, Rodney Balfa (vocals, guitar); Dewey Balfa, Will Balfa (vocals, fiddle); Burkeman Balfa (vocals, triangle); Marc Savoy (fiddle, accordion); Hadley Fontenot (accordion); Tony Balfa (drums, triangle). Translators: Barry Jean Ancelet; Floyd Soileau; Owen Demoruelle; Ron Stanford. The Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music, Vols. 1-2 combines both of the group's original Play Traditional Cajun Music albums onto one disc. The first volume was released on Swallow Records in 1965 and helped kick-start the Cajun revival of the '60s. It's an excellent album, featuring wonderful harmonies from Rodney, Will, and Dewey, as well as stellar instrumental work. The second volume, recorded and released in 1974, isn't quite as strong as its predecessor, but it is still very good and is filled with terrific music. Both albums represent the Balfa Brothers at their peak. They may have a number of very good albums in their catalog, but The Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music, Vols. 1-2 effectively explains what they are all about. ~ Thom Owens If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) ...
| | Bob Marley Live!: Live At The Lyceum CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Precious: Essential Collection
$11.79 Additional Tracks
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Al Anderson (guitar); Tyrone Downie (keyboards); Aston "Familyman" Barrett (bass); Crlton "Carly" Barrett (drums); Alvin "Seeco" Patterson (percussion). Additional personnel includes: Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths (background vocals). Reissue producer: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Recorded at The Lyceum, London, England on July 19, 1975. Originally released on Island (90032). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Al Yasha Anderson (guitar); Tyrone Downie (keyboards); Carlton "Carlie" Barrett (drums). Audio Mixer: David Harper. Recording information: Lyceum, London, England (07/19/1975). Photographers: Adrian Boot; Bob Ellis; Dennis Morris. Captured live in 1977 while on tour for the Exodus album, Live! At the Rainbow captures the Wailers, sans Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, at an ambitious stage of their career. Offering a more driven and tense show than the 1979 Santa Barbara concert that was released on DVD as Legend Live, Rainbow is as exhausting as it is rousing. Hits like "I Shot the Sheriff," "Jamming," and "Get Up, Stand Up" are more urgent than they would become in their later, more languid performances, and the difference is worth experiencing. Not that Bob Marley & the Wailers were ever complacent or lazy, but the rebellious fire that the English punks ...

Precious: Essential Collection
$14.49 All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Chris Strachwitz. Recording information: San Antonio, TX (1935-1950). Although El Ciego Melquiades did play on some numbers with vocals, all 20 of the tracks on this compilation are instrumental, all but two of them recorded from 1935 to 1938 (the final two songs were done in the late '40s). Like many such recordings of the era, though aimed at a secular audience, these now have primarily folkloric value, documenting a once popular folk style that's no longer too popular. El Ciego Melquiades is accompanied by ...
| | Rough Guide To The Music Of Turkey CD (2003) (Import) United Kingdom
Precious: Essential Collection
$15.59 Performers include: Sezen Aksu, Sibel Can, Umit Sayin, Levent Yuksel, Ajda Pekkan, Grup Yorum, Laco Tayfa, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Belkis Akkale, Barbaros Erkose Ensemble, Kemani Cemal Cinarli, Kudsi Erguner Ensemble, Ebru Gundes. Liner Note Author: David Rosenberg. Photographer: Hüseyin Irmak. There's been very little exploration of Turkish music in the West, and on the basis of this you have to hope there'll be a lot more in the future. This disc covers the waterfront, from the pop sounds of Sezen Aksu and Ebru Gündes to the tortuous (yet playful) time signatures of Laco Tayfa & Hüsnü Senlendirici and the brooding sound of the Barbaros Erköse Ensemble, with Erköse, one of the country's leading musicians and a stunning clarinetist, at the helm. It's a carefully sequenced disc, moving slowly from straightforward Turkish pop -- which is no copy of Western sounds -- through gypsy music to Sufi sounds. The pivotal point ...
